    A Personalized Travel Recommendation System Using Social Media Analysis

    Personalization of recommender systems enables customized services to users. Social media is one resource that aids personalization. This study explores the use of twitter data to personalize travel recommendations. A machine learning classification model is used to identify travel related tweets. The travel tweets are then used to personalize recommendations regarding places of interest for the user. Places of interest are categorized as: historical buildings, museums, parks, and restaurants. To better personalize the model, travel tweets of the user\u27s friends and followers are also mined. Volunteer twitter users were asked to provide their twitter handle as well as rank their travel category preferences in a survey. We evaluated our model by comparing the predictions made by our model with the users choices in the survey. The evaluations show 68% prediction accuracy. The accuracy can be improved with a better travel-tweet training dataset as well as a better travel category identification technique using machine learning. The travel categories can be increased to include items like sports venues, musical events, entertainment, etc. and thereby fine-tune the recommendations. The proposed model lists \u27n\u27 places of interest from each category in proportion to the travel category score generated by the model

    Hete-CF: Social-Based Collaborative Filtering Recommendation using Heterogeneous Relations

    Collaborative filtering algorithms haven been widely used in recommender systems. However, they often suffer from the data sparsity and cold start problems. With the increasing popularity of social media, these problems may be solved by using social-based recommendation. Social-based recommendation, as an emerging research area, uses social information to help mitigate the data sparsity and cold start problems, and it has been demonstrated that the social-based recommendation algorithms can efficiently improve the recommendation performance. However, few of the existing algorithms have considered using multiple types of relations within one social network. In this paper, we investigate the social-based recommendation algorithms on heterogeneous social networks and proposed Hete-CF, a Social Collaborative Filtering algorithm using heterogeneous relations. Distinct from the exiting methods, Hete-CF can effectively utilize multiple types of relations in a heterogeneous social network. In addition, Hete-CF is a general approach and can be used in arbitrary social networks, including event based social networks, location based social networks, and any other types of heterogeneous information networks associated with social information. The experimental results on two real-world data sets, DBLP (a typical heterogeneous information network) and Meetup (a typical event based social network) show the effectiveness and efficiency of our algorithm

    Social Information Processing in Social News Aggregation

    The rise of the social media sites, such as blogs, wikis, Digg and Flickr among others, underscores the transformation of the Web to a participatory medium in which users are collaboratively creating, evaluating and distributing information. The innovations introduced by social media has lead to a new paradigm for interacting with information, what we call 'social information processing'. In this paper, we study how social news aggregator Digg exploits social information processing to solve the problems of document recommendation and rating. First, we show, by tracking stories over time, that social networks play an important role in document recommendation. The second contribution of this paper consists of two mathematical models. The first model describes how collaborative rating and promotion of stories emerges from the independent decisions made by many users. The second model describes how a user's influence, the number of promoted stories and the user's social network, changes in time.     Pinterest Board Recommendation for Twitter Users

    Pinboard on Pinterest is an emerging media to engage online social media users, on which users post online images for specific topics. Regardless of its significance, there is little previous work specifically to facilitate information discovery based on pinboards. This paper proposes a novel pinboard recommendation system for Twitter users. In order to associate contents from the two social media platforms, we propose to use MultiLabel classification to map Twitter user followees to pinboard topics and visual diversification to recommend pinboards given user interested topics. A preliminary experiment on a dataset with 2000 users validated our proposed system
