    Software defined mobile multicast

    Mobile multicast has been deployed in telecommunication networks for information dissemination applications such as IPTV and video conferencing. Recent studies of mobile multicast focused on fast handover protocols, and algorithms for multicast tree management have witnessed little improvement over the years. Shortest path trees represent the status quo of multicast topology in real-world systems. Steiner trees were investigated extensively in the theory community and are known to be bandwidth efficient, but come with an associated complexity. Recent developments in the Software Defined Networking (SDN) paradigm have shed light on implementing more sophisticated protocols for better routing performance. We propose an SDN-based design to combat the complexity vs. Performance dilemma in mobile multicast. We construct low-cost Steiner trees for multicastin a mobile network, employing an SDN controller for coordinating tree construction and morphing. Highlights of our design include a set of efficient online algorithms for tree adjustment when nodes arrive and depart on the fly, and an SDN rule update framework based on constraints expressed by boolean logic to ensure loop free rule updates. The algorithms are proven to achieve a constant competitive ratio against the offline optimal Steiner tree, with an amortized constant number of edge swaps per adjustment.     Multicast broadcast services support in OFDMA-based WiMAX systems [Advances in mobile multimedia]

    Multimedia stream service provided by broadband wireless networks has emerged as an important technology and has attracted much attention. An all-IP network architecture with reliable high-throughput air interface makes orthogonal frequency division multiplexing access (OFDMA)-based mobile worldwide interoperability for microwave access (mobile WiMAX) a viable technology for wireless multimedia services, such as voice over IP (VoIP), mobile TV, and so on. One of the main features in a WiMAX MAC layer is that it can provide'differentiated services among different traffic categories with individual QoS requirements. In this article, we first give an overview of the key aspects of WiMAX and describe multimedia broadcast multicast service (MBMS) architecture of the 3GPP. Then, we propose a multicast and broadcast service (MBS) architecture for WiMAX that is based on MBMS. Moreover, we enhance the MBS architecture for mobile WiMAX to overcome the shortcoming of limited video broadcast performance over the baseline MBS model. We also give examples to demonstrate that the proposed architecture can support better mobility and offer higher power efficiency

    Supporting service discovery, querying and interaction in ubiquitous computing environments.

    In this paper, we contend that ubiquitous computing environments will be highly heterogeneous, service rich domains. Moreover, future applications will consequently be required to interact with multiple, specialised service location and interaction protocols simultaneously. We argue that existing service discovery techniques do not provide sufficient support to address the challenges of building applications targeted to these emerging environments. This paper makes a number of contributions. Firstly, using a set of short ubiquitous computing scenarios we identify several key limitations of existing service discovery approaches that reduce their ability to support ubiquitous computing applications. Secondly, we present a detailed analysis of requirements for providing effective support in this domain. Thirdly, we provide the design of a simple extensible meta-service discovery architecture that uses database techniques to unify service discovery protocols and addresses several of our key requirements. Lastly, we examine the lessons learnt through the development of a prototype implementation of our architecture

    Real Coded Genetic Algorithm with Enhanced Abilities for Adaptation Applied to Optimisation of MIMO Systems

    This article presents an investigation of real coded Genetic Algorithm Blend Crossover Alpha modification, with enhanced ability for adaptation, applied to minimisation of transmit power in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems beamforming. The goal is to formulate transmit power minimisation task as a black box software object and evaluate an alternative to currently existing methods for optimisation of transmit energy in multicast system constrained by signal to noise ratio. The novelty of this adaptive methodology for determination of minimal power level within certain Quality of Service criteria is that it guarantees satisfaction of the constraint and 100% feasibility of achieved solutions. In addition this methodology excludes retuning algorithms parameters by using black box model for the problem definition. Experiments are conducted for identification of weight vectors assigned for signal strength and direction. Achieved experimental results are presented and analysed

    Active networks: an evolution of the internet

    Active Networks can be seen as an evolution of the classical model of packet-switched networks. The traditional and ”passive” network model is based on a static definition of the network node behaviour. Active Networks propose an “active” model where the intermediate nodes (switches and routers) can load and execute user code contained in the data units (packets). Active Networks are a programmable network model, where bandwidth and computation are both considered shared network resources. This approach opens up new interesting research fields. This paper gives a short introduction of Active Networks, discusses the advantages they introduce and presents the research advances in this field
