    Extending the solid step fixed-charge transportation problem to consider two-stage networks and multi-item shipments

    This paper develops a new mathematical model for a capacitated solid step fixed-charge transportation problem. The problem is formulated as a two-stage transportation network and considers the option of shipping multiple items from the plants to the distribution centers (DC) and afterwards from DCs to customers. In order to tackle such an NP-hard problem, we propose two meta-heuristic algorithms; namely, Simulated Annealing (SA) and Imperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA). Contrary to the previous studies, new neighborhood strategies maintaining the feasibility of the problem are developed. Additionally, the Taguchi method is used to tune the parameters of the algorithms. In order to validate and evaluate the performances of the model and algorithms, the results of the proposed SA and ICA are compared. The computational results show that the proposed algorithms provide relatively good solutions in a reasonable amount of time. Furthermore, the related comparison reveals that the ICA generates superior solutions compared to the ones obtained by the SA algorithm

    A fuzzy optimization approach for procurement transport operational planning in an automobile supply chain

    We consider a real-world automobile supply chain in which a first-tier supplier serves an assembler and determines its procurement transport planning for a second-tier supplier by using the automobile assembler's demand information, the available capacity of trucks and inventory levels. The proposed fuzzy multi-objective integer linear programming model (FMOILP) improves the transport planning process for material procurement at the first-tier supplier level, which is subject to product groups composed of items that must be ordered together, order lot sizes, fuzzy aspiration levels for inventory and used trucks and uncertain truck maximum available capacities and minimum percentages of demand in stock. Regarding the defuzzification process, we apply two existing methods based on the weighted average method to convert the FMOILP into a crisp MOILP to then apply two different aggregation functions, which we compare, to transform this crisp MOILP into a single objective MILP model. A sensitivity analysis is included to show the impact of the objectives weight vector on the final solutions. The model, based on the full truck load material pick method, provides the quantity of products and number of containers to be loaded per truck and period. An industrial automobile supply chain case study demonstrates the feasibility of applying the proposed model and the solution methodology to a realistic procurement transport planning problem. The results provide lower stock levels and higher occupation of the trucks used to fulfill both demand and minimum inventory requirements than those obtained by the manual spreadsheet-based method.     An estimation of distribution algorithm for combinatorial optimization problems

    This paper considers solving more than one combinatorial problem considered some of the most difficult to solve in the combinatorial optimization field, such as the job shop scheduling problem (JSSP), the vehicle routing problem with time windows (VRPTW), and the quay crane scheduling problem (QCSP). A hybrid metaheuristic algorithm that integrates the Mallows model and the Moth-flame algorithm solves these problems. Through an exponential function, the Mallows model emulates the solution space distribution for the problems; meanwhile, the Moth-flame algorithm is in charge of determining how to produce the offspring by a geometric function that helps identify the new solutions. The proposed metaheuristic, called HEDAMMF (Hybrid Estimation of Distribution Algorithm with Mallows model and Moth-Flame algorithm), improves the performance of recent algorithms. Although knowing the algebra of permutations is required to understand the proposed metaheuristic, utilizing the HEDAMMF is justified because certain problems are fixed differently under different circumstances. These problems do not share the same objective function (fitness) and/or the same constraints. Therefore, it is not possible to use a single model problem. The aforementioned approach is able to outperform recent algorithms under different metrics for these three combinatorial problems. Finally, it is possible to conclude that the hybrid metaheuristics have a better performance, or equal in effectiveness than recent algorithms

    Bulk wheat transportation and storage problem of public distribution system

    This research investigates the multi-period multi-modal bulk wheat transportation and storage problem in a two-stage supply chain network of Public Distribution System (PDS). The bulk transportation and storage can significantly curtail the transit and storage losses of food grains, which leads to substantial cost savings. A mixed integer non-linear programming model (MINLP) is developed after studying the Indian wheat supply chain scenario, where the objective is to minimize the transportation, storage and operational cost of the food grain incurred for efficient transfer of wheat from producing states to consuming states. The cost minimization of Indian food grain supply chain is a very complex and challenging problem because of the involvement of the many entities and their constraints such as seasonal procurement, limited scientific storages, varying demand, mode of transportation and vehicle capacity constraints. To address this complex and challenging problem of food grain supply chain, we have proposed the novel variant of Chemical Reaction Optimization (CRO) algorithm which combines the features of CRO and Tabu search (TS) and named it as a hybrid CROTS algorithm (Chemical reaction optimization combined with Tabu Search). The numerous problems with different sizes are solved using the proposed algorithm and obtained results have been compared with CRO. The comparative study reveals that the proposed CROTS algorithm offers a better solution in less computational time than CRO algorithm and the dominance of CROTS algorithm over the CRO algorithm is demonstrated through statistical analysis

    Optimizing transportation systems and logistics network configurations : From biased-randomized algorithms to fuzzy simheuristics

    242 páginasTransportation and logistics (T&L) are currently highly relevant functions in any competitive industry. Locating facilities or distributing goods to hundreds or thousands of customers are activities with a high degree of complexity, regardless of whether facilities and customers are placed all over the globe or in the same city. A countless number of alternative strategic, tactical, and operational decisions can be made in T&L systems; hence, reaching an optimal solution –e.g., a solution with the minimum cost or the maximum profit– is a really difficult challenge, even by the most powerful existing computers. Approximate methods, such as heuristics, metaheuristics, and simheuristics, are then proposed to solve T&L problems. They do not guarantee optimal results, but they yield good solutions in short computational times. These characteristics become even more important when considering uncertainty conditions, since they increase T&L problems’ complexity. Modeling uncertainty implies to introduce complex mathematical formulas and procedures, however, the model realism increases and, therefore, also its reliability to represent real world situations. Stochastic approaches, which require the use of probability distributions, are one of the most employed approaches to model uncertain parameters. Alternatively, if the real world does not provide enough information to reliably estimate a probability distribution, then fuzzy logic approaches become an alternative to model uncertainty. Hence, the main objective of this thesis is to design hybrid algorithms that combine fuzzy and stochastic simulation with approximate and exact methods to solve T&L problems considering operational, tactical, and strategic decision levels. This thesis is organized following a layered structure, in which each introduced layer enriches the previous one.El transporte y la logística (T&L) son actualmente funciones de gran relevancia en cual quier industria competitiva. La localización de instalaciones o la distribución de mercancías a cientos o miles de clientes son actividades con un alto grado de complejidad, indepen dientemente de si las instalaciones y los clientes se encuentran en todo el mundo o en la misma ciudad. En los sistemas de T&L se pueden tomar un sinnúmero de decisiones al ternativas estratégicas, tácticas y operativas; por lo tanto, llegar a una solución óptima –por ejemplo, una solución con el mínimo costo o la máxima utilidad– es un desafío realmente di fícil, incluso para las computadoras más potentes que existen hoy en día. Así pues, métodos aproximados, tales como heurísticas, metaheurísticas y simheurísticas, son propuestos para resolver problemas de T&L. Estos métodos no garantizan resultados óptimos, pero ofrecen buenas soluciones en tiempos computacionales cortos. Estas características se vuelven aún más importantes cuando se consideran condiciones de incertidumbre, ya que estas aumen tan la complejidad de los problemas de T&L. Modelar la incertidumbre implica introducir fórmulas y procedimientos matemáticos complejos, sin embargo, el realismo del modelo aumenta y, por lo tanto, también su confiabilidad para representar situaciones del mundo real. Los enfoques estocásticos, que requieren el uso de distribuciones de probabilidad, son uno de los enfoques más empleados para modelar parámetros inciertos. Alternativamente, si el mundo real no proporciona suficiente información para estimar de manera confiable una distribución de probabilidad, los enfoques que hacen uso de lógica difusa se convier ten en una alternativa para modelar la incertidumbre. Así pues, el objetivo principal de esta tesis es diseñar algoritmos híbridos que combinen simulación difusa y estocástica con métodos aproximados y exactos para resolver problemas de T&L considerando niveles de decisión operativos, tácticos y estratégicos. Esta tesis se organiza siguiendo una estructura por capas, en la que cada capa introducida enriquece a la anterior. Por lo tanto, en primer lugar se exponen heurísticas y metaheurísticas sesgadas-aleatorizadas para resolver proble mas de T&L que solo incluyen parámetros determinísticos. Posteriormente, la simulación Monte Carlo se agrega a estos enfoques para modelar parámetros estocásticos. Por último, se emplean simheurísticas difusas para abordar simultáneamente la incertidumbre difusa y estocástica. Una serie de experimentos numéricos es diseñada para probar los algoritmos propuestos, utilizando instancias de referencia, instancias nuevas e instancias del mundo real.     From metaheuristics to learnheuristics: Applications to logistics, finance, and computing

    Un gran nombre de processos de presa de decisions en sectors estratègics com el transport i la producció representen problemes NP-difícils. Sovint, aquests processos es caracteritzen per alts nivells d'incertesa i dinamisme. Les metaheurístiques són mètodes populars per a resoldre problemes d'optimització difícils en temps de càlcul raonables. No obstant això, sovint assumeixen que els inputs, les funcions objectiu, i les restriccions són deterministes i conegudes. Aquests constitueixen supòsits forts que obliguen a treballar amb problemes simplificats. Com a conseqüència, les solucions poden conduir a resultats pobres. Les simheurístiques integren la simulació a les metaheurístiques per resoldre problemes estocàstics d'una manera natural. Anàlogament, les learnheurístiques combinen l'estadística amb les metaheurístiques per fer front a problemes en entorns dinàmics, en què els inputs poden dependre de l'estructura de la solució. En aquest context, les principals contribucions d'aquesta tesi són: el disseny de les learnheurístiques, una classificació dels treballs que combinen l'estadística / l'aprenentatge automàtic i les metaheurístiques, i diverses aplicacions en transport, producció, finances i computació.Un gran número de procesos de toma de decisiones en sectores estratégicos como el transporte y la producción representan problemas NP-difíciles. Frecuentemente, estos problemas se caracterizan por altos niveles de incertidumbre y dinamismo. Las metaheurísticas son métodos populares para resolver problemas difíciles de optimización de manera rápida. Sin embargo, suelen asumir que los inputs, las funciones objetivo y las restricciones son deterministas y se conocen de antemano. Estas fuertes suposiciones conducen a trabajar con problemas simplificados. Como consecuencia, las soluciones obtenidas pueden tener un pobre rendimiento. Las simheurísticas integran simulación en metaheurísticas para resolver problemas estocásticos de una manera natural. De manera similar, las learnheurísticas combinan aprendizaje estadístico y metaheurísticas para abordar problemas en entornos dinámicos, donde los inputs pueden depender de la estructura de la solución. En este contexto, las principales aportaciones de esta tesis son: el diseño de las learnheurísticas, una clasificación de trabajos que combinan estadística / aprendizaje automático y metaheurísticas, y varias aplicaciones en transporte, producción, finanzas y computación.A large number of decision-making processes in strategic sectors such as transport and production involve NP-hard problems, which are frequently characterized by high levels of uncertainty and dynamism. Metaheuristics have become the predominant method for solving challenging optimization problems in reasonable computing times. However, they frequently assume that inputs, objective functions and constraints are deterministic and known in advance. These strong assumptions lead to work on oversimplified problems, and the solutions may demonstrate poor performance when implemented. Simheuristics, in turn, integrate simulation into metaheuristics as a way to naturally solve stochastic problems, and, in a similar fashion, learnheuristics combine statistical learning and metaheuristics to tackle problems in dynamic environments, where inputs may depend on the structure of the solution. The main contributions of this thesis include (i) a design for learnheuristics; (ii) a classification of works that hybridize statistical and machine learning and metaheuristics; and (iii) several applications for the fields of transport, production, finance and computing

    A solution method for a two-layer sustainable supply chain distribution model

    This article presents an effective solution method for a two-layer, NP-hard sustainable supply chain distribution model. A DoE-guided MOGA-II optimiser based solution method is proposed for locating a set of non-dominated solutions distributed along the Pareto frontier. The solution method allows decision-makers to prioritise the realistic solutions, while focusing on alternate transportation scenarios. The solution method has been implemented for the case of an Irish dairy processing industry׳s two-layer supply chain network. The DoE generates 6100 real feasible solutions after 100 generations of the MOGA-II optimiser which are then refined using statistical experimentation. As the decision-maker is presented with a choice of several distribution routes on the demand side of the two-layer network, TOPSIS is applied to rank the set of non-dominated solutions thus facilitating the selection of the best sustainable distribution route. The solution method characterises the Pareto solutions from disparate scenarios through numerical and statistical experimentations. A set of realistic routes from plants to consumers is derived and mapped which minimises total CO2 emissions and costs where it can be seen that the solution method outperforms existing solution methods

    Solving the waste collection problem from a multiobjective perspective: New methodologies and case studies

    Fecha de lectura Tesis Doctoral: 19 de marzo de 2018.Economía Aplicada ( Matemáticas) Resumen tesis: El tratamiento de residuos es un tema de estudio por parte de las administraciones locales a nivel mundial. Distintos factores han de tenerse en cuenta para realizar un servicio eficiente. En este trabajo se desarrolla una herramienta para analizar y resolver el problema de la recogida de residuos sólidos en Málaga. Tras un análisis exhaustivo de los datos, se aborda el problema real como un problema de rutas multiobjetivo con capacidad limitada. Para los problemas multiobjetivo, no suele existir una única solución óptima, sino un conjunto de soluciones eficientes de Pareto. Las características del problema hacen inviable su resolución de forma exacta, por lo que se aplican distintas estrategias metaheurísticas para obtener una buena aproximación. En particular, se combinan las técnicas de GRASP, Path Relinking y Variable Neighborhood Search, que son adaptadas a la perspectiva multicriterio. Se trata de una aproximación en dos fases: una primera aproximación de la frontera eficiente se genera mediante un GRASP multiobjetivo. Tres son los métodos propuestos para la primera aproximación, dos de ellos derivados de la publicación de Martí et al. (2015) y el último se apoya en la función escalarizada de logro de Wierzbicki (Wierzbicki, 1980) para distintas combinaciones de pesos. A continuación, esta aproximación es mejorada con una versión de Path Relinking o Variable Neighborhood Search, con un punto de referencia diseñado para problemas multiobjetivo. Una vez generada la aproximación de la frontera eficiente, el proceso de obtención de la solución que más se adecúa a las preferencias de los gestores se basa en el desarrollo de un método interactivo sin trade – off, derivado de la filosofía NAUTILUS (Miettinen et al. 2010). Para evitar gastos de cómputo extensos, esta metodología se apoya en una pre - computación de los elementos de la frontera eficiente
