Sealed operation, and circulation and purification of gas in the HARPO TPC
HARPO is a time projection chamber (TPC) demonstrator of a gamma-ray
telescope and polarimeter in the MeV-GeV range, for a future space mission. We
present the evolution of the TPC performance over a five month sealed-mode
operation, by the analysis of cosmic-ray data, followed by the fast and
complete recovery of the initial gas properties using a lightweight gas
circulation and purification system.Comment: Proceedings_MPGD2015, EPJ Web of Conference
Results of REXUS12's Suaineadh Experiment : Deployment of a spinning space web in micro gravity conditions
On the 19th of March 2012, the Suaineadh experiment was launched onboard the sounding rocket REXUS12 (Rocket Experiments for University Students) from the Swedish launch base ESRANGE in Kiruna. The Suaineadh experiment served as a technology demonstrator for a space web deployed by a spinning assembly. The deployment of this web is a stepping stone for the development of ever larger structures in space. Such a structure could serve as a substructure for solar arrays, transmitters and/or antennas. The team was comprised of students from the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow, UK), the University of Glasgow (Glasgow, UK) and the Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm, Sweden), designing, manufacturing and testing the experiment over the past 24 months. Following launch, the experiment was ejected from the ejection barrel located within the nosecone of the rocket. Centrifugal forces acting upon the space webs spinning assembly were used to stabilise the experiment’s platform. A specifically designed spinning reaction wheel, with an active control method, was used. Once the experiment’s motion was controlled, a 2 m by 2 m space web is released. Four daughter sections situated in the corners of the square web served as masses to stabilise the web due to the centrifugal forces acting on them. The four daughter sections contained inertial measurement units (IMUs). Each IMU provided acceleration and velocity measurements in all three directions. Through this, the positions of the four corners could be found through integration with respect to known time of the accelerations and rotations. Furthermore, four cameras mounted on the central hub section captured high resolution imagery of the deployment process. After the launch of REXUS12, the recovery helicopter was unable to locate the ejected experiment, but 22 pictures were received over the wireless connection between the experiment and the rocket. The last received picture was taken at the commencement of web deployment. Inspection of these pictures allowed the assumption that the experiment was fully functional after ejection, but perhaps through tumbling of either the experiment or the rocket, the wireless connection was interrupted. A recovery mission in the middle of August was only able to find the REXUS12 motor and the payload impact location
The WFIRST Galaxy Survey Exposure Time Calculator
This document describes the exposure time calculator for the Wide-Field
Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) high-latitude survey. The calculator works
in both imaging and spectroscopic modes. In addition to the standard ETC
functions (e.g. background and S/N determination), the calculator integrates
over the galaxy population and forecasts the density and redshift distribution
of galaxy shapes usable for weak lensing (in imaging mode) and the detected
emission lines (in spectroscopic mode). The source code is made available for
public use.Comment: 44 pages. The current C source code and version history can be found

Escrow: A large-scale web vulnerability assessment tool
The reliance on Web applications has increased rapidly over the years. At the same time, the quantity and impact of application security vulnerabilities have grown as well. Amongst these vulnerabilities, SQL Injection has been classified as the most common, dangerous and prevalent web application flaw. In this paper, we propose Escrow, a large-scale SQL Injection detection tool with an exploitation module that is light-weight, fast and platform-independent. Escrow uses a custom search implementation together with a static code analysis module to find potential target web applications. Additionally, it provides a simple to use graphical user interface (GUI) to navigate through a vulnerable remote database. Escrow is implementation-agnostic, i.e. It can perform analysis on any web application regardless of the server-side implementation (PHP, ASP, etc.). Using our tool, we discovered that it is indeed possible to identify and exploit at least 100 databases per 100 minutes, without prior knowledge of their underlying implementation. We observed that for each query sent, we can scan and detect dozens of vulnerable web applications in a short space of time, while providing a means for exploitation. Finally, we provide recommendations for developers to defend against SQL injection and emphasise the need for proactive assessment and defensive coding practices
The Archives Unleashed Project: Technology, Process, and Community to Improve Scholarly Access to Web Archives
The Archives Unleashed project aims to improve scholarly access to web archives through a multi-pronged strategy involving tool creation, process modeling, and community building -- all proceeding concurrently in mutually --reinforcing efforts. As we near the end of our initially-conceived three-year project, we report on our progress and share lessons learned along the way. The main contribution articulated in this paper is a process model that decomposes scholarly inquiries into four main activities: filter, extract, aggregate, and visualize. Based on the insight that these activities can be disaggregated across time, space, and tools, it is possible to generate "derivative products", using our Archives Unleashed Toolkit, that serve as useful starting points for scholarly inquiry. Scholars can download these products from the Archives Unleashed Cloud and manipulate them just like any other dataset, thus providing access to web archives without requiring any specialized knowledge. Over the past few years, our platform has processed over a thousand different collections from over two hundred users, totaling around 300 terabytes of web archives. This research was supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, as well as Start Smart Labs, Compute Canada, the University of Waterloo, and York University. Assessment of socio-economic configuration of value chains : a proposed analysis framework to facilitate integration of small rural producers with global agribusiness
Value chain analysis is an important tool to assess and enhance the performance of agribusiness. This paper analyzes the empirical application of a conceptual framework known as the Rural Web to evaluate the socio-economic complexity of a specific agribusiness value chain. This can be used as a complementary approach to traditional value chain analysis. The proposed framework goes beyond linear descriptions of product flows and examines how supply chains are built, shaped and reproduced over time and space, while considering social, cultural, environmental and political aspects. The results demonstrate that the proposed framework is a suitable method for value chain analysis, principally for those whose early stages are based on small and medium-sized rural actors. The Rural Web analysis offers decision-makers a platform to identify key actors not traditionally considered in value chain analysis, as well as the social interrelationships that occur at different dimensions. It also enables the identification of corrective and preventive measures to enhance agribusiness value chains
An Efficient Bandit Algorithm for Realtime Multivariate Optimization
Optimization is commonly employed to determine the content of web pages, such
as to maximize conversions on landing pages or click-through rates on search
engine result pages. Often the layout of these pages can be decoupled into
several separate decisions. For example, the composition of a landing page may
involve deciding which image to show, which wording to use, what color
background to display, etc. Such optimization is a combinatorial problem over
an exponentially large decision space. Randomized experiments do not scale well
to this setting, and therefore, in practice, one is typically limited to
optimizing a single aspect of a web page at a time. This represents a missed
opportunity in both the speed of experimentation and the exploitation of
possible interactions between layout decisions.
Here we focus on multivariate optimization of interactive web pages. We
formulate an approach where the possible interactions between different
components of the page are modeled explicitly. We apply bandit methodology to
explore the layout space efficiently and use hill-climbing to select optimal
content in realtime. Our algorithm also extends to contextualization and
personalization of layout selection. Simulation results show the suitability of
our approach to large decision spaces with strong interactions between content.
We further apply our algorithm to optimize a message that promotes adoption of
an Amazon service. After only a single week of online optimization, we saw a
21% conversion increase compared to the median layout. Our technique is
currently being deployed to optimize content across several locations at
Amazon.com.Comment: KDD'17 Audience Appreciation Awar
