Social, Structured and Semantic Search
International audienceSocial content such as blogs, tweets, news etc. is a rich source of interconnected information. We identify a set of requirements for the meaningful exploitation of such rich content, and present a new data model, called S3, which is the first to satisfy them. S3 captures social relationships between users, and between users and content, but also the structure present in rich social content, as well as its semantics. We provide the first top-k keyword search algorithm taking into account the social, structured, and semantic dimensions and formally establish its termination and correctness. Experiments on real social networks demonstrate the efficiency and qualitative advantage of our algorithm through the joint exploitation of the social, structured, and semantic dimensions of S3
Social semantic search : a case study on web 2.0 for science
When researchers formulate search queries to find relevant content on the Web, those queries typically consist of keywords that can only be matched in the content or its metadata. The Web of Data extends this functionality by bringing structure and giving well-defined meaning to the content and it enables humans and machines to work together using controlled vocabularies. Due the high degree of mismatches between the structure of the content and the vocabularies in different sources, searching over multiple heterogeneous repositories of structured data is considered challenging. Therefore, the authors present a semantic search engine for researchers facilitating search in research related Linked Data. To facilitate high-precision interactive search, they annotated and interlinked structured research data with ontologies from various repositories in an effective semantic model. Furthermore, the authors' system is adaptive as researchers can synchronize using new social media accounts and efficiently explore new datasets

Term-Specific Eigenvector-Centrality in Multi-Relation Networks
Fuzzy matching and ranking are two information retrieval techniques widely used in web search. Their application to structured data, however, remains an open problem. This article investigates how eigenvector-centrality can be used for approximate matching in multi-relation graphs, that is, graphs where connections of many different types may exist. Based on an extension of the PageRank matrix, eigenvectors representing the distribution of a term after propagating term weights between related data items are computed. The result is an index which takes the document structure into account and can be used with standard document retrieval techniques. As the scheme takes the shape of an index transformation, all necessary calculations are performed during index tim
Using semantic indexing to improve searching performance in web archives
The sheer volume of electronic documents being published on the Web can be overwhelming for users if the searching aspect is not properly addressed. This problem is particularly acute inside archives and repositories containing large collections of web resources or, more precisely, web pages and other web objects. Using the existing search capabilities in web archives, results can be compromised because of the size of data, content heterogeneity and changes in scientific terminologies and meanings. During the course of this research, we will explore whether semantic web technologies, particularly ontology-based annotation and retrieval, could improve precision in search results in multi-disciplinary web archives

A linked data-driven & service-oriented architecture for sharing educational resources
The two fundamental aims of managing educational resources are to enable resources to be reusable and interoperable and to enable Web-scale sharing of resources across learning communities. Currently, a variety of approaches have been proposed to expose and manage educational resources and their metadata on the Web. These are usually based on heterogeneous metadata standards and schemas, such as IEEE LOM or ADL SCORM, and diverse repository interfaces such as OAI-PMH or SQI. Also, there is still a lack of usage of controlled vocabularies and available data sets that could replace the widespread use of unstructured text for describing resources. On the other hand, the Linked Data approach has proven that it offers a set of successful principles that have the potential to alleviate the aforementioned issues. In this paper, we introduce an architecture and prototype which is fundamentally based on (a) Linked Data principles and (b) Service-orientation to resolve the integration issues for sharing educational resources
Emergent Capabilities for Collaborative Teams in the Evolving Web Environment
This paper reports on our investigation of the latest advances for the Social Web, Web 2.0 and the Linked Data Web. These advances are discussed in terms of the latest capabilities that are available (or being made available) on the Web at the time of writing this paper. Such capabilities can be of significant benefit to teams, especially those comprised of multinational, geographically-dispersed team members. The specific context of coalition members in a rapidly formed diverse military context such as disaster relief or humanitarian aid is considered, where close working between non-government organisations and non-military teams will help to achieve results as quickly and efficiently as possible. The heterogeneity one finds in such teams, coupled with a lack of dedicated private network infrastructure, poses a number of challenges for collaboration, and the current paper represents an attempt to assess whether nascent Web-based capabilities can support such teams in terms of both their collaborative activities and their access to (and sharing of) information resources
Semantic Web Technologies for Digital Libraries: From Libraries to Social Semantic Digital Libraries (SSDL), Over Semantic Digital Libraries (SDL)
Digital libraries have been an important source of information throughout the history of mankind. It has been present in our societies in different forms. Notably, traditional libraries have found their on the desktops of internet users. They have taken the shape of semantic digital libraries, which are accessible at any time, and accordingly provide a more meaningful search. This paper further discusses social semantic digital libraries that also incorporate the social and collaborative aspect
A Semantic Web of Know-How: Linked Data for Community-Centric Tasks
This paper proposes a novel framework for representing community know-how on
the Semantic Web. Procedural knowledge generated by web communities typically
takes the form of natural language instructions or videos and is largely
unstructured. The absence of semantic structure impedes the deployment of many
useful applications, in particular the ability to discover and integrate
know-how automatically. We discuss the characteristics of community know-how
and argue that existing knowledge representation frameworks fail to represent
it adequately. We present a novel framework for representing the semantic
structure of community know-how and demonstrate the feasibility of our approach
by providing a concrete implementation which includes a method for
automatically acquiring procedural knowledge for real-world tasks.Comment: 6th International Workshop on Web Intelligence & Communities (WIC14),
