    Making big steps in trajectories

    We consider the solution of initial value problems within the context of hybrid systems and emphasise the use of high precision approximations (in software for exact real arithmetic). We propose a novel algorithm for the computation of trajectories up to the area where discontinuous jumps appear, applicable for holomorphic flow functions. Examples with a prototypical implementation illustrate that the algorithm might provide results with higher precision than well-known ODE solvers at a similar computation time

    A multi-domain implementation of the pseudo-spectral method and compact finite difference schemes for solving time-dependent differential equations

    Abstract : In this dissertation, we introduce new numerical methods for solving time-dependant differential equations. These methods involve dividing the domain of the problem into multiple sub domains. The nonlinearity of the differential equations is dealt with by using a Gauss-Seidel like relaxation or quasilinearisation technique. To solve the linearized iteration schemes obtained we use either higher order compact finite difference schemes or spectral collocation methods and we call the resulting methods the multi-domain compact finite difference relaxation method (MD-CFDRM), multi-domain compact finite difference quasilinearisation method (MD-CFDQLM) and multi-domain bivariate spectral quasilinearisation method (MD-BSQLM) respectively. We test the applicability of these methods in a wide variety of differential equations. The accuracy is compared against other methods as well as other results from literature. The MD-CFDRM is used to solve famous chaotic systems and hyperchaotic systems. Chaotic and hyperchaotic systems are characterized by high sensitivity to small perturbation on initial data and rapidly changing solutions. Such rapid variations in the solution pose tremendous problems to a number of numerical approximations. We modify the CFDs to be able to deal with such systems of equations. We also used the MD-CFDQLM to solve the nonlinear evolution partial differential equations, namely, the Fisher’s equation, Burgers- Fisher equation, Burgers-Huxley equation and the coupled Burgers’ equations over a large time domain. The main advantage of this approach is that it offers better accuracy on coarser grids which significantly improves the computational speed of the method for large time domain. We also studied the generalized Kuramoto-Sivashinsky (GKS) equations. The KS equations exhibit chaotic behaviour under certain conditions.     Analysis of \u3ci\u3ea posteriori\u3c/i\u3e error estimates of the discontinuous Galerkin method for nonlinear ordinary differential equations

    We develop and analyze a new residual-based a posteriori error estimator for the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method for nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The a posteriori DG error estimator under investigation is computationally simple, efficient, and asymptotically exact. It is obtained by solving a local residual problem with no boundary condition on each element. We first prove that the DG solution exhibits an optimal O(hp+1) convergence rate in the L2-norm when p-degree piece-wise polynomials with p ≥1 are used. We further prove that the DG solution is O(h2p+1) superconvergent at the downwind points. We use these results to prove that the p-degree DG solution is O(hp+2) super close to a particular projection of the exact solution. This superconvergence result allows us to show that the true error can be divided into a significant part and a less significant part. The significant part of the discretization error for the DG solution is proportional to the (p +1)-degree right Radau polynomial and the less significant part converges at O(hp+2) rate in the L2-norm. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the theoretical rates are optimal. Based on the global superconvergent approximations, we construct asymptotically exact a posteriori error estimates and prove that they converge to the true errors in the L2-norm under mesh refinement. The order of convergence is proved to be p +2. Finally, we prove that the global effectivity index in the L2-norm converges to unity at O(h)rate. Several numerical examples are provided to illustrate the global superconvergence results and the convergence of the proposed estimator under mesh refinement. A local adaptive procedure that makes use of our local a posteriori error estimate is also presented

    Initial Value Problem Enhanced Sampling for Closed-Loop Optimal Control Design with Deep Neural Networks

    Closed-loop optimal control design for high-dimensional nonlinear systems has been a long-standing challenge. Traditional methods, such as solving the associated Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation, suffer from the curse of dimensionality. Recent literature proposed a new promising approach based on supervised learning, by leveraging powerful open-loop optimal control solvers to generate training data and neural networks as efficient high-dimensional function approximators to fit the closed-loop optimal control. This approach successfully handles certain high-dimensional optimal control problems but still performs poorly on more challenging problems. One of the crucial reasons for the failure is the so-called distribution mismatch phenomenon brought by the controlled dynamics. In this paper, we investigate this phenomenon and propose the initial value problem enhanced sampling method to mitigate this problem. We theoretically prove that this sampling strategy improves over the vanilla strategy on the classical linear-quadratic regulator by a factor proportional to the total time duration. We further numerically demonstrate that the proposed sampling strategy significantly improves the performance on tested control problems, including the optimal landing problem of a quadrotor and the optimal reaching problem of a 7 DoF manipulator

    Impulsive Hybrid Discrete-Continuous Delay Differential Equations

    This thesis deals with impulsive hybrid discrete-continuous delay differential equations (IHDDEs). This new class of differential equations is highly challenging for two reasons. First, because of a dependency of the right-hand-side function on past states, with time delays that depend on the current state. Second, because both the right-hand-side function and the state itself are discontinuous at implicitly defined time points. The theoretical results and numerical methods presented in this thesis are related to the following subject areas: First, solutions of initial value problems (IVPs) in IHDDEs. Second, derivatives of IVP solutions with respect to parameters (“sensitivities”). Third, estimation of parameters in IHDDE models from experimental data. Amongst others, this thesis thereby makes the following contributions: - The theoretical basis of IHDDE-IVPs is established. This includes the definition of a solution concept, the existence of solutions, the uniqueness of solutions, and the differentiability of solutions with respect to parameters. - A new approach for numerically solving IVPs in differential equations with time delays is introduced. A key aspect is the use of extrapolations beyond past discontinuities. Convergence of continuous Runge-Kutta methods realized in the framework of the new approach is shown, and numerical results are presented that demonstrate the benefit of using extrapolations on a practical example. - A “first discretize, then differentiate” approach and a “first differentiate, then discretize” approach for forward sensitivity computation in IHDDEs are investigated. It is revealed that the presence of time delays destroys commutativity of differentiation and discretization in the case of continuous Runge-Kutta methods. - An extension of the concept of Internal Numerical Differentiation is proposed for differential equations with time delays. The use of the extended concept ensures that numerically computed sensitivities converge to the exact sensitivities, and that the convergence order is identical to the convergence order of the method that is used for solving the nominal IVP. - The first practical forward and adjoint schemes are developed that realize Internal Numerical Differentiation for IHDDEs. Numerical investigations show that the developed schemes are drastically more efficient than classical methods for sensitivity computation. - The new numerical methods for solving IVPs and for computing sensitivites are successfully applied to several challenging test cases, and the properties of the methods are analysed. - Numerical methods are presented for solving nonlinear least-squares parameter estimation problems constrained by IHDDEs. - A new epidemiological IHDDE model is developed. Therein, an impulse accounts for the arrival of an infected population. Further, the zeros of state-dependent switching functions characterize the time points at which new medical treatments become available. - A delay differential equation model is presented for the crosstalk of the signaling pathways of two cytokines. In comparison to an ordinary differential equation model, a better fit to experimental data is obtained with a smaller number of differential states. - A novel model is proposed to describe the voting behavior of the viewers of the TV singing competition “Unser Star für Baku” aired in 2012. Numerical results show that the use of a time delay is crucial for a qualitative correct description of the voting behavior. Furthermore, parameter estimation results yield a good quantitative agreeement with data from the TV show. - The practical implementation of all developed methods in the new software packages Colsol-DDE and ParamEDE is described
