    Recent Progress in Optical Fiber Research

    This book presents a comprehensive account of the recent progress in optical fiber research. It consists of four sections with 20 chapters covering the topics of nonlinear and polarisation effects in optical fibers, photonic crystal fibers and new applications for optical fibers. Section 1 reviews nonlinear effects in optical fibers in terms of theoretical analysis, experiments and applications. Section 2 presents polarization mode dispersion, chromatic dispersion and polarization dependent losses in optical fibers, fiber birefringence effects and spun fibers. Section 3 and 4 cover the topics of photonic crystal fibers and a new trend of optical fiber applications.     Modelling, Simulation and Data Analysis in Acoustical Problems

    Modelling and simulation in acoustics is currently gaining importance. In fact, with the development and improvement of innovative computational techniques and with the growing need for predictive models, an impressive boost has been observed in several research and application areas, such as noise control, indoor acoustics, and industrial applications. This led us to the proposal of a special issue about “Modelling, Simulation and Data Analysis in Acoustical Problems”, as we believe in the importance of these topics in modern acoustics’ studies. In total, 81 papers were submitted and 33 of them were published, with an acceptance rate of 37.5%. According to the number of papers submitted, it can be affirmed that this is a trending topic in the scientific and academic community and this special issue will try to provide a future reference for the research that will be developed in coming years

    Binaural sound source localization using machine learning with spiking neural networks features extraction

    Human and animal binaural hearing systems are able take advantage of a variety of cues to localise sound-sources in a 3D space using only two sensors. This work presents a bionic system that utilises aspects of binaural hearing in an automated source localisation task. A head and torso emulator (KEMAR) are used to acquire binaural signals and a spiking neural network is used to compare signals from the two sensors. The firing rates of coincidence-neurons in the spiking neural network model provide information as to the location of a sound source. Previous methods have used a winner-takesall approach, where the location of the coincidence-neuron with the maximum firing rate is used to indicate the likely azimuth and elevation. This was shown to be accurate for single sources, but when multiple sources are present the accuracy significantly reduces. To improve the robustness of the methodology, an alternative approach is developed where the spiking neural network is used as a feature pre-processor. The firing rates of all coincidence-neurons are then used as inputs to a Machine Learning model which is trained to predict source location for both single and multiple sources. A novel approach that applied spiking neural networks as a binaural feature extraction method was presented. These features were processed using deep neural networks to localise multisource sound signals that were emitted from different locations. Results show that the proposed bionic binaural emulator can accurately localise sources including multiple and complex sources to 99% correctly predicted angles from single-source localization model and 91% from multi-source localization model. The impact of background noise on localisation performance has also been investigated and shows significant degradation of performance. The multisource localization model was trained with multi-condition background noise at SNRs of 10dB, 0dB, and -10dB and tested at controlled SNRs. The findings demonstrate an enhancement in the model performance in compared with noise free training data

    Shortest Route at Dynamic Location with Node Combination-Dijkstra Algorithm

    Abstract— Online transportation has become a basic requirement of the general public in support of all activities to go to work, school or vacation to the sights. Public transportation services compete to provide the best service so that consumers feel comfortable using the services offered, so that all activities are noticed, one of them is the search for the shortest route in picking the buyer or delivering to the destination. Node Combination method can minimize memory usage and this methode is more optimal when compared to A* and Ant Colony in the shortest route search like Dijkstra algorithm, but can’t store the history node that has been passed. Therefore, using node combination algorithm is very good in searching the shortest distance is not the shortest route. This paper is structured to modify the node combination algorithm to solve the problem of finding the shortest route at the dynamic location obtained from the transport fleet by displaying the nodes that have the shortest distance and will be implemented in the geographic information system in the form of map to facilitate the use of the system.     1st International Conference on Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, Kruger Park, 8-10 April 2002.This lecture is a principle-based review of a growing body of fundamental work stimulated by multiple opportunities to optimize geometric form (shape, structure, configuration, rhythm, topology, architecture, geography) in systems for heat and fluid flow. Currents flow against resistances, and by generating entropy (irreversibility) they force the system global performance to levels lower than the theoretical limit. The system design is destined to remain imperfect because of constraints (finite sizes, costs, times). Improvements can be achieved by properly balancing the resistances, i.e., by spreading the imperfections through the system. Optimal spreading means to endow the system with geometric form. The system construction springs out of the constrained maximization of global performance. This 'constructal' design principle is reviewed by highlighting applications from heat transfer engineering. Several examples illustrate the optimized internal structure of convection cooled packages of electronics. The origin of optimal geometric features lies in the global effort to use every volume element to the maximum, i.e., to pack the element not only with the most heat generating components, but also with the most flow, in such a way that every fluid packet is effectively engaged in cooling. In flows that connect a point to a volume or an area, the resulting structure is a tree with high conductivity branches and low-conductivity interstices.tm201

    As in all fields of work, an unmanageable number of abbreviations are used today in aviation for terms, definitions, commands, standards and technical descriptions. This applies in general to the areas of aeronautical communication, navigation and surveillance, cockpit and air traffic control working positions, passenger and cargo transport, and all other areas of flight planning, organization and guidance. In addition, many abbreviations are used more than once or have different meanings in different languages. In order to obtain an overview of the most common abbreviations used in air traffic management, organizations like EUROCONTROL, FAA, DWD and DLR have published lists of abbreviations in the past, which have also been enclosed in this document. In addition, abbreviations from some larger international projects related to aviation have been included to provide users with a directory as complete as possible. This means that the second edition of the Air Traffic Management Abbreviation Compendium includes now around 16,500 abbreviations and acronyms from the field of aviation
