Relational Databases,Logical Databases and the Entity-Relationships Approach
A comparison of relational databases, as known in Data Management, and logical databases, as used in Artificial Intelligence is made. This comparison is then used to examine certain semantic issues raised by the Entity-Relationship Model
Logical Interpretation of Relational Databases
The reformulation of data management type databases in a formal, logical calculus is described. Advantages of this logical form are to provide a framework for automatic inferencing on the database as well as a formal clarification of the databases semantics. Principle applications are to artificially intelligent managerial decision support systems
Secondary predication in Russian
The paper makes two contributions to semantic typology of secondary predicates. It provides an explanation of the fact that Russian has no resultative secondary predicates, relating this explanation to the interpretation of secondary predicates in English. And it relates depictive secondary predicates in Russian, which usually occur in the instrumental case, to other uses of the instrumental case in Russian, establishing here, too, a difference to English concerning the scope of the secondary predication phenomenon
The Epistemological Foundations of Knowledge Representations
This paper looks at the epistemological foundations of knowledge
representations embodied in retrieval languages. It considers questions
such as the validity of knowledge representations and their effectiveness
for the purposes of retrieval and automation. The knowledge
representations it considers are derived from three theories of meaning that
have dominated twentieth-century philosophy.published or submitted for publicatio
