How can electric lighting contribute to human health and well-being?
Electric light in buildings may provide some health benefits; however, for most people these benefits are likely to be small. It is possible for electric lighting to cause health problems, if there is too little light or there is glare, but for the most part there is good guidance available and these problems can be avoided. The quality of the lit environment can have a psychological impact and this may in turn impact well-being. A starting point for this is perceived adequacy of illumination. Related lighting metrics are examined and a hypothetical explanation is suggested
Illumination strategies for intensity-only imaging
We propose a new strategy for narrow band, active array imaging of localized
scat- terers when only the intensities are recorded and measured at the array.
We consider a homogeneous medium so that wave propagation is fully coherent. We
show that imaging with intensity-only measurements can be carried out using the
time reversal operator of the imaging system, which can be obtained from
intensity measurements using an appropriate illumination strategy and the
polarization identity. Once the time reversal operator has been obtained, we
show that the images can be formed using its singular value decomposition
(SVD). We use two SVD-based methods to image the scatterers. The proposed
approach is simple and efficient. It does not need prior information about the
sought image, and guarantees exact recovery in the noise-free case.
Furthermore, it is robust with respect to additive noise. Detailed numerical
simulations illustrate the performance of the proposed imaging strategy when
only the intensities are captured
âPushing Throughâ in Platoâs Sophist: A New Reading of the Parity Assumption
At a crucial juncture in Platoâs Sophist, when the interlocutors have reached their deepest confusion about being and not-being, the Eleatic Visitor proclaims that there is yet hope. Insofar as they clarify one, he maintains, they will equally clarify the other. But what justifies the Visitorâs seemingly oracular prediction? A new interpretation explains how the Visitorâs hope is in fact warranted by the peculiar aporia they find themselves in. The passage describes a broader pattern of âexploring both sidesâ that lends insight into Platoâs aporetic method

Investigating Emotions in Creative Design
A wealth of research has suggested that emotions play a significant role in the creative problem solving process, but less work has focused on investigating the role of emotions in the design process. This is surprising given that creative problem solving lies at the heart of the design processes. In an exploratory study we interviewed 9 expert designers about their emotions during the design process. The content analysis allowed us to identify the various types of emotions relevant in the design process and to extend Wallasâ model of creative problem solving with emotional components for each of its stages. In addition, we identified two important roles of emotions in design and several ways in which expert designers regulate their emotions. We discussed the theoretical and practical applications of our work
