    Mathematical Modeling of Software Bug Complexity

    During testing of software, most of the bugs lying dormant in the software gets uncovered once the test cases are executed. Different bugs may take different amounts of effort and expertise for their removal. To understand the complexity of bugs from a developer‟s perspective, researchers have developed different mathematical models. Software consists of two types of bugs, dependent and independent. Dependent bugs are those whose removal depends upon the removal of some other bugs on which it is dependent. Dependency of bugs also makes the bug complex and bugs will take more time during fixing. Different debugging time lags functions have been taken to model different complexity of bugs. The aim of this paper is to study the bugs of different complexity. The complexity of bugs has been also modeled using dependency concept. Testing effort dependent bug complexity model using fault dependency has been also discussed. We also feel that that more complex bug will take more time and less complex bug will take less time during fixing. During removal of bugs, the removal team gets more familiar with the code during the fixing. The learning effect during testing has been incorporated using logistic removal rate. The models are validated based on different comparison criteria namely MSE, R2 , Bias, Variation and Root mean squared error.Keywords/Index Terms: Non-homogeneous Poisson process, bug complexity, bugs types

    Immune System Based Control and Intelligent Agent Design for Power System Applications

    The National Academy of Engineering has selected the US Electric Power Grid as the supreme engineering achievement of the 20th century. Yet, this same grid is struggling to keep up with the increasing demand for electricity, its quality and cost. A growing recognition of the need to modernize the grid to meet future challenges has found articulation in the vision of a Smart Grid in using new control strategies that are intelligent, distributed, and adaptive. The objective of this work is to develop smart control systems inspired from the biological Human Immune System to better manage the power grid at the both generation and distribution levels. The work is divided into three main sections. In the first section, we addressed the problem of Automatic Generation Control design. The Clonal Selection theory is successfully applied as an optimization technique to obtain decentralized control gains that minimize a performance index based on Area Control Errors. Then the Immune Network theory is used to design adaptive controllers in order to diminish the excess maneuvering of the units and help the control areas comply with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation\u27s standards set to insure good quality of service and equitable mutual assistance by the interconnected energy balancing areas. The second section of this work addresses the design and deployment of Multi Agent Systems on both terrestrial and shipboard power systems self-healing using a novel approach based on the Immune Multi-Agent System (IMAS). The Immune System is viewed as a highly organized and distributed Multi-Cell System that strives to heal the body by working together and communicating to get rid of the pathogens. In this work both simulation and hardware design and deployment of the MAS are addressed. The third section of this work consists in developing a small scale smart circuit by modifying and upgrading the existing Analog Power Simulator to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed technologies. We showed how to develop smart Agents hardware along with a wireless communication platform and the electronic switches. After putting together the different designed pieces, the resulting Multi Agent System is integrated into the Power Simulator Hardware. The multi Agent System developed is tested for fault isolation, reconfiguration, and restoration problems by simulating a permanent three phase fault on one of the feeder lines. The experimental results show that the Multi Agent System hardware developed performed effectively and in a timely manner which confirms that this technology is very promising and a very good candidate for Smart Grid control applications

    On the Viability of Quantitative Assessment Methods in Software Engineering and Software Services

    IT help desk operations are expensive. Costs associated with IT operations present challenges to profit goals. Help desk managers need a way to plan staffing levels so that labor costs are minimized while problems are resolved efficiently. An incident prediction method is needed for planning staffing levels. The potential value of a solution to this problem is important to an IT service provider since software failures are inevitable and their timing is difficult to predict. In this research, a cost model for help desk operations is developed. The cost model relates predicted incidents to labor costs using real help desk data. Incidents are predicted using software reliability growth models. Cluster analysis is used to group products with similar help desk incident characteristics. Principal Components Analysis is used to determine one product per cluster for the prediction of incidents for all members of the cluster. Incident prediction accuracy is demonstrated using cluster representatives, and is done so successfully for all clusters with accuracy comparable to making predictions for each product in the portfolio. Linear regression is used with cost data for the resolution of incidents to relate incident predictions to help desk labor costs. Following a series of four pilot studies, the cost model is validated by successfully demonstrating cost prediction accuracy for one month prediction intervals over a 22 month period

    Advanced flight control system study

The basic criteria are functional reliability of 10 to the minus 10 power/hour of flight and only 6 month scheduled maintenance.
