    Shared ethnography of shared cities

    This paper aims to foreground issues for design ethnographers working in urban contexts within the smart-city discourse. It highlights ethnography’s role in a shared urban future by exploring how ethnographers might pave the way for envisioning digital infrastructure at the core of Smart City programs. This paper begins by asking whether urban development practitioners can design for inclusive interaction with Smart Urban Infrastructure. The research suggests how ethnographers can work with ‘cities’ to rapidly develop diagnostic tools and capture insights that inform design processes with both utility and inclusive interaction as their key values. This involves rethinking how we consider places where space and information intersect. This work led to developing rapid means to assay a site and sensitize to contextual issues by tapping into heuristic expertise innate in city dwellers. This means doing ethnography in parallel with publics as opposed to performing ethnography ‘on’ them. Hence we discuss a fresh ethnographic perspective that can be especially useful in this context; shared ethnography

    Personalised privacy in pervasive and ubiquitous systems

    Our world is edging closer to the realisation of pervasive systems and their integration in our everyday life. While pervasive systems are capable of offering many benefits for everyone, the amount and quality of personal information that becomes available raise concerns about maintaining user privacy and create a real need to reform existing privacy practices and provide appropriate safeguards for the user of pervasive environments. This thesis presents the PERSOnalised Negotiation, Identity Selection and Management (PersoNISM) system; a comprehensive approach to privacy protection in pervasive environments using context aware dynamic personalisation and behaviour learning. The aim of the PersoNISM system is twofold: to provide the user with a comprehensive set of privacy protecting tools and to help them make the best use of these tools according to their privacy needs. The PersoNISM system allows users to: a) configure the terms and conditions of data disclosure through the process of privacy policy negotiation, which addresses the current “take it or leave it” approach; b) use multiple identities to interact with pervasive services to avoid the accumulation of vast amounts of personal information in a single user profile; and c) selectively disclose information based on the type of information, who requests it, under what context, for what purpose and how the information will be treated. The PersoNISM system learns user privacy preferences by monitoring the behaviour of the user and uses them to personalise and/or automate the decision making processes in order to unburden the user from manually controlling these complex mechanisms.     District heating and cooling networks with decentralised energy substations: opportunities and barriers for holistic energy system decarbonisation

    Decarbonisation of the thermal grid whilst ensuring affordability and security of supply, requires a holistic approach which relies on sector coupling and energy storage. District heating and cooling networks with decentralised energy substations featuring heat pumps and thermal energy storage could provide such holistic heat decarbonisation. However, the extent of sector synergies, technoeconomic and market uptake hurdles are still unclear. This paper evaluates the opportunities and barriers related to technoeconomic performance, sector coupling facilitation and market uptake of district heating and cooling networks with decentralised energy substations. It follows a systematic literature review process and integrates its findings with insights from interviews held with 18 stakeholders from leading academic and industrial institutions. Findings suggest that high seasonal demand co-occurrence is crucial to minimize operational costs. Networks with a low number of prosumers can avoid hydraulic instabilities and control complexities and offer grid stability through voltage and frequency regulation when correctly coordinated. Novel mechanisms on business models, asset ownership and tariff structure are vital for a widespread market uptake. Overall, the system needs to be viewed as a tool in the arsenal of decarbonisation solutions with further research required on beneficial operation boundaries, hydraulic operation standardisation and business structure redefinition

    Educational Entrepreneurs: The Professional Experiences of Five Edupreneurs

    This dissertation aims to understand and elucidate the journeys of educational entrepreneurs in the K-12 education space. This qualitative investigation was motivated by three research questions: (1) What are some of the instigating, contributing, and continuing factors that motivate a business or an educational professional toward educational entrepreneurship? (2) How do the studied individuals describe and analyze their journeys from professionals to edupreneurs, and what were key turning points along the way? (3) How can individual stories of educational entrepreneurs help illuminate the topics surrounding educational reform, student and community needs, and teacher professionalism? To date, the literature examining educational entrepreneurship remains sparse, and this dissertation attempts to provide greater understanding regarding this specialized nexus of the business and educational fields. The research considered and described the phenomenological experience of educational entrepreneurship, presenting it in narrative form organized by significant themes derived from the semi-structured interviews of five experienced entrepreneurs. The resulting interview data was condensed into five significant themes: (1) The nature of the niche; (2) The world of business versus the world of education; (3) Challenges, epiphanies, and bumps in the road; (4) Educational entrepreneurship; (5) Lessons learned and hard-earned advice. The major findings from the research indicate that edupreneurs tend to enter entrepreneurship through the realization of a specific need or niche, and often find both challenge and reward in the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of students. The space of educational entrepreneurship is idiosyncratically viewed as a nexus between the business and education worlds wherein entrepreneurs must develop deep understandings of the educational service or product, client(s), pacing, and growth/scaling potential. Edupreneurs offer unique perspectives to issues of school improvement and reform due to their unique entrepreneurial lens, a persistent focus on alternate approaches and niche solutions, the potential for universal solutions to problems, and the entrepreneurial tendency toward ongoing innovation and adaptation. This study provides support for the notion that educational entrepreneurs offer valuable experience and insight into both the practical and philosophical realms of education

    Contribution to the integration, performance improvement, and smart management of data and resources in the Internet of Things

    [SPA] Esta tesis doctoral se presenta bajo la modalidad de compendio de publicaciones.[ENG] This doctoral dissertation has been presented in the form of thesis by publication. The IoT has seen a tremendous growth in the last few years. Not only due to its potential to transform societies, but also as an enabling technology for many other technological advances. Unfortunately, the IoT is a relatively recent paradigm that lacks the maturity of other well-established (not so recent) revolutions like the internet itself or Wireless Sensor Networks; upon which the IoT is built. The presented Thesis contributes to this maturation process by researching on the underlying communication mechanisms that enable a truly ubiquitous and effective IoT. As a Thesis by compilation, 5 relevant articles are introduced and discussed. Each of such articles delve into different key aspects that, in their own way, help closing the gap between what the IoT is expected to bring and what the IoT actually brings. As thoroughly commented throughout the main text, the comprehensive approach taken in this Thesis ensures that multiple angles of the same plane --the communication plane-- are analyzed and studied. From the mathematical analysis of how electromagnetic waves propagate through complex environments to the utilization of recent Machine Learning techniques, this Thesis explore a wide range of scientific and researching tools that are shown to improve the final performance of the IoT. In the first three chapters of this document, the reader will be introduced to the current context and state-of-the-art of the IoT while, at the same time, the formal objectives of this Thesis are outlined and set into such a global context. In the next five chapters, the five corresponding articles are presented and commented. For each and every of these articles: a brief abstract, a methodology summary, a highlight on the results and contributions and final conclusions are also added.
