    Correlating low energy impact damage with changes in modal parameters: diagnosis tools and FE validation

    This paper presents a basic experimental technique and simplified FE based models for the detection, localization and quantification of impact damage in composite beams around the BVID level. Detection of damage is carried out by shift in modal parameters. Localization of damage is done by a topology optimization tool which showed that correct damage locations can be found rather efficiently for low-level damage. The novelty of this paper is that we develop an All In One (AIO) package dedicated to impact identification by modal analysis. The damaged zones in the FE models are updated by reducing the most sensitive material property in order to improve the experimental/numerical correlation of the frequency response functions. These approximate damage models(in term of equivalent rigidity) give us a simple degradation factor that can serve as a warning regarding structure safety

    Smart monitoring of aeronautical composites plates based on electromechanical impedance measurements and artificial neural networks

    This paper presents a structural health monitoring (SHM) method for in situ damage detection and localization in carbon fiber reinforced plates (CFRPs). The detection is achieved using the electromechanical impedance (EMI) technique employing piezoelectric transducers as high-frequency modal sensors. Numerical simulations based on the finite element method are carried out so as to simulate more than a hundred damage scenarios. Damage metrics are then used to quantify and detect changes between the electromechanical impedance spectrum of a pristine and damaged structure. The localization process relies on artificial neural networks (ANNs) whose inputs are derived from a principal component analysis of the damage metrics. It is shown that the resulting ANN can be used as a tool to predict the in-plane position of a single damage in a laminated composite plate

    Engine Oil Condition Monitoring Using High Temperature Integrated Ultrasonic Transducers

    The present work contains two parts. In the first part, high temperature integrated ultrasonic transducers (IUTs) made of thick piezoelectric composite films, were coated directly onto lubricant oil supply and sump lines of a modified CF700 turbojet engine. These piezoelectric films were fabricated using a sol-gel spray technology. By operating these IUTs in transmission mode, the amplitude and velocity of transmitted ultrasonic waves across the flow channel of the lubricant oil in supply and sump lines were measured during engine operation. Results have shown that the amplitude of the ultrasonic waves is sensitive to the presence of air bubbles in the oil and that the ultrasound velocity is linearly dependent on oil temperature. In the second part of the work, the sensitivity of ultrasound to engine lubricant oil degradation was investigated by using an ultrasonically equipped and thermally-controlled laboratory testing cell and lubricant oils of different grades. The results have shown that at a given temperature, ultrasound velocity decreases with a decrease in oil viscosity. Based on the results obtained in both parts of the study, ultrasound velocity measurement is proposed for monitoring oil degradation and transient oil temperature variation, whereas ultrasound amplitude measurement is proposed for monitoring air bubble content

    A smart multi-functional printed sensor for monitoring curing and damage of composite repair patch

    A novel multifunctional diagnostic sensor is developed as a cost-effective, in-service structural health monitoring (SHM) system for determining the initial quality of curing of a bonded composite repair patch and assessing its long-term durability on composite structure. The proposed multi-functional sensor technology involves the creation of a "tailor-to-order" 2D conductive patterns onto step-sanded repair surface of composite repair patch using inkjet printing. In employing this methodology, bondline quality during curing and in service was successfully assessed via Impedance spectroscopy and resistance change measurements, respectively. The ability of this technology to effectively monitor the integrity of the bondline and the extent of damage in real-time was investigated by subjecting the scarf-repaired CFRP panels to 3-point bending fatigue and low-velocity impact tests. The obtained results were compared with those of transient infrared thermography (IrT) and ultrasound inspection techniques, thus validating the proposed method

    Experimental Investigation of Laser-Induced Optoacoustic Wave Propagation for Damage Detection

    abstract: This thesis intends to cover the experimental investigation of the propagation of laser-generated optoacoustic waves in structural materials and how they can be utilized for damage detection. Firstly, a system for scanning a rectangular patch on the sample is designed. This is achieved with the help of xy stages which are connected to the laser head and allow it to move on a plane. Next, a parametric study was designed to determine the optimum testing parameters of the laser. The parameters so selected were then used in a series of tests which helped in discerning how the Ultrasound Waves behave when damage is induced in the sample (in the form of addition of masses). The first test was of increasing the mases in the sample. The second test was a scan of a rectangular area of the sample with and without damage to find the effect of the added masses. Finally, the data collected in such a manner is processed with the help of the Hilbert-Huang transform to determine the time of arrival. The major benefits from this study are the fact that this is a Non-Destructive imaging technique and thus can be used as a new method for detection of defects and is fairly cheap as well.Dissertation/ThesisMasters Thesis Mechanical Engineering 201

Several studies suggest that an increase of nocturia is seen with the onset of age, occurring in around 70% of adults over the age of 70. Its appearance is associated with detrimental quality of life for those who present nocturia, since it leads to daytime sleepiness, cognitive dysfunction, among others. Currently, a voiding diary is necessary for nocturia assessment; these are prone to bias due to their inherent subjectivity. In this paper, we present the design of a low-cost device that automatically detects micturition events. The device obtained 73% in sensibility and 81% in specificity; these results show that systems such as the proposed one can be a valuable tool for the medical team when evaluating nocturia. © 2013 IEEE.https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/845445
