Open education: common(s), commonism and the new common wealth
Open Education, and specifically the Open Education Resources movement, seeks to provide universal access to knowledge, undermining the historical enclosure and increasing privatisation of the public education system. An important aspect of this movement is a reinvigoration of the concept of âthe commonsâ. The paper examines this aspiration by submitting the implicit theoretical assumptions of Open Education and the underlying notion of âthe commonsâ to the test of critical political economy. The paper acknowledges the radical possibility of the idea of âthe commonsâ, but argues that its radical potentiality can be undermined by a preoccupation with âthe freedom of things rather than with the freedom of labourâ. The paper presents an interpretation of âthe commonsâ based on the concept of âliving knowledgeâ and âautonomous institutionalityâ (Roggero, 2011), and offers the Social Science Centre in the UK, as an example of an âinstitution of the commonâ1. The paper concludes by arguing the most radical revision of the concept of âthe commonâ involves a fundamental reappraisal of what constitutes social or common wealth
A Relational Event Approach to Modeling Behavioral Dynamics
This chapter provides an introduction to the analysis of relational event
data (i.e., actions, interactions, or other events involving multiple actors
that occur over time) within the R/statnet platform. We begin by reviewing the
basics of relational event modeling, with an emphasis on models with piecewise
constant hazards. We then discuss estimation for dyadic and more general
relational event models using the relevent package, with an emphasis on
hands-on applications of the methods and interpretation of results. Statnet is
a collection of packages for the R statistical computing system that supports
the representation, manipulation, visualization, modeling, simulation, and
analysis of relational data. Statnet packages are contributed by a team of
volunteer developers, and are made freely available under the GNU Public
License. These packages are written for the R statistical computing
environment, and can be used with any computing platform that supports R
(including Windows, Linux, and Mac).
A market based approach for resolving resource constrained task allocation problems in a software development process
We consider software development as an economic activity, where goods and services can be modeled as a resource constrained task allocation problem. This paper introduces a market based mechanism to overcome task allocation issues in a software development process. It proposes a mechanism with a prescribed set of rules, where valuation is based on the behaviors of stakeholders such as biding for a task. A bid process ensures that a stakeholder, who values the resource most, will have it allocated for a limited number of times. To observe the bidders behaviors, we initiate an approach incorporated with a process simulation model. Our preliminary results support the idea that our model is useful for optimizing the value based task allocations, creating a market value for the project assets, and for achieving proper allocation of project resources specifically on large scale software projects
GraphCombEx: A Software Tool for Exploration of Combinatorial Optimisation Properties of Large Graphs
We present a prototype of a software tool for exploration of multiple
combinatorial optimisation problems in large real-world and synthetic complex
networks. Our tool, called GraphCombEx (an acronym of Graph Combinatorial
Explorer), provides a unified framework for scalable computation and
presentation of high-quality suboptimal solutions and bounds for a number of
widely studied combinatorial optimisation problems. Efficient representation
and applicability to large-scale graphs and complex networks are particularly
considered in its design. The problems currently supported include maximum
clique, graph colouring, maximum independent set, minimum vertex clique
covering, minimum dominating set, as well as the longest simple cycle problem.
Suboptimal solutions and intervals for optimal objective values are estimated
using scalable heuristics. The tool is designed with extensibility in mind,
with the view of further problems and both new fast and high-performance
heuristics to be added in the future. GraphCombEx has already been successfully
used as a support tool in a number of recent research studies using
combinatorial optimisation to analyse complex networks, indicating its promise
as a research software tool
Online Store Locator: An Essential Resource for Retailers in the 21st Century
Most retailers use their websites and social media to increase their visibility, while potential customers get information about these retailers using the Internet on electronic devices. Many papers have previously studied online marketing strategies used by retailers, but little attention has been paid to determine how these companies provide information through the Internet about the location and characteristics of their stores. This paper aims to obtain evidence about the inclusion of interactive web maps on retailersâ websites to provide information about the location of their stores. With this purpose, the store locator interactive tools of specialty retailersâ websites included in the report âGlobal Powers of Retailing 2015â are studied in detail using different procedures, such as frequency analysis and word clouds. From the results obtained, it was concluded that most of these firms use interactive maps to provide information about their offline stores, but today some of them still use non-interactive (static) maps or text format to present this information. Moreover, some differences were observed among the search filters used in the store locator services, according to the retailerâs specialty. These results provided insight into the important role of online store locator tools on retailersâ websites
