    Reliability measurement during software development

    Get PDF
During the development of data base software for a multi-sensor tracking system, reliability was measured. The failure ratio and failure rate were found to be consistent measures. Trend lines were established from these measurements that provided good visualization of the progress on the job as a whole as well as on individual modules. Over one-half of the observed failures were due to factors associated with the individual run submission rather than with the code proper. Possible application of these findings for line management, project managers, functional management, and regulatory agencies is discussed. Steps for simplifying the measurement process and for use of these data in predicting operational software reliability are outlined

Measurement, estimation, and prediction of software reliability

Quantitative indices of software reliability are defined, and application of three important indices is indicated: (1) reliability measurement, (2) reliability estimation, and (3) reliability prediction. State of the art techniques for each of these procedures are presented together with considerations of data acquisition. Failure classifications and other documentation for comprehensive software reliability evaluation are described

The focus of the research study is set on analyzes of the reliability of software application, aiming to determine the ways of measurement and determine the parameters of a reliable software application through the case study realized. Measurements of software reliability are important because it can be used to plan and control resources while implementing the software application and offer reliability regarding the correctness of the developed software. Throughout the study we elaborate the analyses of different problems that are encountered in order to maintain a higher level of reliable software application, especially the systems that are more complex and the process of their implementation depends on sensitive data. Furthermore we elaborate ways of detailed analysis and studies in achieving the reliability of software application and researches on the assessment of reliability of the software, and the measurement of the level of the failures in order to realize the level of reliability of a software application

Using a Combination of Measurement Tools to Extract Metrics from Open Source Projects

Software measurement can play a major role in ensuring the quality and reliability of software products. The measurement activities require appropriate tools to collect relevant metric data. Currently, there are several such tools available for software measurement. The main objective of this paper is to provide some guidelines in using a combination of multiple measurement tools especially for products built using object-oriented techniques and languages. In this paper, we highlight three tools for collecting metric data, in our case from several Java-based open source projects. Our research is currently based on the work of Card and Glass, who argue that design complexity measures (data complexity and structural complexity) are indicators/predictors of procedural/cyclomatic complexity (decision counts) and errors (discovered from system tests). Their work was centered on structured design and our work is with object-oriented designs and the metrics we use parallel those of Card and Glass, being, Henry and Kafura's Information Flow Metrics, McCabe's Cyclomatic Complexity, and Chidamber and Kemerer Object-oriented Metrics

An approach to software reliability prediction and quality control

December 5-7, 1972, Fall Joint Computer ConferenceThe increase in importance of software in command and control and other complex systems has not been accompanied by commensurate progress in the develop- ment of analytical techniques for the measurement of software quality and the prediction of software reliability. This paper presents a rationale for imple- menting software reliability programs; defines software reliability; and describes some of the problems of performing software reliability analysis. A software reliability program is outlined and a methodology for reliability prediction and quality control is presented. The results of initial efforts to develop a software reliability methodology at the Naval Electronics Laboratory Center are reported

This research aims to produce software the Information System of New Student Acceptance Web Based by PHP and SQL that is able to manage the implementation of New Student Acceptance that is registration, selection, journalizing, announcement, and re-registration. This research also determined the level of proprietary software that has been made. Type of this research is Research and Development. The method of software development is using Waterfall Model. Software testing is done through whitebox and black-box testing, and alpha and beta testing by experts and users. Instruments using the Quality Factor McCall as indicator to determine the level of proprietary software with measurement scales using Likert Scale. Instrument testing is done through validity and reliability test. The techniques of data collection is using interviews and questionnaires. Analysis is using quantitative descriptive analysis. The results of this research showed that the Information System of New Student Acceptance Web Based by PHP and SQL is able to manage the implementation of New Student Acceptance that is registration, selection, journalizing, announcement, and re-registration. The assessment by experts indicates that this software is very worthy in terms of correctness and reliability, while in terms of integrity and usability is worthy. The assessment by teachers indicates that this software is very worthy in terms of correctness, reliability, and integrity, while in terms of usability is worthy. The assessment by students indicates that this software is worthy in terms of correctness and usability, in terms of reliability is very worthy, and in terms of integrity is worthy enough. Reliability measurement for operational avionics software

    Get PDF
Quantitative measures of reliability for operational software in embedded avionics computer systems are presented. Analysis is carried out on data collected during flight testing and from both static and dynamic simulation testing. Failure rate is found to be a useful statistic for estimating software quality and recognizing reliability trends during the operational phase of software development

APPROACH FOR ENHANCING THE RELIABILITY OF SOFTWARE

Reliability is always important in all systems but sometimes it is more important than other quality attributes, especially inmission critical systems where the severity of consequence resulting from failure is very high. Software reliabilityengineering is focused on comprehensive techniques for developing reliable software and for proper assessment andimprovement of reliability. Reliability metrics, models and measurements form an essential part of software reliabilityengineering process. Appropriate metrics, models and measurement techniques should be applied to produce reliablesoftware. Hence, it is the intention to develop some approaches to enhance the reliability of software by the analysis of thestructure of the software, execution scenario for various inputs and operational profile. Keywords: Software Reliability, Rate of occurrence of failure (ROCOF), Mean Time to Failure (MTTF),Hardware Reliability, Mean Time between Failure (MTBR)
