    Get PDF
Blind and Visually impaired people (BVIP) face a range of practical difficulties when undertaking outdoor journeys as pedestrians. Over the past decade, a variety of assistive devices have been researched and developed to help BVIP navigate more safely and independently. In~addition, research in overlapping domains are addressing the problem of automatic environment interpretation using computer vision and machine learning, particularly deep learning, approaches. Our aim in this article is to present a comprehensive review of research directly in, or relevant to, assistive outdoor navigation for BVIP. We breakdown the navigation area into a series of navigation phases and tasks. We then use this structure for our systematic review of research, analysing articles, methods, datasets and current limitations by task. We also provide an overview of commercial and non-commercial navigation applications targeted at BVIP. Our review contributes to the body of knowledge by providing a comprehensive, structured analysis of work in the domain, including the state of the art, and guidance on future directions. It will support both researchers and other stakeholders in the domain to establish an informed view of research progress

    Get PDF
To assess different approaches to traffic light control design, a systematic literature review was conducted, covering publications from 2006 to 2020. The review’s aim was to gather and examine all studies that looked at road traffic and congestion issues. As well, it aims to extract and analyze protruding techniques from selected research articles in order to provide researchers and practitioners with recommendations and solutions. The research approach has placed a strong emphasis on planning, performing the analysis, and reporting the results. According to the results of the study, there has yet to be developed a specific design that senses road traffic and provides intelligent solutions. Dynamic time intervals, learning capability, emergency priority management, and intelligent functionality are all missing from the conventional design approach. While learning skills in the adaptive self-organization strategy were missed. Nonetheless, the vast majority of intelligent design approach papers lacked intelligent fear tires and learning abilities

Abstract The Wireless Sensor Networks are widely used to detect and exchange information and in recent years they have been increasingly involved in Intelligent Transportation System applications, especially in dynamic management of signalized intersections. In fact, the real-time knowledge of information concerning traffic light junctions represents a valid solution to congestion problems. In this paper, a wireless network architecture, based on IEEE 802.15.4 or Bluetooth, in order to monitor vehicular traffic flows near to traffic lights, is introduced. Moreover, an innovative algorithm is proposed in order to determine dynamically green times and phase sequence of traffic lights, based on measured values of traffic flows. Several simulations compare IEEE 802.15.4 and Bluetooth protocols in order to identify the more suitable communication protocol for ITS applications. Furthermore, in order to confirm the validity of the proposed algorithm for the dynamic management of traffic lights, some case studies have been considered and several simulations have been performed

Datacentric analysis to reduce pedestrians accidents: A case study in Colombia

    Get PDF
International audienceSince 2012, in a case-study in Bucaramanga-Colombia, 179 pedestrians died in car accidents, and another 2873 pedestrians were injured. Each day, at least one passerby is involved in a tragedy. Knowing the causes to decrease accidents is crucial, and using system-dynamics to reproduce the collisions' events is critical to prevent further accidents. This work implements simulations to save lives by reducing the city's accidental rate and suggesting new safety policies to implement. Simulation's inputs are video recordings in some areas of the city. Deep Learning analysis of the images results in the segmentation of the different objects in the scene, and an interaction model identifies the primary reasons which prevail in the pedestrians or vehicles' behaviours. The first and most efficient safety policy to implement-validated by our simulations-would be to build speed bumps in specific places before the crossings reducing the accident rate by 80%

The city government of Tangerang has not been able to apply the concept of smart cities, while urban development has not used the concept of smart (intelligen) and attractive (attractive) which facilitates infrastructure, technology, and attracts local people based on a forward vision regarding the needs, capabilities and resources that exist. , safe and comfortable pedestrian facilities, and public spaces for pedestrians that can create an urban cultural concept that can provide business controversies that can help migrants and communities enjoy the city by foot. The purpose of this study is to study how the Tangerang City government can implement a development system that can be lived in and can be visited in accordance with the Tangerang Direct motto. This study uses a qualitative method that studies the literature with systematic literature review techniques by descriptive data analysis. The results of this study indicate that the Tangerang city government has just realized the construction of a pedestrian lane with a ratio of 72.40% of the length of the city road which has a length of 316.46 km with a very narrow space dimension of 1.5 meters combined with greening areas

INTELLIGENT SYSTEM FOR IMPROVED SAFETY OF PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC LIGHTS

    Get PDF
The high concentration of vehicles and pedestrians at traffic lights makes them a common place for road accidents to occur. The main reason for them is the behavior of vehicle drivers and pedestrians, who often violate the traffic law because of incorrect judgments. This study investigates a special type of traffic lights, which are located on places without roads intersection. In the present study, a concept for improving the safety of such traffic lights is suggested. The method suggests a novel algorithm for the detection of pedestrians, based on image processing and a background pattern. The concept of the detection system makes it applicable in different climatic conditions, such as rain, snow, dust, etc., and offers many advantages over the current situation in Bulgaria. The intelligent system only detects pedestrians in the waiting zones, in order to optimize the traffic problems, such as traffic delays, use by disabled people, protection against troublesome users, etc

Pelican Crossing System for Control a Green Man Light with Predicted Age

Traffic lights are generally used to regulate the control flow of traffic at an intersection from all directions, including a pelican crossing system with traffic signals for pedestrians. There are two facilities for walker crossing, namely using a pedestrian bridge and a zebra cross. In general, the traffic signals of the pelican crossing system are a fixed time, whereas other pedestrians need "green man" traffic lights with duration time arrangement. Our research proposes a prototype intelligent pelican crossing system for somebody who crosses the road at zebra crossings, but the risk of falling while crossing is not expected, especially in the elderly age group or pedestrians who are pregnant or carrying children. On the other hand, the problem is that the average step length or stride length (distance in centimeter), cadence or walking rate (in steps per minute), and the possibility of accidents are very high for pedestrians to make sure do crossing during the lights “green man”. The new idea of our research aims to set the adaptive time arrangement on the pelican crossing intelligent system of the traffic lights “green man” based on the age of the pedestrians with artificial intelligence using two combined methods of the FaceNet and AgeNet. The resulting measure can predict the age of pedestrians of the training dataset of 66.67% and testing prototype in real-time with participants on the pelican crossing system of 73% (single face) and 76% (multi faces)

Walking is a daily activity that requires an appropriate crosswalk as a key part of the provision of safe transportation infrastructure. In this paper, we design and develop a portable smart wireless control system for pedestrian crossing areas to manage the traffic automatically and allow the pedestrian, like school children, to cross the road safely and effortlessly. The system incorporates the concept of smart sensing to detect the presence of pedestrians and in turn, automatically controls the crosswalk traffic lights. The system composes of two Arduino microcontrollers, two infrared PIR motion sensors, and a bidirectional wireless communication link based on Bluetooth for mitigating wiring installation and transmitting the signal among traffic light units on both roadsides. The system is fabricated and implemented as a portable LED-based traffic light testbed. The developed system is tested and validated in a real environment with a 6 m road width on the university campus. According to the obtained results, the system worked effectively and fulfilled the design criteria where the communication between both sides lights is successfully functioning and the PIR sensors can accurately detect the existence of pedestrians. The developed system is cost-effective, energyefficient, easy to install, and maintenance-free
