    Ground-State Phase Diagram of the Two-Dimensional Quantum Heisenberg Mattis Model

    The two-dimensional S=1/2S=1/2 asymmetric Heisenberg Mattis model is investigated with the exact diagonalization of finite clusters. The N\'eel order parameter and the spin glass order parameter can be smoothly extrapolated to the thermodynamic limit in the antiferromagnetic region, as in the pure Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The critical concentration of the N\'eel phase is consistent with that of the two-dimensional Ising Mattis model, and the spin glass order parameter increases monotonously as the ferro-bond concentration increases. These facts suggest that quantum fluctuation does not play an essential role in two-dimensional non-frustrated random spin systems.     The complications of ‘hiring a hubby’: gender relations and the commoditisation of home maintenance in New Zealand

    This paper examines the commoditization of traditionally male domestic tasks through interviews with handymen who own franchises in the company ‘Hire a Hubby’ in New Zealand and homeowners who have paid for home repair tasks to be done. Discussions of the commoditization of traditionally female tasks in the home have revealed the emotional conflicts of paying others to care as well as the exploitative and degrading conditions that often arise when work takes place behind closed doors. By examining the working conditions and relationships involved when traditionally male tasks are paid for, this paper raises important questions about the valuing of reproductive labour and the production of gendered identities. The paper argues that while working conditions and rates of pay for ‘hubbies’ are better than those for people undertaking commoditized forms of traditionally female domestic labour, the negotiation of this work is still complex and implicated in gendered relations and identities. Working on the home was described by interviewees as an expression of care for family and a performance of the ‘right’ way to be a ‘Kiwi bloke’ and a father. Paying others to do this labour can imply a failure in a duty of care and in the performance of masculinity

    Detection of intrinsic source structure at ~3 Schwarzschild radii with Millimeter-VLBI observations of SAGITTARIUS A*

    We report results from very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) observations of the supermassive black hole in the Galactic center, Sgr A*, at 1.3 mm (230 GHz). The observations were performed in 2013 March using six VLBI stations in Hawaii, California, Arizona, and Chile. Compared to earlier observations, the addition of the APEX telescope in Chile almost doubles the longest baseline length in the array, provides additional {\it uv} coverage in the N-S direction, and leads to a spatial resolution of ∌\sim30 ÎŒ\muas (∌\sim3 Schwarzschild radii) for Sgr A*. The source is detected even at the longest baselines with visibility amplitudes of ∌\sim4-13% of the total flux density. We argue that such flux densities cannot result from interstellar refractive scattering alone, but indicate the presence of compact intrinsic source structure on scales of ∌\sim3 Schwarzschild radii. The measured nonzero closure phases rule out point-symmetric emission. We discuss our results in the context of simple geometric models that capture the basic characteristics and brightness distributions of disk- and jet-dominated models and show that both can reproduce the observed data. Common to these models are the brightness asymmetry, the orientation, and characteristic sizes, which are comparable to the expected size of the black hole shadow. Future 1.3 mm VLBI observations with an expanded array and better sensitivity will allow a more detailed imaging of the horizon-scale structure and bear the potential for a deep insight into the physical processes at the black hole boundary.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, accepted to Ap

    Quantum Effects and Broken Symmetries in Frustrated Antiferromagnets

    We investigate the interplay between frustration and zero-point quantum fluctuations in the ground state of the triangular and J1−J2J_1{-}J_2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets, using finite-size spin-wave theory, exact diagonalization, and quantum Monte Carlo methods. In the triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet, by performing a systematic size-scaling analysis, we have obtained strong evidences for a gapless spectrum and a finite value of the thermodynamic order parameter, thus confirming the existence of long-range N\'eel order.The good agreement between the finite-size spin-wave results and the exact and quantum Monte Carlo data also supports the reliability of the spin-wave expansion to describe both the ground state and the low-energy spin excitations of the triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet. In the J1−J2J_1{-}J_2 Heisenberg model, our results indicate the opening of a finite gap in the thermodynamic excitation spectrum at J2/J1≃0.4J_2/J_1 \simeq 0.4, marking the melting of the antiferromagnetic N\'eel order and the onset of a non-magnetic ground state. In order to characterize the nature of the latter quantum-disordered phase we have computed the susceptibilities for the most important crystal symmetry breaking operators. In the ordered phase the effectiveness of the spin-wave theory in reproducing the low-energy excitation spectrum suggests that the uniform spin susceptibility of the model is very close to the linear spin-wave prediction.Comment: Review article, 44 pages, 18 figures.     IPN localizations of Konus short gamma-ray bursts

    Between the launch of the \textit{GGS Wind} spacecraft in 1994 November and the end of 2010, the Konus-\textit{Wind} experiment detected 296 short-duration gamma-ray bursts (including 23 bursts which can be classified as short bursts with extended emission). During this period, the IPN consisted of up to eleven spacecraft, and using triangulation, the localizations of 271 bursts were obtained. We present the most comprehensive IPN localization data on these events. The short burst detection rate, ∌\sim18 per year, exceeds that of many individual experiments.Comment: Published versio
