    A multi-projector CAVE system with commodity hardware and gesture-based interaction

    Spatially-immersive systems such as CAVEs provide users with surrounding worlds by projecting 3D models on multiple screens around the viewer. Compared to alternative immersive systems such as HMDs, CAVE systems are a powerful tool for collaborative inspection of virtual environments due to better use of peripheral vision, less sensitivity to tracking errors, and higher communication possibilities among users. Unfortunately, traditional CAVE setups require sophisticated equipment including stereo-ready projectors and tracking systems with high acquisition and maintenance costs. In this paper we present the design and construction of a passive-stereo, four-wall CAVE system based on commodity hardware. Our system works with any mix of a wide range of projector models that can be replaced independently at any time, and achieves high resolution and brightness at a minimum cost. The key ingredients of our CAVE are a self-calibration approach that guarantees continuity across the screen, as well as a gesture-based interaction approach based on a clever combination of skeletal data from multiple Kinect sensors.Preprin

    Predicting continuous conflict perception with Bayesian Gaussian processes

    Conflict is one of the most important phenomena of social life, but it is still largely neglected by the computing community. This work proposes an approach that detects common conversational social signals (loudness, overlapping speech, etc.) and predicts the conflict level perceived by human observers in continuous, non-categorical terms. The proposed regression approach is fully Bayesian and it adopts Automatic Relevance Determination to identify the social signals that influence most the outcome of the prediction. The experiments are performed over the SSPNet Conflict Corpus, a publicly available collection of 1430 clips extracted from televised political debates (roughly 12 hours of material for 138 subjects in total). The results show that it is possible to achieve a correlation close to 0.8 between actual and predicted conflict perception

    Novel Algorithm for Hand Gesture Modeling Using Genetic Algorithm with Variable Length Chromosome

    Many languages the people can exploit for them in order to communicate among them and get the message delivered, but, these languages should be known by those people in order to understand and speak, contrarily, gesture system is the common language that can be adopted for this objective and need less knowledge as compared with spoken languages that need the grammatically and semantically rules, in this paper we applied a novel algorithm for capturing hand gesture shape using one of the evolutionary algorithms in order to fit the hand segment. Previous techniques in the literature that fully captured hand shape applied some artificial intelligent methods [1] or some statistical methods [2]. Genetic Algorithms (GAs) with variable length of chromosomes is used to model the hand structure. The most effective GA parameters used for this purpose are; the generation of initial population, tournament selection, crossover with variable position of the cutting points in the parents, artificial mutation operator, deleting of the repetitive genes in same individual, and elitism strategy. Experimental results shows the robust and efficiency of applying the proposed algorithm

    Micro-expression Recognition using Spatiotemporal Texture Map and Motion Magnification

    Micro-expressions are short-lived, rapid facial expressions that are exhibited by individuals when they are in high stakes situations. Studying these micro-expressions is important as these cannot be modified by an individual and hence offer us a peek into what the individual is actually feeling and thinking as opposed to what he/she is trying to portray. The spotting and recognition of micro-expressions has applications in the fields of criminal investigation, psychotherapy, education etc. However due to micro-expressions’ short-lived and rapid nature; spotting, recognizing and classifying them is a major challenge. In this paper, we design a hybrid approach for spotting and recognizing micro-expressions by utilizing motion magnification using Eulerian Video Magnification and Spatiotemporal Texture Map (STTM). The validation of this approach was done on the spontaneous micro-expression dataset, CASMEII in comparison with the baseline. This approach achieved an accuracy of 80% viz. an increase by 5% as compared to the existing baseline by utilizing 10-fold cross validation using Support Vector Machines (SVM) with a linear kernel
