Ecodesign of Batch Processes: Optimal Design Strategies for Economic and Ecological Bioprocesses
This work deals with the multicriteria cost-environment design of multiproduct batch plants, where the design variables are the equipment item sizes as well as the operating conditions. The case study is a multiproduct batch plant for the production of four recombinant proteins. Given the important combinatorial aspect of the problem, the approach used consists in coupling a stochastic algorithm, indeed a Genetic Algorithm (GA) with a Discrete Event Simulator (DES). To take into account the conflicting situations that may be encountered at the earliest stage of batch plant design, i.e. compromise situations between cost and environmental consideration, a Multicriteria Genetic Algorithm (MUGA) was developed with a Pareto optimal ranking method. The results show how the methodology can be used to find a range of trade-off solutions for optimizing batch plant design

Sustainability ranking of desalination plants using Mamdani Fuzzy Logic Inference Systems
As water desalination continues to expand globally, desalination plants are continually under pressure to meet the requirements of sustainable development. However, the majority of desalination sustainability research has focused on new desalination projects, with limited research on sustainability performance of existing desalination plants. This is particularly important while considering countries with limited resources for freshwater such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as it is heavily reliant on existing desalination infrastructure. In this regard, the current research deals with the sustainability analysis of desalination processes using a generic sustainability ranking framework based on Mamdani Fuzzy Logic Inference Systems. The fuzzy-based models were validated using data from two typical desalination plants in the UAE. The promising results obtained from the fuzzy ranking framework suggest this more in-depth sustainability analysis should be beneficial due to its flexibility and adaptability in meeting the requirements of desalination sustainability
A Realistic Model under which the Genetic Code is Optimal
The genetic code has a high level of error robustness. Using values of
hydrophobicity scales as a proxy for amino acid character, and the Mean Square
measure as a function quantifying error robustness, a value can be obtained for
a genetic code which reflects the error robustness of that code. By comparing
this value with a distribution of values belonging to codes generated by random
permutations of amino acid assignments, the level of error robustness of a
genetic code can be quantified. We present a calculation in which the standard
genetic code is shown to be optimal. We obtain this result by (1) using
recently updated values of polar requirement as input; (2) fixing seven
assignments (Ile, Trp, His, Phe, Tyr, Arg, and Leu) based on aptamer
considerations; and (3) using known biosynthetic relations of the 20 amino
acids. This last point is reflected in an approach of subdivision (restricting
the random reallocation of assignments to amino acid subgroups, the set of 20
being divided in four such subgroups). The three approaches to explain
robustness of the code (specific selection for robustness, amino acid-RNA
interactions leading to assignments, or a slow growth process of assignment
patterns) are reexamined in light of our findings. We offer a comprehensive
hypothesis, stressing the importance of biosynthetic relations, with the code
evolving from an early stage with just glycine and alanine, via intermediate
stages, towards 64 codons carrying todays meaning.Comment: 22 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables Journal of Molecular Evolution, July

Optimization of Window Positions for Wind-Driven Natural Ventilation Performance
This paper optimizes opening positions on building facades to maximize the natural ventilation’s potential for ventilation and cooling purposes. The paper demonstrates how to apply computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation results to architectural design processes, and how the CFD-driven decisions impact ventilation and cooling: (1) background: A CFD helps predict the natural ventilation’s potential, the integration of CFD results into design decision-making has not been actively practiced; (2) methods: Pressure data on building facades were obtained from CFD simulations and mapped into the 3D modeling environment, which were then used to identify optimal positions of two openings of a zone. The effect of the selected opening positions was validated with building energy simulations; (3) results: The cross-comparison study of different window positions based on different geographical locations quantified the impact on natural ventilation effectiveness; and (4) conclusions: The optimized window positions were shown to be effective, and some optimal solutions contradicted the typical cross-ventilation strategy
Advanced Integrated Power and Attitude Control System (IPACS) study
Integrated Power and Attitude Control System (IPACS) studies performed over a decade ago established the feasibility of simultaneously satisfying the demands of energy storage and attitude control through the use of rotating flywheels. It was demonstrated that, for a wide spectrum of applications, such a system possessed many advantages over contemporary energy storage and attitude control approaches. More recent technology advances in composite material rotors, magnetic suspension systems, and power control electronics have triggered new optimism regarding the applicability and merits of this concept. This study is undertaken to define an advanced IPACS and to evaluate its merits for a space station application. System and component designs are developed to establish the performance of this concept and system trade studies conducted to examine the viability of this approach relative to conventional candidate systems. It is clearly demonstrated that an advanced IPACS concept is not only feasible, but also offers substantial savings in mass and life-cycle cost for the space station mission
F100 multivariable control synthesis program: Evaluation of a multivariable control using a real-time engine simulation
The design, evaluation, and testing of a practical, multivariable, linear quadratic regulator control for the F100 turbofan engine were accomplished. NASA evaluation of the multivariable control logic and implementation are covered. The evaluation utilized a real time, hybrid computer simulation of the engine. Results of the evaluation are presented, and recommendations concerning future engine testing of the control are made. Results indicated that the engine testing of the control should be conducted as planned
Verification tools for probabilistic forecasts of continuous hydrological variables
In the present paper we describe some methods for verifying and evaluating probabilistic forecasts of hydrological variables. We propose an extension to continuous-valued variables of a verification method originated in the meteorological literature for the analysis of binary variables, and based on the use of a suitable cost-loss function to evaluate the quality of the forecasts. We find that this procedure is useful and reliable when it is complemented with other verification tools, borrowed from the economic literature, which are addressed to verify the statistical correctness of the probabilistic forecast. We illustrate our findings with a detailed application to the evaluation of probabilistic and deterministic forecasts of hourly discharge value
