    Macroeconomics and money in developing countries: an econometric model for an Asian region

    This thesis is a contribution towards the macroeconomic and monetary analysis of developing countries. A fully-fledged macroeconometric model is theoretically specified, econometrically estimated and dynamically simulated for policy analysis. The model contains demand side, supply side, balance of payments accounts, government accounts and a financial sector. The model is tested using regional data consisting of seven Asian Developing Countries, namely, Fiji, India, Malayasia, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. A regional econometric model for Asian LDCs was lacking in the realm of global econometric models and this study is an attempt to bridge this gap by building a first ever model for this region. In the demand side of the model volume equations for consumption, investment, exports and imports and an equation for export prices are estimated. The supply side is derived from wage and price equations following a production function approach which is neo-classical in spirit. Inflation is modelled as a function of the divergence between demand and supply. Government accounts and the balance of payments accounts are fully specified. Most of the existing macroeconomic models in LDCs context abstract from modelling a financial sector. The implicit reason for this is that the financial sector in these economies is underdeveloped; therefore, little scope exists for monetary policy instruments. We have developed a detailed bank based financial sector model where all the balance sheet flows of the Central Bank and commercial banks are at the centre stage. We show that monetary policy instruments are effective in affecting macro activity. The interlinkage between the financial and the real sector comes not through the cost of capital, rather it arises due to income-expenditure flows and the real financial asset stocks. Such linkages operate even if the financial sector is undeveloped

    Distribution, range connectivity, and trends of bear populations in Southeast Asia

Advisor: Francesca Cuthbert. 1 computer file (PDF); ix, 123 pages.Sun bears and Asiatic black bears co-occur in Southeast Asia with wide areas of overlapping range. Both species are in decline, and are vulnerable to extinction due mainly to habitat loss and illegal hunting. Efforts to conserve bears in Southeast Asia are hampered by a lack of basic knowledge of distribution, population trends and habitat configuration. To advance the scientific understanding of sun bears and Asiatic back bears in this region I investigated fine and broad scale patterns of distribution. In Lao PDR, I gathered data on bear occurrence using bear sign transects walked in multiple forest blocks throughout the country. To model the country-wide relative abundance of bears and habitat quality, I related bear sign to environmental factors associated with bear occurrence. Within global sun bear range, I gathered camera trap records of sun bear detections from seven sun bear range countries. To generate quantitative measures of sun bear population trends, I related sun bear detection rates to tree cover and estimated related changes in country and global-level sun bear populations based on tree cover loss. To evaluate the global extent of sun bear range connectivity, I used the modelled relationship between sun bears and tree cover to create a habitat suitability index, and I identified areas of fractured range that have created unnatural subpopulations that are at risk from isolation. In Lao PDR, bears selected for areas of high elevation, rugged terrain, and areas of high tree density far from roads. My model-based estimates of sun bear global population trends predicted that over a 30-year period, sun bear populations in mainland southeast Asia have potentially declined by close to 20%, and insular sun bear populations have declined by ~50%. I identified seven potential sun bear subpopulations; two that are fully isolated with no potential for inter-subpopulation movement, and in the other five, inter and intra-subpopulation habitat fragmentation occurs in a continuum of severity. My findings advance the understanding of patterns in bear distribution and trends in southeast Asia, identify research priorities, and lay a framework for future monitoring efforts at country and region-level scales. I conclude with recommendations on how to better manage camera trap data for secondary research and sharing

    Enigmatic Indian Oil Sardine: An Insight

    Marine capture fisheries is an important component of the fisheries sector in India, generating livelihood avenues for an estimated 3.79 million fishers directly besides those involved in the secondary and tertiary structures concerned with fish marketing, processing and exports of fish and fishery products. Sustainable harvesting of the marine fishery resources is important in a scenario where there is large scale over-capitalisation in the sector and abrupt and long-term disruptions in environmental parameters due to climate change related processes. The Indian Oil Sardine, a major single species fishery in India accounts for 17 - 20% of the total marine fish landings. At the national level, in landing volumes it is the top ranked species during most years. Among marine fishes, its importance as a favoured table fish and rich source of fish oils creates a unique position for the Indian oil sardine in terms of its economic value. However, the resource is prone to sudden fluctuations in abundance that makes it an enigma to researchers, fishers and managers. ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute has conducted extensive research on the resource since its inception and several aspects of its biology, fishery and stock assessment have been reported periodically. Considering the importance of this resource to the marine fisheries sector of India, it is important to compile all existing information and subsequent research insights to assist its efficient management along the Indian coast. I am happy that the scientists of the Pelagic Fisheries Division of CMFRI have completed the task of compiling all recent information and analysed large amount of data collected pertaining to the Indian Oil Sardine in this document for the benefit of all stakeholders interested in knowing about this valuable fishery resource
