    Security of Electrical, Optical and Wireless On-Chip Interconnects: A Survey

    The advancement of manufacturing technologies has enabled the integration of more intellectual property (IP) cores on the same system-on-chip (SoC). Scalable and high throughput on-chip communication architecture has become a vital component in today's SoCs. Diverse technologies such as electrical, wireless, optical, and hybrid are available for on-chip communication with different architectures supporting them. Security of the on-chip communication is crucial because exploiting any vulnerability would be a goldmine for an attacker. In this survey, we provide a comprehensive review of threat models, attacks, and countermeasures over diverse on-chip communication technologies as well as sophisticated architectures.Comment: 41 pages, 24 figures, 4 table

    Multiprocessor platform using LEON3 processor

    The recent advances in embedded systems world, lead us to more complex systems with application specific blocks (IP cores), the System on Chip (SoC) devices. A good example of these complex devices can be encountered in the cell phones that can have image processing cores, communication cores, memory card cores, and others. The need of augmenting systems’ processing performance with lowest power, leads to a concept of Multiprocessor System on Chip (MSoC) in which the execution of multiple tasks can be distributed along various processors. This thesis intends to address the creation of a synthesizable multiprocessing system to be placed in a FPGA device, providing a good flexibility to tailor the system to a specific application. To deliver a multiprocessing system, will be used the synthesisable 32-bit SPARC V8 compliant, LEON3 processor.Os avanços recentes no mundo dos sistemas embebidos levam-nos a sistemas mais complexos com blocos para aplicações específicas (IP cores), os dispositivos System on Chip (SoC). Um bom exemplo destes complexos dispositivos pode ser encontrado nos telemóveis, que podem conter cores de processamento de imagem, cores de comunicações, cores para cartões de memória, entre outros. A necessidade de aumentar o desempenho dos sistemas de processamento com o menor consumo possível, leva ao conceito de Multiprocessor System on Chip (MSoC) em que a execução de múltiplas tarefas pode ser distribuída por vários processadores.     This report documents a special study to define a 32-bit radiation hardened, SEU tolerant flight computer architecture, and to investigate current or near-term technologies and development efforts that contribute to the Advanced Flight Computer (AFC) design and development. An AFC processing node architecture is defined. Each node may consist of a multi-chip processor as needed. The modular, building block approach uses VLSI technology and packaging methods that demonstrate a feasible AFC module in 1998 that meets that AFC goals. The defined architecture and approach demonstrate a clear low-risk, low-cost path to the 1998 production goal, with intermediate prototypes in 1996

    Framework for Simulation of Heterogeneous MpSoC for Design Space Exploration

    Due to the ever-growing requirements in high performance data computation, multiprocessor systems have been proposed to solve the bottlenecks in uniprocessor systems. Developing efficient multiprocessor systems requires effective exploration of design choices like application scheduling, mapping, and architecture design. Also, fault tolerance in multiprocessors needs to be addressed. With the advent of nanometer-process technology for chip manufacturing, realization of multiprocessors on SoC (MpSoC) is an active field of research. Developing efficient low power, fault-tolerant task scheduling, and mapping techniques for MpSoCs require optimized algorithms that consider the various scenarios inherent in multiprocessor environments. Therefore there exists a need to develop a simulation framework to explore and evaluate new algorithms on multiprocessor systems. This work proposes a modular framework for the exploration and evaluation of various design algorithms for MpSoC system. This work also proposes new multiprocessor task scheduling and mapping algorithms for MpSoCs. These algorithms are evaluated using the developed simulation framework. The paper also proposes a dynamic fault-tolerant (FT) scheduling and mapping algorithm for robust application processing. The proposed algorithms consider optimizing the power as one of the design constraints. The framework for a heterogeneous multiprocessor simulation was developed using SystemC/C++ language. Various design variations were implemented and evaluated using standard task graphs. Performance evaluation metrics are evaluated and discussed for various design scenarios

    Balancing reliability, cost, and performance tradeoffs with FreeFault

    Abstract—Memory errors have been a major source of system failures and fault rates may rise even further as memory continues to scale. This increasing fault rate, especially when combined with advent of integrated on-package memories, may exceed the capabilities of traditional fault tolerance mecha-nisms or significantly increase their overhead. In this paper, we present FreeFault as a hardware-only, transparent, and nearly-free resilience mechanism that is implemented entirely within a processor and can tolerate the majority of DRAM faults. FreeFault repurposes portions of the last-level cache for storing retired memory regions and augments a hardware memory scrubber to monitor memory health and aid retirement decisions. Because it relies on existing structures (cache associativity) for retirement/remapping type repair, FreeFault has essentially no hardware overhead. Because it requires a very modest portion of the cache (as small as 8KB) to cover a large fraction of DRAM faults, FreeFault has almost no impact on performance. We explain how FreeFault adds an attractive layer in an overall resilience scheme of highly-reliable and highly-available systems by delaying, and even entirely avoiding, calling upon software to make tradeoff decisions between memory capacity, performance, and reliability.     Gossip NoC -- Avoiding Timing Side-Channel Attacks through Traffic Management

    International audience—The wide use of Multi-processing systems-on-chip (MPSoCs) in embedded systems and the trend to increase the integration between devices have turned these systems vulnerable to attacks. Malicious software executed on compromised IP may become a serious security problem. By snooping the traffic exchanged through the Network-on-chip (NoC), it is possible to infer sensitive information such as secrets keys. NoCs are vulnerable to side channel attacks that exploit traffic interference as timing channels. When multiple IP cores are infected, they can work coordinately to implement a distributed timing attack (DTA). In this work we present for the first time the execution of a DTA and a secure enhanced NoC architecture able to avoid the timing attacks. Results show that our NoC proposal can avoid the DTA with an increase of only 1% in area and 0.8% in power regarding the whole chip design

    High-level services for networks-on-chip

    Future technology trends envision that next-generation Multiprocessors Systems-on- Chip (MPSoCs) will be composed of a combination of a large number of processing and storage elements interconnected by complex communication architectures. Communication and interconnection between these basic blocks play a role of crucial importance when the number of these elements increases. Enabling reliable communication channels between cores becomes therefore a challenge for system designers. Networks-on-Chip (NoCs) appeared as a strategy for connecting and managing the communication between several design elements and IP blocks, as required in complex Systems-on-Chip (SoCs). The topic can be considered as a multidisciplinary synthesis of multiprocessing, parallel computing, networking, and on- chip communication domains. Networks-on-Chip, in addition to standard communication services, can be employed for providing support for the implementation of system-level services. This dissertation will demonstrate how high-level services can be added to an MPSoC platform by embedding appropriate hardware/software support in the network interfaces (NIs) of the NoC. In this dissertation, the implementation of innovative modules acting in parallel with protocol translation and data transmission in NIs is proposed and evaluated. The modules can support the execution of the high-level services in the NoC at a relatively low cost in terms of area and energy consumption. Three types of services will be addressed and discussed: security, monitoring, and fault tolerance. With respect to the security aspect, this dissertation will discuss the implementation of an innovative data protection mechanism for detecting and preventing illegal accesses to protected memory blocks and/or memory mapped peripherals. The second aspect will be addressed by proposing the implementation of a monitoring system based on programmable multipurpose monitoring probes aimed at detecting NoC internal events and run-time characteristics. As last topic, new architectural solutions for the design of fault tolerant network interfaces will be presented and discussed

    Integration of tools for the Design and Assessment of High-Performance, Highly Reliable Computing Systems (DAHPHRS), phase 1

    Systems for Space Defense Initiative (SDI) space applications typically require both high performance and very high reliability. These requirements present the systems engineer evaluating such systems with the extremely difficult problem of conducting performance and reliability trade-offs over large design spaces. A controlled development process supported by appropriate automated tools must be used to assure that the system will meet design objectives. This report describes an investigation of methods, tools, and techniques necessary to support performance and reliability modeling for SDI systems development. Models of the JPL Hypercubes, the Encore Multimax, and the C.S. Draper Lab Fault-Tolerant Parallel Processor (FTPP) parallel-computing architectures using candidate SDI weapons-to-target assignment algorithms as workloads were built and analyzed as a means of identifying the necessary system models, how the models interact, and what experiments and analyses should be performed. As a result of this effort, weaknesses in the existing methods and tools were revealed and capabilities that will be required for both individual tools and an integrated toolset were identified

    On the Determinism of Multi-core Processors

    Hard real time systems are evolving in order to respond to the increasing demand in complex functionalities while taking advantage of newer hardware. Software development for safety critical systems has to comply with strict requirements that will facilitate the certification process. During this process, each part of the system is evaluated, requiring a certain level of assurance in order to provide confidence in the product. In particular there must be a level of confidence that the system behaves deterministically that may be based on functionality, resources and time. The success of system verification depends greatly on the capacity to determine its exact behavior. Nonetheless, hardware evolved in order to maximize the average computation power throughput with little to no regard to the deterministic aspect. Therefore modern architectural features of processors, like pipelines, cache memories and co-processors, make it hard to verify that all the needed properties are respected. The multi-core is furthermore difficult to analyze as the architecture employs mechanisms that compromise strong spatial and temporal partitioning when using shared resources without rigorous access control like shared caches or shared input/outputs. In this paper we identify and analyze the main sources of nondeterminism of the multi-cores with regard to the timing estimation. Precise determination of the worst case execution time is a challenging task even in single-core architectures. The problems are accentuated in the multi-core context mainly due to the resource sharing that can lead to highly complex interactions or to nondeterminism. Most of the units that generate behaviors that are hard to take into account can be deactivated, but it is not always easy to predict the impact on the performance. Nevertheless some of the features cannot be disabled (such as the out of order execution or some nondeterministic crossbar access policies) which leads to the invalidation of the respective platform for applications with high criticality level. We will address the problematic units, propose configuration or architecture guidelines and estimate their impact on the performance and determinism of the system
