    A Tabu Search Based Metaheuristic for Dynamic Carpooling Optimization

    International audienceThe carpooling problem consists in matching a set of riders' requests with a set of drivers' offers by synchronizing their origins, destinations and time windows. The paper presents the so-called Dynamic Carpooling Optimization System (DyCOS), a system which supports the automatic and optimal ridematching process between users on very short notice or even en-route. Nowadays, there are numerous research contributions that revolve around the carpooling problem, notably in the dynamic context. However, the problem's high complexity and the real time aspect are still challenges to overcome when addressing dynamic carpooling. To counter these issues, DyCOS takes decisions using a novel Tabu Search based metaheuristic. The proposed algorithm employs an explicit memory system and several original searching strategies developed to make optimal decisions automatically. To increase users' satisfaction, the proposed metaheuristic approach manages the transfer process and includes the possibility to drop off the passenger at a given walking distance from his destination or at a transfer node. In addition, the detour concept is used as an original aspiration process, to avoid the entrapment by local solutions and improve the generated solution. For a rigorous assessment of generated solutions , while considering the importance and interaction among the optimization criteria, the algorithm adopts the Choquet integral operator as an aggregation approach. To measure the effectiveness of the proposed method, we develop a simulation environment based on actual carpooling demand data from the metropolitan area of Lille in the north of France

    Facility layout planning. An extended literature review

    [EN] Facility layout planning (FLP) involves a set of design problems related to the arrangement of the elements that shape industrial production systems in a physical space. The fact that they are considered one of the most important design decisions as part of business operation strategies, and their proven repercussion on production systems' operation costs, efficiency and productivity, mean that this theme has been widely addressed in science. In this context, the present article offers a scientific literature review about FLP from the operations management perspective. The 232 reviewed articles were classified as a large taxonomy based on type of problem, approach and planning stage and characteristics of production facilities by configuring the material handling system and methods to generate and assess layout alternatives. We stress that the generation of layout alternatives was done mainly using mathematical optimisation models, specifically discrete quadratic programming models for similar sized departments, or continuous linear and non-linear mixed integer programming models for different sized departments. Other approaches followed to generate layout alternatives were expert's knowledge and specialised software packages.     The design of a manufacturing system is normally performed in two distinct stages, i.e. steady state design and dynamic state design. Within each system design stage a variety of decisions need to be made of which essential ones are the determination of the product range to be manufactured, the layout of equipment on the shopfloor, allocation of work tasks to workstations, planning of aggregate capacity requirements and determining the lot sizes to be processed. This research work has examined the individual problem areas listed above in order to identify the efficiency of current solution techniques and to determine the problems experienced with their use. It has been identified that for each design problem. although there are an assortment of solution techniques available, the majority of these techniques are unable to generate optimal or near optimal solutions to problems of a practical size. In addition, a variety of limitations have been identified that restrict the use of existing techniques. For example, existing methods are limited with respect to the external conditions over which they are applicable and/or cannot enable qualitative or subjective judgements of experienced personnel to influence solution outcomes. An investigation of optimization techniques has been carried out which indicated that genetic algorithms offer great potential in solving the variety of problem areas involved in manufacturing systems design. This research has, therefore, concentrated on testing the use of genetic algorithms to make individual manufacturing design decisions. In particular, the ability of genetic algorithms to generate better solutions than existing techniques has been examined and their ability to overcome the range of limitations that exist with current solution techniques. IIFor each problem area, a typical solution has been coded in terms of a genetic algorithm structure, a suitable objective function constructed and experiments performed to identify the most suitable operators and operator parameter values to use. The best solution generated using these parameters has then been compared with the solution derived using a traditional solution technique. In addition, from the range of experiments undertaken the underlying relationships have been identified between problem characteristics and optimality of operator types and parameter values. The results of the research have identified that genetic algorithms could provide an improved solution technique for all manufacturing design decision areas investigated. In most areas genetic algorithms identified lower cost solutions and overcame many of the limitations of existing techniques

    Preventing premature convergence and proving the optimality in evolutionary algorithms

    http://ea2013.inria.fr//proceedings.pdfInternational audienceEvolutionary Algorithms (EA) usually carry out an efficient exploration of the search-space, but get often trapped in local minima and do not prove the optimality of the solution. Interval-based techniques, on the other hand, yield a numerical proof of optimality of the solution. However, they may fail to converge within a reasonable time due to their inability to quickly compute a good approximation of the global minimum and their exponential complexity. The contribution of this paper is a hybrid algorithm called Charibde in which a particular EA, Differential Evolution, cooperates with a Branch and Bound algorithm endowed with interval propagation techniques. It prevents premature convergence toward local optima and outperforms both deterministic and stochastic existing approaches. We demonstrate its efficiency on a benchmark of highly multimodal problems, for which we provide previously unknown global minima and certification of optimality

    Multi-objective tools for the vehicle routing problem with time windows

    Most real-life problems involve the simultaneous optimisation of two or more, usually conflicting, objectives. Researchers have put a continuous effort into solving these problems in many different areas, such as engineering, finance and computer science. Over time, thanks to the increase in processing power, researchers have created methods which have become increasingly sophisticated. Most of these methods have been based on the notion of Pareto dominance, which assumes, sometimes erroneously, that the objectives have no known ranking of importance. The Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows (VRPTW) is a logistics problem which in real-life applications appears to be multi-objective. This problem consists of designing the optimal set of routes to serve a number of customers within certain time slots. Despite this problem’s high applicability to real-life domains (e.g. waste collection, fast-food delivery), most research in this area has been conducted with hand-made datasets. These datasets sometimes have a number of unrealistic features (e.g. the assumption that one unit of travel time corresponds to one unit of travel distance) and are therefore not adequate for the assessment of optimisers. Furthermore, very few studies have focused on the multi-objective nature of the VRPTW. That is, very few have studied how the optimisation of one objective affects the others. This thesis proposes a number of novel tools (methods + dataset) to address the above- mentioned challenges: 1) an agent-based framework for cooperative search, 2) a novel multi-objective ranking approach, 3) a new dataset for the VRPTW, 4) a study of the pair-wise relationships between five common objectives in VRPTW, and 5) a simplified Multi-objective Discrete Particle Swarm Optimisation for the VRPTW
