    Proceedings of the second "international Traveling Workshop on Interactions between Sparse models and Technology" (iTWIST'14)

    The implicit objective of the biennial "international - Traveling Workshop on Interactions between Sparse models and Technology" (iTWIST) is to foster collaboration between international scientific teams by disseminating ideas through both specific oral/poster presentations and free discussions. For its second edition, the iTWIST workshop took place in the medieval and picturesque town of Namur in Belgium, from Wednesday August 27th till Friday August 29th, 2014. The workshop was conveniently located in "The Arsenal" building within walking distance of both hotels and town center. iTWIST'14 has gathered about 70 international participants and has featured 9 invited talks, 10 oral presentations, and 14 posters on the following themes, all related to the theory, application and generalization of the "sparsity paradigm": Sparsity-driven data sensing and processing; Union of low dimensional subspaces; Beyond linear and convex inverse problem; Matrix/manifold/graph sensing/processing; Blind inverse problems and dictionary learning; Sparsity and computational neuroscience; Information theory, geometry and randomness; Complexity/accuracy tradeoffs in numerical methods; Sparsity?     Sparse Active Rectangular Array with Few Closely Spaced Elements

    Sparse sensor arrays offer a cost effective alternative to uniform arrays. By utilizing the co-array, a sparse array can match the performance of a filled array, despite having significantly fewer sensors. However, even sparse arrays can have many closely spaced elements, which may deteriorate the array performance in the presence of mutual coupling. This paper proposes a novel sparse planar array configuration with few unit inter-element spacings. This Concentric Rectangular Array (CRA) is designed for active sensing tasks, such as microwave or ultra-sound imaging, in which the same elements are used for both transmission and reception. The properties of the CRA are compared to two well-known sparse geometries: the Boundary Array and the Minimum-Redundancy Array (MRA). Numerical searches reveal that the CRA is the MRA with the fewest unit element displacements for certain array dimensions.Comment: 4+1 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl

    Sparse Modeling of Grouped Line Spectra

    This licentiate thesis focuses on clustered parametric models for estimation of line spectra, when the spectral content of a signal source is assumed to exhibit some form of grouping. Different from previous parametric approaches, which generally require explicit knowledge of the model orders, this thesis exploits sparse modeling, where the orders are implicitly chosen. For line spectra, the non-linear parametric model is approximated by a linear system, containing an overcomplete basis of candidate frequencies, called a dictionary, and a large set of linear response variables that selects and weights the components in the dictionary. Frequency estimates are obtained by solving a convex optimization program, where the sum of squared residuals is minimized. To discourage overfitting and to infer certain structure in the solution, different convex penalty functions are introduced into the optimization. The cost trade-off between fit and penalty is set by some user parameters, as to approximate the true number of spectral lines in the signal, which implies that the response variable will be sparse, i.e., have few non-zero elements. Thus, instead of explicit model orders, the orders are implicitly set by this trade-off. For grouped variables, the dictionary is customized, and appropriate convex penalties selected, so that the solution becomes group sparse, i.e., has few groups with non-zero variables. In an array of sensors, the specific time-delays and attenuations will depend on the source and sensor positions. By modeling this, one may estimate the location of a source. In this thesis, a novel joint location and grouped frequency estimator is proposed, which exploits sparse modeling for both spectral and spatial estimates, showing robustness against sources with overlapping frequency content. For audio signals, this thesis uses two different features for clustering. Pitch is a perceptual property of sound that may be described by the harmonic model, i.e., by a group of spectral lines at integer multiples of a fundamental frequency, which we estimate by exploiting a novel adaptive total variation penalty. The other feature, chroma, is a concept in musical theory, collecting pitches at powers of 2 from each other into groups. Using a chroma dictionary, together with appropriate group sparse penalties, we propose an automatic transcription of the chroma content of a signal

    Solutions to linear problems in aberrated optical systems

    Linear problems are possibly the kindest problems in physics and mathematics. Given sufficient information, the linear equations describing such problems are intrinsically solvable. The solution can be written as a vector having undergone a linear transformation in a vector space; extracting the solution is simply a matter of inverting the transformation. In an ideal optical system, the problem of extracting the object under investigation would be well defined, and the solution trivial to implement. However, real optical systems are all aberrated in some way, and these aberrations obfuscate the information, scrambling it and rendering it inextricable. The process of detangling the object from the aberrated system is no longer a trivial problem or even a uniquely solvable one, and represents one of the great challenges in optics today. This thesis provides a review of the theory behind optical microscopy in the presence of absent information, an architecture for the modern physical and computational methods used to solve the linear inversion problem, and three distinct application spaces of relevance.
