A short summary of different approaches to the parton energy loss problem is given. A particular attention is paid to the differences between various models. A possible solution to the problem of distinguishing competing approaches is discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures - To appear in the conference proceedings for Quark Matter 2009, March 30 - April 4, Knoxville, Tennesse

Natural Mass Generation for the Sterile Neutrino

We point out that there is a serious cosmological problem in the supersymmetric standard model if a sterile neutrino is responsible for the solar neutrino oscillation, and propose a possible solution to this problem. We show that our solution induces naturally a mass of order 10^{-4} eV for the sterile neutrino, which is deeply related to the mechanism of supersymmetry breaking.Comment: 8 pages, no figures, minor changes, reference adde

The degree of an eight-dimensional real quadratic division algebra is 1, 3, or 5

A celebrated theorem of Hopf, Bott, Milnor, and Kervaire states that every finite-dimensional real division algebra has dimension 1, 2, 4, or 8. While the real division algebras of dimension 1 or 2 and the real quadratic division algebras of dimension 4 have been classified, the problem of classifying all 8-dimensional real quadratic division algebras is still open. We contribute to a solution of that problem by proving that every 8-dimensional real quadratic division algebra has degree 1, 3, or 5. This statement is sharp.Comment: 8 page
