Low power techniques for video compression
This paper gives an overview of low-power techniques proposed in the literature for mobile multimedia and Internet applications. Exploitable aspects are discussed in the behavior of different video compression tools. These power-efficient solutions are then classified by synthesis domain and level of abstraction. As this paper is meant to be a starting point for further research in the area, a lowpower hardware & software co-design methodology is outlined in the end as a possible scenario for video-codec-on-a-chip implementations on future mobile multimedia platforms
Shoe-box orbit determination system for SMM preliminary results
The implementation of both sequential and batch methods of estimation on IMP-16 microprocessors was investigated. Simulated data was used from a tracking and data relay satellite whose target satellite was the Solar Maximum Mission. An interesting feature of the hardware was the use of two interconnected IMP-16's. Some preliminary results from the study, as well as the difficulties and advantages in the use of microprocessors, are presented
FPGA Implementation of Spectral Subtraction for In-Car Speech Enhancement and Recognition
The use of speech recognition in noisy environments requires the use of speech enhancement algorithms in order to improve recognition performance. Deploying these enhancement techniques requires significant engineering to ensure algorithms are realisable in electronic hardware. This paper describes the design decisions and process to port the popular spectral subtraction algorithm to a Virtex-4 field-programmable gate array (FPGA) device. Resource analysis shows the final design uses only 13% of the total available FPGA resources. Waveforms and spectrograms presented support the validity of the proposed FPGA design
Specifications and programs for computer software validation
Three software products developed during the study are reported and include: (1) FORTRAN Automatic Code Evaluation System, (2) the Specification Language System, and (3) the Array Index Validation System
Techniques for the realization of ultrareliable spaceborne computers Interim scientific report
Error-free ultrareliable spaceborne computer
Spacelab data analysis and interactive control study
The study consisted of two main tasks, a series of interviews of Spacelab users and a survey of data processing and display equipment. Findings from the user interviews on questions of interactive control, downlink data formats, and Spacelab computer software development are presented. Equipment for quick look processing and display of scientific data in the Spacelab Payload Operations Control Center (POCC) was surveyed. Results of this survey effort are discussed in detail, along with recommendations for NASA development of several specific display systems which meet common requirements of many Spacelab experiments
