Using Functional Programming to recognize Named Structure in an Optimization Problem: Application to Pooling
Branch-and-cut optimization solvers typically apply generic algorithms, e.g., cutting planes or primal heuristics, to expedite performance for many mathematical optimization problems. But solver software receives an input optimization problem as vectors of equations and constraints containing no structural information. This article proposes automatically detecting named special structure using the pattern matching features of functional programming. Specifically, we deduce the industrially-relevant nonconvex nonlinear Pooling Problem within a mixed-integer nonlinear optimization problem and show that we can uncover pooling structure in optimization problems which are not pooling problems. Previous work has shown that preprocessing heuristics can find network structures; we show that we can additionally detect nonlinear pooling patterns. Finding named structures allows us to apply, to generic optimization problems, cutting planes or primal heuristics developed for the named structure. To demonstrate the recognition algorithm, we use the recognized structure to apply primal heuristics to a test set of standard pooling problems
A New Dantzig-Wolfe Reformulation And Branch-And-Price Algorithm For The Capacitated Lot Sizing Problem With Set Up Times
The textbook Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition for the Capacitated LotSizing Problem (CLSP),as already proposed by Manne in 1958, has animportant structural deficiency. Imposingintegrality constraints onthe variables in the full blown master will not necessarily givetheoptimal IP solution as only production plans which satisfy theWagner-Whitin condition canbe selected. It is well known that theoptimal solution to a capacitated lot sizing problem willnotnecessarily have this Wagner-Whitin property. The columns of thetraditionaldecomposition model include both the integer set up andcontinuous production quantitydecisions. Choosing a specific set upschedule implies also taking the associated Wagner-Whitin productionquantities. We propose the correct Dantzig-Wolfedecompositionreformulation separating the set up and productiondecisions. This formulation gives the samelower bound as Manne'sreformulation and allows for branch-and-price. We use theCapacitatedLot Sizing Problem with Set Up Times to illustrate our approach.Computationalexperiments are presented on data sets available from theliterature. Column generation isspeeded up by a combination of simplexand subgradient optimization for finding the dualprices. The resultsshow that branch-and-price is computationally tractable andcompetitivewith other approaches. Meta-heuristic algorithms in car engine design: a literature survey
Meta-heuristic algorithms are often inspired by natural phenomena, including the evolution of species in Darwinian natural selection theory, ant behaviors in biology, flock behaviors of some birds, and annealing in metallurgy. Due to their great potential in solving difficult optimization problems, meta-heuristic algorithms have found their way into automobile engine design. There are different optimization problems arising in different areas of car engine management including calibration, control system, fault diagnosis, and modeling. In this paper we review the state-of-the-art applications of different meta-heuristic algorithms in engine management systems. The review covers a wide range of research, including the application of meta-heuristic algorithms in engine calibration, optimizing engine control systems, engine fault diagnosis, and optimizing different parts of engines and modeling. The meta-heuristic algorithms reviewed in this paper include evolutionary algorithms, evolution strategy, evolutionary programming, genetic programming, differential evolution, estimation of distribution algorithm, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, memetic algorithms, and artificial immune system
Optimal Routing of Energy-aware Vehicles in Networks with Inhomogeneous Charging Nodes
We study the routing problem for vehicles with limited energy through a
network of inhomogeneous charging nodes. This is substantially more complicated
than the homogeneous node case studied in [1]. We seek to minimize the total
elapsed time for vehicles to reach their destinations considering both
traveling and recharging times at nodes when the vehicles do not have adequate
energy for the entire journey. We study two versions of the problem. In the
single vehicle routing problem, we formulate a mixed-integer nonlinear
programming (MINLP) problem and show that it can be reduced to a lower
dimensionality problem by exploiting properties of an optimal solution. We also
obtain a Linear Programming (LP) formulation allowing us to decompose it into
two simpler problems yielding near-optimal solutions. For a multi-vehicle
problem, where traffic congestion effects are included, we use a similar
approach by grouping vehicles into "subflows". We also provide an alternative
flow optimization formulation leading to a computationally simpler problem
solution with minimal loss in accuracy. Numerical results are included to
