Evolutionary Subject Tagging in the Humanities; Supporting Discovery and Examination in Digital Cultural Landscapes
In this paper, the authors attempt to identify problematic issues for subject tagging in the humanities, particularly those associated with information objects in digital formats. In the third major section, the authors identify a number of assumptions that lie behind the current practice of subject classification that we think should be challenged. We move then to propose features of classification systems that could increase their effectiveness. These emerged as recurrent themes in many of the conversations with scholars, consultants, and colleagues. Digital libraries for open science: Using a socio-technical interaction network approach
This paper argues that using Socio-Technical Interaction Networks to build on extensively-used Digital Library infrastructures for supporting Open Science knowledge environments. Using a more social -technical approach could lead to an evolutionary reconceptualization of Digital Libraries. Digital Libraries being used as knowledge environments, built upon on the document repositories, will also emphasize the importance of user interaction and collaboration in carrying out those activities. That is to say, the primary goal of Digital Libraries is to help users convert information into knowledge; therefore, Digital Libraries examined in light of socio-technical interaction networks have the potential to shift Digital Libraries from individual, isolated collections to more interoperable, interconnected knowledge-creating repositories that support an evolving relationship between open science users and the Digital Library environment
Open Knowledge Resources for Higher Education: Scholarly Publications, Course Materials, Academic Software
This paper will explain why electronic knowledge resources in academia cannot only be regarded as private commodities, but also as public goods. After sketching a concept of public goods for a postnational, global society, three types of electronic knowledge resources are distinguished: scholarly publications, course materials and academic software. With the help of practical examples, similarities between these resources are developed. Finally, it will be explained what advantages the status of public good for knowledge resources would have and how it could be achieved by the academic community

Learning from Digital Natives: Bridging Formal and Informal Learning. Final Report
Overview
This report suggests that students are increasingly making use of a variety of etools (such as mobile phones, email, MSN, digital cameras, games consoles and social networking sites) to support their informal learning within formalised educational settings, and that they use the tools that they have available if none are provided for them. Therefore, higher education institutions should encourage the use of these tools.
Aims and background
This study aimed to explore how e-tools (such as mobile phones, email, MSN, digital cameras, games consoles and social networking sites) and the processes that underpin their use can support learning within educational institutions and help improve the quality of studentsâ experiences of learning in higher education (pgs 9-11).
Methodology
The study entailed: (i) desk research to identify related international research and practice and examples of integration of e-tools and learning processes in formal educational settings; (ii) a survey of 160 engineering and social work students across two contrasting Scottish universities (pre- and post-1992) â the University of Strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian University â and follow-up interviews with eight students across the two subject areas to explore which technologies students were using for both learning and leisure activities within and outside the formal educational settings and how they would like to use such technologies to support their learning in both formal and informal settings; and (iii) interviews with eight members of staff from across the institutions and two subject areas to identify their perceptions of the educational value of the e-tools. Key findings
⢠Students reported making extensive use of a variety of both e-tools (such as mobile phones, email, MSN, digital cameras) and social networking tools (such as Bebo, MySpace, Wikipedia and YouTube) for informal socialisation, communication, information gathering, content creation and sharing, alongside using the institutionally provided technologies and learning environments.
⢠Most of the students owned their own computer or had access to a sibling or parentâs computer. Many students owned a laptop but preferred not to bring it onto campus due to security concerns and because they found it too heavy to carry about.
⢠Ownership of mobile phones was ubiquitous.
⢠Whilst the studentsâ information searching literacy seemed adequate, the ability of these students to harness the power of social networking tools and informal processes for their learning was low.
Staff reported using a few Web 2.0 and social software tools but they were generally less familiar with how these could be used to support learning and teaching. There were misconceptions surrounding the affordances of the tools and fears expressed about security and invasion of personal space. Considerations of the costs and the time it would take staff to develop their skills meant that there was a reluctance to take up new technologies at an institutional level.
⢠Subject differences emerged in both staff and student perceptions as to which type of tools they would find most useful. Attitudes to Web 2.0 tools were different. Engineers were concerned with reliability, using institutional systems and inter-operability. Social workers were more flexible because they were focused on communication and professional needs.
⢠The study concluded that digital tools, personal devices, social networking software and many of the other tools explored all have a large educational potential to support learning processing and teaching practices. Therefore, use of these tools and processes within institutions, amongst staff and students should be encouraged.
⢠The report goes on to suggest ways in which the use of such technologies can help strengthen the links between informal and formal learning in higher education. The recommendations are grouped under four areas â pedagogical, socio-cultural, organisational and technological
Bots, Seeds and People: Web Archives as Infrastructure
The field of web archiving provides a unique mix of human and automated
agents collaborating to achieve the preservation of the web. Centuries old
theories of archival appraisal are being transplanted into the sociotechnical
environment of the World Wide Web with varying degrees of success. The work of
the archivist and bots in contact with the material of the web present a
distinctive and understudied CSCW shaped problem. To investigate this space we
conducted semi-structured interviews with archivists and technologists who were
directly involved in the selection of content from the web for archives. These
semi-structured interviews identified thematic areas that inform the appraisal
process in web archives, some of which are encoded in heuristics and
algorithms. Making the infrastructure of web archives legible to the archivist,
the automated agents and the future researcher is presented as a challenge to
the CSCW and archival community
On the periphery? Understanding low and discontinued internet use amongst young people in Britain
In the UK, the Internet has become an important feature of the lives of the majority of young people. However, there is a significant minority of young people who are not able to navigate or connect properly with the online world. They are, in other words, outside the digital mainstream. Evidence for this group has been found in nationally representative surveys, where around 10% of young people (aged 17â23) define themselves as lapsed Internet users. That is, they used to use the Internet but no longer do so (OxIS, 2011). This study aims to find out more about this group.
Specifically we aim to:
Examine why young people are outside the digital mainstream, and determine the extent to which this is due to reasons of exclusion or choice.
Explore the implications this has in their daily lives.
Consider how the experiences of these young people can inform the digital inclusion strategy in the UK.
This nine month qualitative study investigated these objectives in four overlapping steps: a literature review of academic research and policy documents; analysis of the Oxford Internet Survey (2011) and the Learner and their Context Survey (2009), which contain valuable information on lapsed Internet users; 36 inâdepth interviews with young people who consider themselves to be infrequent or lapsed Internet users; and a workshop with key experts in the field
