    Three steps towards practical application of public transport route optimisation in urban areas

    The research on computer-based optimisation of public transport networks has seen huge advances in recent years. However, there is almost no application of its results in real-world planning processes. A review of the literature identifies several possible reasons for this: a) many developed algorithms do not consider important details for urban applications, b) methods to generate the required input datasets struggle when applied to irregular urban networks, or c) the absence of an interface to use the developed algorithms with transport modelling software. The three publications presented in this thesis address these three issues. The first publication introduces a method to scale down an available street network to a level where optimisation methods can be applied while preserving its characteristics. All travel times, demand data, and information regarding the permitted route endpoints are derived from openly available data. The methodology is applied to the urban area of Nottingham, UK, to generate new benchmark datasets for bus route optimisation. An optimisation procedure centred on a genetic algorithm and adapted for the use of restricted route endpoints is applied to the generated dataset. In the second publication, these methodologies are extended to use a more realistic zone-based representation of passenger journeys. Zone-based trip representations are rarely used in academic studies as the conventional node-based approach is considered simpler to implement and many input datasets are publicly available. The publication presents a new hybrid-approach to calculate zone-based journey times using established node-based concepts, and introduces a first publicly available, zone-based input dataset. The third publication introduces an interface between route optimisation algorithms and the professional transport modelling software PTV Visum. The interface manages the differences in data requirements between the two modelling approaches, allowing users to directly optimise the public transport network in a given Visum network model. It is successfully combined with Selection Hyper Heuristics to optimise passenger travel time and operator costs in network models based on real-world planning processes.     Data-Driven Optimization of Public Transit Schedule

    Bus transit systems are the backbone of public transportation in the United States. An important indicator of the quality of service in such infrastructures is on-time performance at stops, with published transit schedules playing an integral role governing the level of success of the service. However there are relatively few optimization architectures leveraging stochastic search that focus on optimizing bus timetables with the objective of maximizing probability of bus arrivals at timepoints with delays within desired on-time ranges. In addition to this, there is a lack of substantial research considering monthly and seasonal variations of delay patterns integrated with such optimization strategies. To address these,this paper makes the following contributions to the corpus of studies on transit on-time performance optimization: (a) an unsupervised clustering mechanism is presented which groups months with similar seasonal delay patterns, (b) the problem is formulated as a single-objective optimization task and a greedy algorithm, a genetic algorithm (GA) as well as a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm are employed to solve it, (c) a detailed discussion on empirical results comparing the algorithms are provided and sensitivity analysis on hyper-parameters of the heuristics are presented along with execution times, which will help practitioners looking at similar problems. The analyses conducted are insightful in the local context of improving public transit scheduling in the Nashville metro region as well as informative from a global perspective as an elaborate case study which builds upon the growing corpus of empirical studies using nature-inspired approaches to transit schedule optimization.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, 2 table

    Shared Mobility Optimization in Large Scale Transportation Networks: Methodology and Applications

    abstract: Optimization of on-demand transportation systems and ride-sharing services involves solving a class of complex vehicle routing problems with pickup and delivery with time windows (VRPPDTW). Previous research has made a number of important contributions to the challenging pickup and delivery problem along different formulation or solution approaches. However, there are a number of modeling and algorithmic challenges for a large-scale deployment of a vehicle routing and scheduling algorithm, especially for regional networks with various road capacity and traffic delay constraints on freeway bottlenecks and signal timing on urban streets. The main thrust of this research is constructing hyper-networks to implicitly impose complicated constraints of a vehicle routing problem (VRP) into the model within the network construction. This research introduces a new methodology based on hyper-networks to solve the very important vehicle routing problem for the case of generic ride-sharing problem. Then, the idea of hyper-networks is applied for (1) solving the pickup and delivery problem with synchronized transfers, (2) computing resource hyper-prisms for sustainable transportation planning in the field of time-geography, and (3) providing an integrated framework that fully captures the interactions between supply and demand dimensions of travel to model the implications of advanced technologies and mobility services on traveler behavior.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering 201

    Exact and hyper?heuristic solutions for the distribution?installation problem from the VeRoLog 2019 challenge

    This work tackles a rich vehicle routing problem (VRP) problem integrating a capacitated vehicle routing problem with time windows (CVRPTW), and a service technician routing and scheduling problem (STRSP) for delivering various equipment based on customers' requests, and the subsequent installation by a number of technicians. The main objective is to reduce the overall costs of hired resources, and the total transportation costs of trucks/technicians. The problem was the topic of the fourth edition of the VeRoLog Solver Challenge in cooperation with the ORTEC company. Our contribution to research is the development of a mathematical model for this problem and a novel hyper?heuristic algorithm to solve the problem based on a population of solutions. Experimental results on two datasets of small and real?world size revealed the success of the hyper?heuristic approach in finding optimal solutions in a shorter computational time, when compared to our exact model. The results of the large size dataset were also compared to the results of the eight finalists in the competition and were found to be competitive, proving the potential of our developed hyper?heuristic framework

    REVISIÓN DE LA LITERATURA DEL PROBLEMA DE RUTEO DE VEHÍCULOS EN UN CONTEXTO DE TRANSPORTE VERDE

    In the efficient management of the supply chain the optimal management of transport of consumables and finished products appears. The costs associated with transport have direct impact on the final value consumers must pay, which in addition to requiring competitive products also demand that they are generated in environmentally friendly organizations. Aware of this reality, this document is intended to be a starting point for Master's and Doctoral degree students who want to work in a line of research recently proposed: green routing. The state of the art of the vehicle routing problem is presented in this paper, listing its variants, models and methodologies for solution. Furthermore, the proposed interaction between variants of classical routing problems and environmental effects of its operations, known in the literature as Green-VRP is presented. The goal is to generate a discussion in which mathematical models and solution strategies that can be applied within organizations that consider within their objectives an efficient and sustainable operation are posed. En el gerenciamiento eficiente de la cadena de suministro aparece la gestión óptima del transporte de insumos y productos terminados. Los costos asociados al transporte tienen impacto directo sobre el valor final que deben pagar los consumidores, que además de requerir productos competitivos también exigen que los mismos sean generados en organizaciones amigables con el medioambiente. Consientes de esa realidad este documento pretende ser un punto de partida para estudiantes de maestría y doctorado que quieran trabajar en una línea de investigación propuesta recientemente: el ruteo verde. En este trabajo se muestra un estado del arte del problema de ruteo de vehículos, enumerando sus variantes, modelos y metodologías de solución. Además, se presenta la interacción que se ha propuesto entre variantes clásicas de los problemas de ruteo y los efectos ambientales de su operación, denominados en la literatura como Green-VRP. El objetivo es generar una discusión donde se planteen modelos matemáticos y estrategias de solución que puedan ser aplicadas en organizaciones que consideren dentro de sus objetivos una operación eficiente y sustentable.
