    A Hybrid Recommender Strategy on an Expanded Content Manager in Formal Learning

    The main topic of this paper is to find ways to improve learning in a formal Higher Education Area. In this environment, the teacher publishes or suggests contents that support learners in a given course, as supplement of classroom training. Generally, these materials are pre-stored and not changeable. These contents are typically published in learning management systems (the Moodle platform emerges as one of the main choices) or in sites created and maintained on the web by teachers themselves. These scenarios typically include a specific group of students (class) and a given period of time (semester or school year). Contents reutilization often needs replication and its update requires new edition and new submission by teachers. Normally, these systems do not allow learners to add new materials, or to edit existing ones. The paper presents our motivations, and some related concepts and works. We describe the concepts of sequencing and navigation in adaptive learning systems, followed by a short presentation of some of these systems. We then discuss the effects of social interaction on the learners’ choices. Finally, we refer some more related recommender systems and their applicability in supporting learning. One central idea from our proposal is that we believe that students with the same goals and with similar formal study time can benefit from contents' assessments made by learners that already have completed the same courses and have studied the same contents. We present a model for personalized recommendation of learning activities to learners in a formal learning context that considers two systems. In the extended content management system, learners can add new materials, select materials from teachers and from other learners, evaluate and define the time spent studying them. Based on learner profiles and a hybrid recommendation strategy, combining conditional and collaborative filtering, our second system will predict learning activities scores and offers adaptive and suitable sequencing learning contents to learners. We propose that similarities between learners can be based on their evaluation interests and their recent learning history. The recommender support subsystem aims to assist learners at each step suggesting one suitable ordered list of LOs, by decreasing order of relevance. The proposed model has been implemented in the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS), and we present the system’s architecture and design. We will evaluate it in a real higher education formal course and we intend to present experimental results in the near future

    The other side of the social web: A taxonomy for social information access

    The power of the modern Web, which is frequently called the Social Web or Web 2.0, is frequently traced to the power of users as contributors of various kinds of contents through Wikis, blogs, and resource sharing sites. However, the community power impacts not only the production of Web content, but also the access to all kinds of Web content. A number of research groups worldwide explore what we call social information access techniques that help users get to the right information using "collective wisdom" distilled from actions of those who worked with this information earlier. This invited talk offers a brief introduction into this important research stream and reviews recent works on social information access performed at the University of Pittsburgh's PAWS Lab lead by the author.     Infrastructure networks and the competitiveness of the economy

    This paper aims to examine how technical infrastructure networks may contribute to improving the competitiveness of the Hungarian economy. Consequently, our main question will be to establish how certain networks or sectors can promote competitiveness of the entire economy rather than how they could be more competitive in their own field. In the macroeconomic or regional sense competitiveness is interpreted as the entirety of safeguards and preconditions that provide a long term basis for success in a competitive market environment. The review of the economic, social, institutional and facility preconditions of competitiveness has highlighted that practically every component must be backed by a good system of relations: both strong, balanced internal relations promoting co-operation and external relations to assure outward linkages. Despite the above correlation, it would be a fallacy to assume that infrastructure networks as linking elements in general are factors per se improving competitiveness. In accordance with the level of development of the economy, the key forms of activity and the realistically attainable objectives, different linkages and service needs become key for the development of the economy in different stages

    Recommendation, collaboration and social search

    This chapter considers the social component of interactive information retrieval: what is the role of other people in searching and browsing? For simplicity we begin by considering situations without computers. After all, you can interactively retrieve information without a computer; you just have to interact with someone or something else. Such an analysis can then help us think about the new forms of collaborative interactions that extend our conceptions of information search, made possible by the growth of networked ubiquitous computing technology. Information searching and browsing have often been conceptualized as a solitary activity, however they always have a social component. We may talk about 'the' searcher or 'the' user of a database or information resource. Our focus may be on individual uses and our research may look at individual users. Our experiments may be designed to observe the behaviors of individual subjects. Our models and theories derived from our empirical analyses may focus substantially or exclusively on an individual's evolving goals, thoughts, beliefs, emotions and actions. Nevertheless there are always social aspects of information seeking and use present, both implicitly and explicitly. We start by summarizing some of the history of information access with an emphasis on social and collaborative interactions. Then we look at the nature of recommendations, social search and interfaces to support collaboration between information seekers. Following this we consider how the design of interactive information systems is influenced by their social elements

    Planning a Better Future for Dual Eligible Elderly in Montgomery County

    Older adults who are dual eligible (who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid) face a daunting gauntlet of challenges in healthcare. Despite comprehensive coverage through Medicare and Medicaid, the lack of coordination between the two systems creates often insurmountable problems of access and delivery. Federally-funded Medicare lacks coordination and integration with federal-state funded Medicaid. Ironically, it is these dual eligible individuals who so desperately need healthcare since they have a higher incidence of cognitive impairment (including Alzheimer's Disease), mental disorders, diabetes, pulmonary disease and strokes. Further, they are more vulnerable and frail, have lower incomes, and are more isolated than are non-dual eligible elderly. These problems, in turn, contribute to significant challenges with housing, food and transportation. The challenges with access to care are tragic, expensive and avoidable.The high care needs of dual eligible individuals and the associated costs have driven states and the federalgovernment to seek ways to better integrate and coordinate their care. The Affordable Care Act (2010) is teemingwith initiatives, demonstrations, and new opportunities premised on finding a way to better meet dual eligibleindividuals' healthcare needs at a cost-effective rate. While little has yet been done at the state level, localproviders are starting to test innovative approaches to delivering better care to dual eligible individuals.This report summarizes state and federal initiatives and opportunities for delivering better care to dual eligible elderly. It also presents the efforts underway at the County level and by local providers. Following the informational section of the report, the Workgroup presents nine systems change recommendations to better improve the care provided to Montgomery County's dual eligible elderly. The recommendations may stand alone, each reflecting their own systems change, or may be combined in a more encompassing effort at service delivery system overhaul.There are numerous federal opportunities for delivering better care to frail populations. Some of them are specifically targeted towards the dual eligible population and others are targeted towards other populations, but include a considerable number of dual eligible individuals.     Toward a Robust Diversity-Based Model to Detect Changes of Context

    Being able to automatically and quickly understand the user context during a session is a main issue for recommender systems. As a first step toward achieving that goal, we propose a model that observes in real time the diversity brought by each item relatively to a short sequence of consultations, corresponding to the recent user history. Our model has a complexity in constant time, and is generic since it can apply to any type of items within an online service (e.g. profiles, products, music tracks) and any application domain (e-commerce, social network, music streaming), as long as we have partial item descriptions. The observation of the diversity level over time allows us to detect implicit changes. In the long term, we plan to characterize the context, i.e. to find common features among a contiguous sub-sequence of items between two changes of context determined by our model. This will allow us to make context-aware and privacy-preserving recommendations, to explain them to users. As this is an ongoing research, the first step consists here in studying the robustness of our model while detecting changes of context. In order to do so, we use a music corpus of 100 users and more than 210,000 consultations (number of songs played in the global history). We validate the relevancy of our detections by finding connections between changes of context and events, such as ends of session. Of course, these events are a subset of the possible changes of context, since there might be several contexts within a session. We altered the quality of our corpus in several manners, so as to test the performances of our model when confronted with sparsity and different types of items.     Progressor: Social navigation support through open social student modeling

    The increased volumes of online learning content have produced two problems: how to help students to find the most appropriate resources and how to engage them in using these resources. Personalized and social learning have been suggested as potential ways to address these problems. Our work presented in this paper combines the ideas of personalized and social learning in the context of educational hypermedia. We introduce Progressor, an innovative Web-based tool based on the concepts of social navigation and open student modeling that helps students to find the most relevant resources in a large collection of parameterized self-assessment questions on Java programming. We have evaluated Progressor in a semester-long classroom study, the results of which are presented in this paper. The study confirmed the impact of personalized social navigation support provided by the system in the target context. The interface encouraged students to explore more topics attempting more questions and achieving higher success rates in answering them. A deeper analysis of the social navigation support mechanism revealed that the top students successfully led the way to discovering most relevant resources by creating clear pathways for weaker students. © 2013 Taylor and Francis Group, LLC

    Towards personalization in digital libraries through ontologies

    In this paper we describe a browsing and searching personalization system for digital libraries based on the use of ontologies for describing the relationships between all the elements which take part in a digital library scenario of use. The main goal of this project is to help the users of a digital library to improve their experience of use by means of two complementary strategies: first, by maintaining a complete history record of his or her browsing and searching activities, which is part of a navigational user profile which includes preferences and all the aspects related to community involvement; and second, by reusing all the knowledge which has been extracted from previous usage from other users with similar profiles. This can be accomplished in terms of narrowing and focusing the search results and browsing options through the use of a recommendation system which organizes such results in the most appropriate manner, using ontologies and concepts drawn from the semantic web field. The complete integration of the experience of use of a digital library in the learning process is also pursued. Both the usage and information organization can be also exploited to extract useful knowledge from the way users interact with a digital library, knowledge that can be used to improve several design aspects of the library, ranging from internal organization aspects to human factors and user interfaces. Although this project is still on an early development stage, it is possible to identify all the desired functionalities and requirements that are necessary to fully integrate the use of a digital library in an e-learning environment
