A Comparison between the Face of the Veil of Manoppello and the Face of the Shroud of Turin

Recently we have studied the unusual optical properties of the Veil of Manoppello, a canvas representing the face of Jesus Christ, and restored digitally the face, by eliminating the distortions of the anatomic details due the yielding of the very fine structure of the fabric. The aim of the present paper is to compare the restored face of the Veil with that visible on the Turin Shroud. In particular, the paper focuses on assessing whether the two images can be superimposed, i.e., whether they are different images of the same face. Indeed, some scholars have suggested that the Veil of Manoppello and the Turin Shroud show different images of the same face. We demonstrate that the face of the Turin Shroud, after a logarithmic transformation of the intensity and the correction of the background noise, shows cheeks’ profiles, not visible before the digital processing, which overlap very well with those of the restored face of the Veil of Manoppello. These correlations between the two images of the face of Jesus raise the question of their historical relationship

Interdisciplinary Research Methodology for Secondary Level Social Studies: A Teaching Unit Concerning the Holy Shroud of Turin

In the past decade, numerous educational leaders have been critical of the quality of achievement of the educational system of the United States. Declining scores on standardized tests and the Scholastic Aptitude Test, illiteracy and the inequality of educational opportunities for America\u27s youth were a few of the concerns documented by educational leaders. In an effort to correct some of the existing problems, reform measures have been delineated by various commissions and educational authorities. The use of interdisciplinary curriculum, particularly in Social Studies, was among the suggestions for improving the quality of education. The purpose of this study was to present historical research concerning the Holy Shroud of Turin which could be used to demonstrate the development of an interdisciplinary curriculum approach suitable for use by instructors of secondary level Social Studies. An historical methodology research design was chosen to indicate the techniques utilized in gathering data concerning the Shroud of Turin. Data for the teaching unit concerning the Holy Shroud was acquired from a variety of sources. Public, university and college libraries were contacted for pertinent materials and the investigator\u27s personal library and files also contained materials related to the Holy Shroud. Written and oral communications with renowned sindonologists yielded invaluable information for this study. Individuals whose Religious Orders, had, at one time, housed the Holy Shroud also proved to be valuable sources of information. As a result of this extensive research, an interdisciplinary teaching unit concerning the Holy Shroud of Turin was presented. Further, the techniques, skills, tools, and information necessary for use by educational practitioners who wish to integrate interdisciplinary learning into their classrooms were presented. In conclusion, recommendations were made for consideration by educators as a means of improving the curriculum, particularly in relationship to secondary level Social Studies

Ambrose Bierce is Missing: And Other Historical Mysteries

What constitutes historical truth is often subject to change. Through ingenious detection, the accepted wisdom of one generation may become the discredited legend of another—or vice versa. In this wide- ranging study of historical investigation, former detective Joe Nickell allows the reader to look over his shoulder as he demonstrates the use of varied techniques in solving some of the world\u27s most perplexing mysteries. All the major categories of historical mystery are here—ancient riddles, biographical enigmas, hidden identity, “fakelore,” questioned artifacts, suspect documents, lost texts, obscured sources, and scientific challenges. Each is then illustrated by a complete case from the author\u27s own files. Nickell’s investigation of the giant Nazca drawings in Peru, for example—thought by some to provide proof of ancient extraterrestrial visitations—uses innovative techniques to reveal a very different origin. Other cases concern the 1913 disappearance of writer and journalist Ambrose Bierce, the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, the truth about the identity of John Demjanjuk (“Ivan the Terrible” to Polish death camp victims), the fate of a lost colonial American text, the authenticity of Abraham Lincoln\u27s celebrated Bixby letter, and the apparent real-life model for a mysterious character in a novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne. In reaching his solutions, Nickell demonstrates a wide variety of investigative techniques—chemical and instrumental analyses, physical experimentation, a “psychological autopsy,” forensic identification, archival research, linguistic analysis, folklore study, and many others. His highly readable book will intrigue the scholar and the history buff no less than the mystery lover. Joe Nickell, a former investigator for a world-famous detective agency, teaches at the University of Kentucky and is author of several books, including Pen, Ink, and Evidence.https://uknowledge.uky.edu/upk_history_in_general/1002/thumbnail.jp

The subject of this thesis is framed in the field of vibration based monitoring. In particular the work is focused on: implementing techniques of extraction of features, the use of collected data to recognize damages and the combined application of knowledge coming from monitoring systems with the classical structural safety formulations to a real case stud

Preferences Evaluation with a Choice Experiment on Cultural Heritage Tourism

This work focuses on the elicitation of tourist preferences from an economic evaluation standpoint and in relation to the Royal Savoy's Residences, a cultural network included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. After analyzing the visits to the Metropolitan Museum System of Turin City (Italy), a conjoint choice experiment was implemented, where future scenarios of public/private supply were defined by a certain number of tour packages, characterized by different services and prices. The results emphasize the complementarity of the transport rather than the food and wine services. The research also tries to give some suggestions about the understanding, measurement and evaluation of tourist behavior, opening new possibilities for future research directions in the area of the on-site tourist experienc

Very light UAV data and ranging methods for heritage documentation. The teaching activities of a master’s degree course

Even more the 3D documentation of the Built Heritage is requested for several metric purposes and digitization objectives. In the last years according to the evolution of the recording and processing techniques producing a 3D model become quite straightforward and is important to understand how the process could be managed and controlled. With this aim, starting from 2008 in the architecture master’s course of the Politecnico di Torino a Geomatics workshop is offered to the students. The paper deal with the experience carried out during the a.y. 2018-2019 with the aim of integrating data acquired by a very light UAV and different range-based sensors for documenting an historical and stratified fortified architecture. The problems related with the flight authorization and the followed strategies for data acquisition using the UAV and the employed range-based sensors are discussed. In conclusion the achieved metric products and the analyses are reported
