Robust Stability Analysis of Nonlinear Hybrid Systems

    Get PDF
We present a methodology for robust stability analysis of nonlinear hybrid systems, through the algorithmic construction of polynomial and piecewise polynomial Lyapunov-like functions using convex optimization and in particular the sum of squares decomposition of multivariate polynomials. Several improvements compared to previous approaches are discussed, such as treating in a unified way polynomial switching surfaces and robust stability analysis for nonlinear hybrid systems

The majorfocus in this study is on the handling of model uncertainties andunknown inputs. In fact, the vehicle lateral model is affectedby several parameter variations such as longitudinal velocity, cornering stiffnesses coefficients and unknown inputs like windgust disturbances. Cornering stiffness parameters variation isconsidered to be unknown but bounded with known compactset. Their effect is addressed by generating intervals for theresiduals based on the zonotope representation of all possiblevalues. The developed fault detection procedure has been testedusing real driving data acquired from a prototype vehicle.Index Terms— Robust fault detection, interval models, zonotopes, set-membership, switched uncertain systems, LMIs,input-to-state stability, arbitrary switching.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Issues in the design of switched linear systems : a benchmark study

    Get PDF
In this paper we present a tutorial overview of some of the issues that arise in the design of switched linear control systems. Particular emphasis is given to issues relating to stability and control system realisation. A benchmark regulation problem is then presented. This problem is most naturally solved by means of a switched control design. The challenge to the community is to design a control system that meets the required performance specifications and permits the application of rigorous analysis techniques. A simple design solution is presented and the limitations of currently available analysis techniques are illustrated with reference to this example

The optical calcium frequency standards of PTB and NIST

    Get PDF
We describe the current status of the Ca optical frequency standards with laser-cooled neutral atoms realized in two different laboratories for the purpose of developing a possible future optical atomic clock. Frequency measurements performed at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) make the frequency of the clock transition of 40Ca one of the best known optical frequencies (relative uncertainty 1.2e-14) and the measurements of this frequency in both laboratories agree to well within their respective uncertainties. Prospects for improvement by orders of magnitude in the relative uncertainty of the standard look feasible.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, to appear in Comptes Rendus Physiqu

A virtual actuator approach for the secure control of networked LPV systems under pulse-width modulated DoS attacks

    Get PDF
In this paper, we formulate and analyze the problem of secure control in the context of networked linear parameter varying (LPV) systems. We consider an energy-constrained, pulse-width modulated (PWM) jammer, which corrupts the control communication channel by performing a denial-of-service (DoS) attack. In particular, the malicious attacker is able to erase the data sent to one or more actuators. In order to achieve secure control, we propose a virtual actuator technique under the assumption that the behavior of the attacker has been identified. The main advantage brought by this technique is that the existing components in the control system can be maintained without need of retuning them, since the virtual actuator will perform a reconfiguration of the plant, hiding the attack from the controller point of view. Using Lyapunov-based results that take into account the possible behavior of the attacker, design conditions for calculating the virtual actuators gains are obtained. A numerical example is used to illustrate the proposed secure control strategy.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
