This thesis comprises a rework of the Magento e-commerce content management system into an employee attendance tracking system. In the first part of the thesis the reasons for selecting Magento system are presented and also some already existing web solutions for employee attendance tracking are shown. Next is the presentation of the Magento system, that is, principles of its MVC architecture. After that follows the description of the tools on which Magento is based upon and some of the tools we used to make our employee attendance tracking software better. The second part describes the development process, which starts with the reduction of the Magento system, to a more general system for web based application development. With the help of the implementation process of our main module, which serves the purpose of the employee attendance tracking system, we describe the module development process in Magento system and present an example of extending a core functionality. Next, the presentation of the remaining functionalities implemented for our employee attendance tracking system follows, and the description of the design, which attempts to follow the newest trends in web application development. In the last part we present the goals of the future development of the application, where some of them are based on already existing functionalities of the Magento system

This paper shows some trends that are currently occurring in the environment of the semantic web. More specifically it presents schema.org, a project developed by Google, Yahoo and Bing for semantic markup using microdata, Freebase, a knowledge bank for structured information and Kasabi, a platform that operates into the modality of “Software as a Service” for the publication and commercial distribution of semantic data. It is possible see some technological divergence in the application of semantic Web standards with the development of new proposals as microdata, and the emergence of a market for linked data through publishing platforms that facilitate commercialization

This portfolio dissertation, comprised of three articles, seeks to clarify some of the trends and possibilities now open for new media communication by focusing on the material realities of the Web. New media and composition scholars are struggling with the materiality of digital technologies and their implications for pedagogy and literacy, often taking a materialist turn to understand them. The first article presents lessons, theories, student work, and students\u27 interpretations of their work in an attempt to open a discussion on the material goals behind multimodal rhetorical practice. The second article presents a multimodal case study, which examines the creation of a competency-based electronic portfolio system that values the web sensible digital portfolio model while maintaining the advantage of a web-serviced application. The goal of this assessment system is to materially embed humanistic assessment practices within the technological structures of the university. Finally, the third article proposes that Rhetoric Technical and Professional Communication (RTPC) departments consider the Rich Internet Application (RIA) model to focus our efforts on incorporating critical/functional literacies of technology into our curricula. The RIA model currently is reshaping the information architectures of the Web by combining interactive multimedia interfaces with web serviced application structures. By pursuing the RIA model, RTPC can position itself to be a leader in the study and development of IT products and industries in a way that does not betray its rhetorical foundation, or its allegiances to humanistic expression.*;*This dissertation is a compound document (contains both a paper copy and a CD as part of the dissertation). The CD requires the following system requirements: Macromedia Flash Player

Analyse the risks of ad hoc programming in web development and develop a metrics of appropriate tools

Today the World Wide Web has become one of the most powerful tools for business promotion and social networking. As the use of websites and web applications to promote the businesses has increased drastically over the past few years, the complexity of managing them and protecting them from security threats has become a complicated task for the organizations. On the other hand, most of the web projects are at risk and less secure due to lack of quality programming. Although there are plenty of frameworks available for free in the market to improve the quality of programming, most of the programmers use ad hoc programming rather than using frameworks which could save their time and repeated work. The research identifies the different frameworks in PHP and .NET programming, and evaluates their benefits and drawbacks in the web application development. The research aims to help web development companies to minimize the risks involved in developing large web projects and develop a metrics of appropriate frameworks to be used for the specific projects. The study examined the way web applications were developed in different software companies and the advantages of using frameworks while developing them. The findings of the results show that it was not only the experience of developers that motivated them to use frameworks. The major conclusions and recommendations drawn from this research were that the main reasons behind web developers avoiding frameworks are that they are difficult to learn and implement. Also, the motivations factors for programmers towards using frameworks were self-efficiency, habit of learning new things and awareness about the benefits of frameworks. The research recommended companies to use appropriate frameworks to protect their projects against security threats like SQL injection and RSS injectio

Security is an elusive target in today’s high-speed and extremely complex, Web enabled, information rich business environment. This paper presents the idea that there are essential, basic organizational elements that need to be identified, defined and addressed before examining security aspects of a Web Engineering Development process. These elements are derived from empirical evidence based on a Web survey and supporting literature. This paper makes two contributions. The first contribution is the identification of the Web Engineering specific elements that need to be acknowledged and resolved prior to the assessment of a Web Engineering process from a security perspective. The second contribution is that these elements can be used to help guide Security Improvement Initiatives in Web Engineering

The paper describes the results of a comprehensive literature and Internet survey on current trends in virtual Reality GIS (VRGIS). In the first part of the paper, a background of VRGIS is set, followed by the description and classification of the main research areas which focus in VRGIS research with an attempt to clarify the reasons that led the researchers to pursue a VR solution for the specific problems in their research field. Based on the observations from the current practice, the main definitions of VRGIS are discussed in the third section. Finally, future directions and possibilities for development are drawn
