Recent Application in Biometrics
In the recent years, a number of recognition and authentication systems based on biometric measurements have been proposed. Algorithms and sensors have been developed to acquire and process many different biometric traits. Moreover, the biometric technology is being used in novel ways, with potential commercial and practical implications to our daily activities. The key objective of the book is to provide a collection of comprehensive references on some recent theoretical development as well as novel applications in biometrics. The topics covered in this book reflect well both aspects of development. They include biometric sample quality, privacy preserving and cancellable biometrics, contactless biometrics, novel and unconventional biometrics, and the technical challenges in implementing the technology in portable devices. The book consists of 15 chapters. It is divided into four sections, namely, biometric applications on mobile platforms, cancelable biometrics, biometric encryption, and other applications. OIL SPILL ALONG THE TURKISH STRAITS SEA AREA; ACCIDENTS, ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION, SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACTS AND PROTECTION
The Turkish Straits Sea Area (TSSA) is a long water passage that is consisted of the Sea of Marmara, an inland sea within Turkey's borders, and two narrow straits connected to neighboring seas. With a strategic location between the Balkans and Anatolia, the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, and dominated by the continental climate, the region hosted many civilizations throughout the centuries. This makes the region among the busiest routes in the world, with sea traffic three times higher than that in the Suez Canal. The
straits are the most difficult waterways to navigate and witnessed many hazardous and
important collisions and accidents throughout history. In addition, this area has vital roles as a biological corridor and barrier among three distinctive marine realms. Therefore, the region is rather sensitive to damages of national and international maritime activities, which may cause severe environmental problems.
This book addresses several key questions on a chapter basis, including historical accidents, background information on main dynamic restrictions, oil pollution, oil spill detection, and clean-up recoveries, its impacts on biological communities, socioeconomic aspects, and subjects with international agreements. This book will help readers, public, local and governmental authorities gain a deeper understanding of the status of the oil spill, mostly due to shipping accidents, and their related impacts along the TSSA, which needs precautionary measures to be protected.CONTENTS

Defect-induced local electronic structure modifications within the system SrO - SrTiO3 - TiO2: symmetry and disorder
Owing to their versatile orbital character with both local and highly dispersive degrees of freedom, transition metal oxides span the range of ionic, covalent and metallic bonding. They exhibit a vast diversity of electronic phenomena such as high dielectric, piezoelectric, pyroelectric, ferroelectric, magnetic, multiferroic, catalytic, redox, and superconductive properties. The nature of these properties arises from sensitive details in the electronic structure, e.g. orbital mixing and orbital hybridization, due to non-stoichiometry, atomic displacements, broken symmetries etc., and their coupling with external perturbations.
In the work presented here, these variations of the electronic structure of crystals due to structural and electronic defects have been investigated, exemplarily for the quasi-binary system SrO - SrTiO3 - TiO2. A number of binary and ternary structures have been studied, both experimentally as well as by means of electronic modeling. The applied methods comprise Resonant X-ray Scattering techniques like Diffraction Anomalous Fine Structure, Anisotropy of Anomalous Scattering and X-ray Absorption Fine Structure, and simultaneously extensive electronic calculations by means of Density Functional Theory and Finite Difference Method Near-Edge Structure to gain a thorough physical understanding of the underlying processes, interactions and dynamics.
It is analyzed in detail how compositional variations, e.g. manifesting as oxygen vacancies or ordered stacking faults, alter the short-range order and affect the electronic structure, and how the severe changes in mechanical, optical, electrical as well as electrochemical properties evolve. Various symmetry-property relations have been concluded and interpreted on the basis of these modifications in electronic structure for the orbital structure in rutile TiO2, for distorted TiO6 octahedra and related switching mechanisms of the Ti valence, for elasticity and resistivity in strontium titanate, and for surface relaxations in Ruddlesden-Popper phases.
Highlights of the thesis include in particular the methodical development regarding Resonant X-Ray Diffraction, such as the first use of partially forbidden reflections to get the complete phase information not only of the tensorial structure factor but of each individual atomic scattering tensor for a whole spectrum of energies, as well as the determination of orbital degrees of freedom and details of the partial local density of states from these tensors.
On the material side, the most prominent results are the identification of the migration-induced field-stabilized polar phase and the exergonic redox behavior in SrTiO3 caused by defect migration and defect separation
Storing, single photons in broadband vapor cell quantum memories
Single photons are an essential resource for realizing quantum technologies. Together with compatible quantum memories granting control over when a photon arrives, they form a foundational component both of quantum communication and quantum information processing. Quality solid-state single photon sources deliver on the high bandwidths and rates required for scalable quantum technology, but require memories that match these operational parameters. In this thesis, I report on quantum memories based on electromagnetically induced transparency and built in warm rubidium vapor, with such fast and high bandwidth interfaces in mind. I also present work on a heralded single photon source based on parametric downconversion in an optical cavity, operated in a bandwidth regime of a few 100s of megahertz. The systems are characterized on their own and together in a functional interface. As the photon generation process is spontaneous, the memory is implemented as a fully reactive device, capable of storing and retrieving photons in response to an asynchronous external trigger.
The combined system is used to demonstrate the storage and retrieval of single photons in and from the quantum memory. Using polarization selection rules in the Zeeman substructure of the atoms, the read-out noise of the memory is considerably reduced from what is common in ground-state storage schemes in warm vapor. Critically, the quantum signature in the photon number statistics of the retrieved photons is successfully maintained, proving that the emission from the memory is dominated by single photons. We observe a retrieved single-photon state accuracy of for short storage times, which remains throughout the memory lifetime of ns. The end-to-end efficiency of the memory interfaced with the photon source is , which will be further improved in the future by optimizing the operating regime. With its operation bandwidth of MHz, our system opens up new possibilities for single-photon synchronization and local quantum networking experiments at high repetition rates
Biometrics
Biometrics uses methods for unique recognition of humans based upon one or more intrinsic physical or behavioral traits. In computer science, particularly, biometrics is used as a form of identity access management and access control. It is also used to identify individuals in groups that are under surveillance. The book consists of 13 chapters, each focusing on a certain aspect of the problem. The book chapters are divided into three sections: physical biometrics, behavioral biometrics and medical biometrics. The key objective of the book is to provide comprehensive reference and text on human authentication and people identity verification from both physiological, behavioural and other points of view. It aims to publish new insights into current innovations in computer systems and technology for biometrics development and its applications. The book was reviewed by the editor Dr. Jucheng Yang, and many of the guest editors, such as Dr. Girija Chetty, Dr. Norman Poh, Dr. Loris Nanni, Dr. Jianjiang Feng, Dr. Dongsun Park, Dr. Sook Yoon and so on, who also made a significant contribution to the book
