Method of functional parametrization for solving a semi-periodic initial problem for fourth-order partial differential equations

    Get PDF
A semi-periodic initial boundary-value problem for a fourth-order system of partial differential equations is considered. Using the method of functional parametrization, an additional parameter is carried out and the studied problem is reduced to the equivalent semi-periodic problem for a system of integro-differential equations of hyperbolic type second order with functional parameters and integral relations. An interrelation between the semi-periodic problem for the system of integro-differential equations of hyperbolic type and a family of Cauchy problems for a system of ordinary differential equations is established. Algorithms for finding of solutions to an equivalent problem are constructed and their convergence is proved. Sufficient conditions of a unique solvability to the semi-periodic initial boundary value problem for the fourth order system of partial differential equations are obtained

The sign of the Green function of an n-th order linear boundary value problem

[EN] This paper provides results on the sign of the Green function (and its partial derivatives) of ann-th order boundary value problem subject to a wide set of homogeneous two-point boundary conditions. The dependence of the absolute value of the Green function and some of its partial derivatives with respect to the extremes where the boundary conditions are set is also assessed. This work has been supported by the Spanish Ministerio de Economia, Industria y Competitividad (MINECO), the Agencia Estatal de Investigacion (AEI) and Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER UE) grant MTM2017-89664-P.Almenar, P.; Jódar Sánchez, LA. Moving boundary approximation for curved streamer ionization fronts: Solvability analysis

    Get PDF
The minimal density model for negative streamer ionization fronts is investigated. An earlier moving boundary approximation for this model consisted of a "kinetic undercooling" type boundary condition in a Laplacian growth problem of Hele-Shaw type. Here we derive a curvature correction to the moving boundary approximation that resembles surface tension. The calculation is based on solvability analysis with unconventional features, namely, there are three relevant zero modes of the adjoint operator, one of them diverging; furthermore, the inner/outer matching ahead of the front has to be performed on a line rather than on an extended region; and the whole calculation can be performed analytically. The analysis reveals a relation between the fields ahead and behind a slowly evolving curved front, the curvature and the generated conductivity. This relation forces us to give up the ideal conductivity approximation, and we suggest to replace it by a constant conductivity approximation. This implies that the electric potential in the streamer interior is no longer constant but solves a Laplace equation; this leads to a Muskat-type problem.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figure

Preventing blow up by convective terms in dissipative PDEs

We study the impact of the convective terms on the global solvability or finite time blow up of solutions of dissipative PDEs. We consider the model examples of 1D Burger's type equations, convective Cahn-Hilliard equation, generalized Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation and KdV type equations, we establish the following common scenario: adding sufficiently strong (in comparison with the destabilizing nonlinearity) convective terms to equation prevents the solutions from blowing up in finite time and makes the considered system globally well-posed and dissipative and for weak enough convective terms the finite time blow up may occur similarly to the case when the equation does not involve convective term. This kind of result has been previously known for the case of Burger's type equations and has been strongly based on maximum principle. In contrast to this, our results are based on the weighted energy estimates which do not require the maximum principle for the considered problem

On the Volterra property of a boundary problem with integral gluing condition for mixed parabolic-hyperbolic equation

In the present work we consider a boundary value problem with gluing conditions of integral form for parabolic-hyperbolic type equation. We prove that the considered problem has the Volterra property. The main tools used in the work are related to the method of the integral equations and functional analysis.Comment: 18 page

Solvability of the Dirichlet, Neumann and the regularity problems for parabolic equations with H\"older continuous coefficients

We establish the L2L^2-solvability of Dirichlet, Neumann and regularity problems for divergence-form heat (or diffusion) equations with H\"older-continuous diffusion coefficients, on bounded Lipschitz domains in Rn\mathbb{R}^n. This is achieved through the demonstration of invertibility of the relevant layer-potentials which is in turn based on Fredholm theory and a new systematic approach which yields suitable parabolic Rellich-type estimates
