    On Modeling and Analyzing Cost Factors in Information Systems Engineering

    Introducing enterprise information systems (EIS) is usually associated with high costs. It is therefore crucial to understand those factors that determine or influence these costs. Though software cost estimation has received considerable attention during the last decades, it is difficult to apply existing approaches to EIS. This difficulty particularly stems from the inability of these methods to deal with the dynamic interactions of the many technological, organizational and projectdriven cost factors which specifically arise in the context of EIS. Picking up this problem, we introduce the EcoPOST framework to investigate the complex cost structures of EIS engineering projects through qualitative cost evaluation models. This paper extends previously described concepts and introduces design rules and guidelines for cost evaluation models in order to enhance the development of meaningful and useful EcoPOST cost evaluation models. A case study illustrates the benefits of our approach. Most important, our EcoPOST framework is an important tool supporting EIS engineers in gaining a better understanding of the critical factors determining the costs of EIS engineering projects

    Building a Common Ground – The Use of Design Representation Cards for Enhancing Collaboration between Industrial Designers and Engineering Designers

    To achieve success in today’s commercial environment, manufacturers have progressively adopted collaboration strategies. Industrial design has been increasingly used with engineering design to enhance competitiveness. Research between the two fields has been limited and existing collaboration methods have not achieved desired results. This PhD research project investigated the level of collaboration between industrial designers and engineering designers. The aim is to develop an integration tool for enhanced collaboration, where a common language would improve communication and create shared knowledge. An empirical research using questionnaires and observations identified 61 issues between industrial designers and engineering designers. The results were grouped and coded based on recurrence and importance, outlining 3 distinct problem categories in collaborative activity: conflicts in values and principles, differences in design representation, and education differences. A taxonomy further helped categorise design representations into sketches, drawings, models and prototypes. This knowledge was indexed into cards to provide uniform definition of design representations with key information. They should benefit practitioners and educators by serving as a decision-making guide and support a collaborative working environment. A pilot study first refined the layout and improved information access. The final validation involving interviews with practitioners revealed most respondents to be convinced that the tool would provide a common ground in design representations, contributing to enhanced collaboration. Additional interviews were sought from groups of final-year industrial design and engineering design students working together. Following their inter-disciplinary experience, nearly all respondents were certain that the cards would provide mutual understanding for greater product success. Lastly, a case study approach tested the cards in an industry-based project. A design diary captured and analysed the researchers’ activities and observations on a daily basis. It revealed positive feedback, reinforcing the benefits of the cards for successful collaboration in a multi-disciplinary environment.     Solar Air Conditioning with Metal Organic Frameworks

    Air conditioning is responsible for 5% of energy consumption in the United States as is increasingly in demand across the world as the global middle class continues to grow in size. During hotter months, electricity used to power cooling systems becomes taxing on electric grids, constituting approximately 40% of peak power demand. Traditional air conditioning (AC) systems are also associated with harmful environmental impacts. Both refrigerants used for cooling and fossil fuels used in power contribute to global warming by acting as green-house gases (GHG). Due to the negative effects associated with emissions, the ultimate goal of this research is to drastically reduce non-renewable energy consumption associated with AC units. Generations of technologies have been developed to address this ongoing issue. An emerging solution involves the integration of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) sorbents into a solar air conditioning system. Because of MOF properties, this integration allows for a thermally driven cycle without requiring a non-renewable energy input. This thesis is comprised of six chapters geared towards assisting in the determination of the most efficient and effective means of incorporation of MOFs into AC systems. Primarily by conducting an extensive literature review, the third chapter discusses Metal Organic Frameworks in depth for determining the most suitable candidates for this research project. Specific needs for the system are examined with different MOFs that meet the criteria considered. In chapter four, feasibility of integrating MOFs into a membrane through sorption measurements is tested for candidate MOF CAU-10. Chapter five is centered around modeling a MOF-assisted indirect evaporative cooler using EES: Engineering Equation Solver. Modeling outputs give a preliminary understanding of the cooling process and its effect on temperature. Together, these chapters move toward showing the feasibility of operation and its applicability to the field of renewable AC. The study of MOF attributes in Chapter 3 focused on Relative Humidity (RH) at which the MOFs demonstrated a steep water uptake, water adsorption capacity, temperatures for MOF regeneration, long term stability, and cost to synthesize and fabricate. These investigations showed Co2Cl2(BTDD), MIL-101, MIL-100(M), MOF-841, and CAU-10 to be the most promising applicants. Through sorption measurements of MOF material CAU-10 its isotherm demonstrated a capacity at the adsorption step below 0.30 gH2O/gMOF but a maximum capacity over 0.5 gH2O/gMOF. The EES model results showed 80-90% of recycled air provides a supply temperature necessary for indoor cooling below 21 oC.     Design Performance Measurement in the Construction Sector: A Pilot Study

    This paper examines the role and deployment of design performance measurements (DPMs) in the construction industry, focusing on the consulting engineering sector, the design 'heart' of construction. Compared with manufacturing, there has been very little research on the use of DPMs in construction, and firms often struggle to find appropriate performance indicators. Using results from structured questionnaires, the paper shows that the few DPMs which do exist focus mainly on cost. Other measures are needed to address quality, innovative performance and client satisfaction. In contrast to manufacturing, DPMs in construction also need to address the project-based, multi-firm and non-routine nature of construction design, as well as the separation of design from manufacturing, build and operation. Interviews and workshops with industrialists were used to identify recent DPM practices in construction and combine these with lessons from other sectors. The resulting DPM tools provide guidance on how to: (a) integrate design into wider business processes in construction; (b) identify key design indicators, at both project and firm level; and (c) use DPMs to provide a balanced scorecard for design performance.performance indicators, design integration, design indicators, construction industry

    Identifying the effects of Enterprise System implementation and use: Examples from Denmark

    This paper reports the results of an explorative study of six large Danish companies regarding the effects of ERP implementation and use. The study is part of a larger ERP study programme at the Aarhus School of Business. The data collection approach applied was based on interviews and management case writing. The main results show that the effects of ERP implementation and use are seldom fully predictable by management. The ERP system can be seen as an organisational actor in its own right as it to a large extent influences values, culture, behaviour, processes and procedures of other actors in the organisation. Given the complexity, size and organisational embeddedness of ERP systems, it can be said that the implementation project never ends and the ERP system becomes a significant variable in the future direction of the organisationNo keywords;

    The Value of ERP Curriculum Integration: Perspectives from the Research

    In the current economic conditions, many institutions face dwindling budgets and an increased focus on proving the value of the education provided. The effort and costs required to integrate Enterprise Resource Planning systems into course curricula are a significant investment of resources for any university. This paper examines the expense of Enterprise Resource Planning integrated curricula (ERP-ICs) and the documented benefits. Evidence is still needed to place a quantitative value on many of the benefits provided to students completing an ERP-IC and to the college and university making that investment. A review of research literature regarding Enterprise Resource Planning based curricula is summarized in relation to costs and benefits. Benefits documented with quantified research are specifically examined. Finally a discussion of important benefits and costs that have yet to be quantified is given. In this age, universities are examining the cost-benefits of each investment and research on ERP-ICs lacks the data to make this case. Additional research is suggested to enrich this field of research beyond the current case studies and curriculum models
