Online backchannel synthesis evaluation with the switching Wizard of Oz
In this paper, we evaluate a backchannel synthesis algorithm in an online conversation between a human speaker and a virtual listener. We adopt the Switching Wizard of Oz (SWOZ) approach to assess behavior synthesis algorithms online. A human speaker watches a virtual listener that is either controlled by a human listener or by an algorithm. The source switches at random intervals. Speakers indicate when they feel they are no longer talking to a human listener. Analysis of these responses reveals patterns of inappropriate behavior in terms of quantity and timing of backchannels
HeadOn: Real-time Reenactment of Human Portrait Videos
We propose HeadOn, the first real-time source-to-target reenactment approach
for complete human portrait videos that enables transfer of torso and head
motion, face expression, and eye gaze. Given a short RGB-D video of the target
actor, we automatically construct a personalized geometry proxy that embeds a
parametric head, eye, and kinematic torso model. A novel real-time reenactment
algorithm employs this proxy to photo-realistically map the captured motion
from the source actor to the target actor. On top of the coarse geometric
proxy, we propose a video-based rendering technique that composites the
modified target portrait video via view- and pose-dependent texturing, and
creates photo-realistic imagery of the target actor under novel torso and head
poses, facial expressions, and gaze directions. To this end, we propose a
robust tracking of the face and torso of the source actor. We extensively
evaluate our approach and show significant improvements in enabling much

Continuous Interaction with a Virtual Human
Attentive Speaking and Active Listening require that a Virtual Human be capable of simultaneous perception/interpretation and production of communicative behavior. A Virtual Human should be able to signal its attitude and attention while it is listening to its interaction partner, and be able to attend to its interaction partner while it is speaking â and modify its communicative behavior on-the-fly based on what it perceives from its partner. This report presents the results of a four week summer project that was part of eNTERFACEâ10. The project resulted in progress on several aspects of continuous interaction such as scheduling and interrupting multimodal behavior, automatic classification of listener responses, generation of response eliciting behavior, and models for appropriate reactions to listener responses. A pilot user study was conducted with ten participants. In addition, the project yielded a number of deliverables that are released for public access

Amarok Pikap: interactive percussion playing automobile
Alternative interfaces that imitate the audio-structure of authentic musical instruments are often equipped with sound generation techniques that feature physical attributes similar to those of the instruments they imitate. Amarok Pikap project utilizes an interactive system on the surface of an automobile that is specially modified with the implementation of various electronic sensors attached to its bodywork. Sur-faces that will be struck to produce sounds in percussive instrument modeling are commonly selected as distinctive surfaces such as electronic pads or keys. In this article we will carry out a status analysis to examine to what extent a percussion- playing interface using FSR and Piezo sensors can represent an authentic musical instrument, and how a new interactive musical interface may draw the interests of the public to a promotional event of an automobile campaign: Amarok Pikap.
