Sparse Bases and Bayesian Inference of Electromagnetic Scattering

Many approaches in CEM rely on the decomposition of complex radiation and scattering behavior with a set of basis vectors. Accurate estimation of the quantities of interest can be synthesized through a weighted sum of these vectors. In addition to basis decompositions, sparse signal processing techniques developed in the CS community can be leveraged when only a small subset of the basis vectors are required to sufficiently represent the quantity of interest. We investigate several concepts in which novel bases are applied to common electromagnetic problems and leverage the sparsity property to improve performance and/or reduce computational burden. The first concept explores the use of multiple types of scattering primitives to reconstruct scattering patterns of electrically large targets. Using a combination of isotropic point scatterers and wedge diffraction primitives as our bases, a 40% reduction in reconstruction error can be achieved. Next, a sparse basis is used to improve DOA estimation. We implement the BSBL technique to determine the angle of arrival of multiple incident signals with only a single snapshot of data from an arbitrary arrangement of non-isotropic antennas. This is an improvement over the current state-of-the-art, where restrictions on the antenna type, configuration, and a priori knowledge of the number of signals are often assumed. Lastly, we investigate the feasibility of a basis set to reconstruct the scattering patterns of electrically small targets. The basis is derived from the TCM and can capture non-localized scattering behavior. Preliminary results indicate that this basis may be used in an interpolation and extrapolation scheme to generate scattering patterns over multiple frequencies

DNN-DANM: A High-Accuracy Two-Dimensional DOA Estimation Method Using Practical RIS

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) or intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been an attractive technology for future wireless communication and sensing systems. However, in the practical RIS, the mutual coupling effect among RIS elements, the reflection phase shift, and amplitude errors will degrade the RIS performance significantly. This paper investigates the two-dimensional direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation problem in the scenario using a practical RIS. After formulating the system model with the mutual coupling effect and the reflection phase/amplitude errors of the RIS, a novel DNNDANM method is proposed for the DOA estimation by combining the deep neural network (DNN) and the decoupling atomic norm minimization (DANM). The DNN step reconstructs the received signal from the one with RIS impairments, and the DANM step exploits the signal sparsity in the two-dimensional spatial domain. Additionally, a semi-definite programming (SDP) method with low computational complexity is proposed to solve the atomic minimization problem. Finally, both simulation and prototype are carried out to show estimation performance, and the proposed method outperforms the existing methods in the two-dimensional DOA estimation with low complexity in the scenario with practical RIS.Comment: 11 pages, 12 figure

Sparse Automotive MIMO Radar for Super-Resolution Single Snapshot DOA Estimation With Mutual Coupling

A novel sparse automotive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar configuration is proposed for low-complexity super-resolution single snapshot direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation. The physical antenna effects are incorporated in the signal model via open-circuited embedded-element patterns (EEPs) and coupling matrices. The transmit (TX) and receive (RX) array are each divided into two uniform sparse sub-arrays with different inter-element spacings to generate two MIMO sets. Since the corresponding virtual arrays (VAs) of both MIMO sets are uniform, the well-known spatial smoothing (SS) algorithm is applied to suppress the temporal correlation among sources. Afterwards, the co-prime array principle between two spatially smoothed VAs is deployed to avoid DOA ambiguities. A performance comparison between the sparse and conventional MIMO radars with the same number of TX and RX channels confirms a spatial resolution enhancement. Meanwhile, the DOA estimation error due to the mutual coupling (MC) is less pronounced in the proposed sparse architecture since antennas in both TX and RX arrays are spaced larger than half wavelength apart

In this paper, a novel fast sparse DOA estimation algorithm, named the joint smoothed l0-norm algorithm, is proposed for multiple measurement vectors in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar. To eliminate the white or colored Gaussian noises, the new method first obtains a low-complexity high-order cumulants based data matrix. Then, the proposed algorithm designs a joint smoothed function tailored for the MMV case, based on which joint smoothed l0-norm sparse representation framework is constructed. Finally, for the MMV-based joint smoothed function, the corresponding gradient-based sparse signal reconstruction is designed, thus the DOA estimation can be achieved. The proposed method is a fast sparse representation algorithm, which can solve the MMV problem and perform well for both white and colored Gaussian noises. The proposed joint algorithm is about two orders of magnitude faster than the l1-norm minimization based methods, such as l1-SVD (singular value decomposition), RV (real-valued) l1-SVD and RV l1-SRACV (sparse representation array covariance vectors), and achieves better DOA estimation performance
