    A fuzzy optimization approach for procurement transport operational planning in an automobile supply chain

    We consider a real-world automobile supply chain in which a first-tier supplier serves an assembler and determines its procurement transport planning for a second-tier supplier by using the automobile assembler's demand information, the available capacity of trucks and inventory levels. The proposed fuzzy multi-objective integer linear programming model (FMOILP) improves the transport planning process for material procurement at the first-tier supplier level, which is subject to product groups composed of items that must be ordered together, order lot sizes, fuzzy aspiration levels for inventory and used trucks and uncertain truck maximum available capacities and minimum percentages of demand in stock. Regarding the defuzzification process, we apply two existing methods based on the weighted average method to convert the FMOILP into a crisp MOILP to then apply two different aggregation functions, which we compare, to transform this crisp MOILP into a single objective MILP model. A sensitivity analysis is included to show the impact of the objectives weight vector on the final solutions. The model, based on the full truck load material pick method, provides the quantity of products and number of containers to be loaded per truck and period. An industrial automobile supply chain case study demonstrates the feasibility of applying the proposed model and the solution methodology to a realistic procurement transport planning problem. The results provide lower stock levels and higher occupation of the trucks used to fulfill both demand and minimum inventory requirements than those obtained by the manual spreadsheet-based method.     An MINLP model to support the movement and storage decisions of the Indian food grain supply chain

    This paper addresses the novel three stage food grain distribution problem of Public Distribution System (PDS) in India which comprises of farmers, procurement centers, base silos and field silos. The Indian food grain supply chain consists of various activities such as procurement, storage, transportation and distribution of food grain. In order to curb transportation and storage losses of food grain, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) is moving towards the modernized bulk food grain supply chain system. This paper develops a Mixed Integer Non-Linear Programming (MINLP) model for planning the movement and storage of food grain from surplus states to deficit states considering the seasonal procurement, silo capacity, demand satisfaction and vehicle capacity constraints. The objective function of the model seeks to minimize the bulk food grain transportation, inventory holding, and operational cost. Therein, shipment cost contains the fixed and variable cost, inventory holding and operational cost considered at the procurement centers and base silos. The developed mathematical model is computationally complex in nature due to nonlinearity, the presence of numerous binary and integer variables along with a huge number of constraints, thus, it is very difficult to solve it using exact methods. Therefore, recently developed, Hybrid Particle-Chemical Reaction Optimization (HP-CRO) algorithm has been employed to solve the MINLP model. Different problem instances with growing complexities are solved using HP-CRO and the results are compared with basic Chemical Reaction Optimization (CRO) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithms. The results of computational experiments illustrate that the HP-CRO algorithm is competent enough to obtain the better quality solutions within reasonable computational time

    Integrated Scheduling of Vessels, Cranes and Trains to Minimize Delays in a Seaport Container Terminal

    The multiple processes taking place on a daily basis at an intermodal container terminal are often considered individually, given the complexity of their joint consideration. Nevertheless, the integrated planning and scheduling of operations in an intermodal terminal, including the arrivals and departures of trains and vessels, is a very relevant topic for terminal managers, which can benefit from the application of Operations Research (OR) techniques to obtain near-optimal solutions without excessive computational cost. Applying the functional integration technique, we present here a mathematical model for this terminal planning process, and solve it using heuristic procedures, given its complexity and size. Details on the benchmark comparison of a genetic algorithm, a simulated annealing routine and a tabu search are provided for different problem instances
