Privacy Mining from IoT-based Smart Homes
Recently, a wide range of smart devices are deployed in a variety of
environments to improve the quality of human life. One of the important
IoT-based applications is smart homes for healthcare, especially for elders.
IoT-based smart homes enable elders' health to be properly monitored and taken
care of. However, elders' privacy might be disclosed from smart homes due to
non-fully protected network communication or other reasons. To demonstrate how
serious this issue is, we introduce in this paper a Privacy Mining Approach
(PMA) to mine privacy from smart homes by conducting a series of deductions and
analyses on sensor datasets generated by smart homes. The experimental results
demonstrate that PMA is able to deduce a global sensor topology for a smart
home and disclose elders' privacy in terms of their house layouts.Comment: This paper, which has 11 pages and 7 figures, has been accepted BWCCA

RFID Localisation For Internet Of Things Smart Homes: A Survey
The Internet of Things (IoT) enables numerous business opportunities in
fields as diverse as e-health, smart cities, smart homes, among many others.
The IoT incorporates multiple long-range, short-range, and personal area
wireless networks and technologies into the designs of IoT applications.
Localisation in indoor positioning systems plays an important role in the IoT.
Location Based IoT applications range from tracking objects and people in
real-time, assets management, agriculture, assisted monitoring technologies for
healthcare, and smart homes, to name a few. Radio Frequency based systems for
indoor positioning such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a key
enabler technology for the IoT due to its costeffective, high readability
rates, automatic identification and, importantly, its energy efficiency
characteristic. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art RFID technologies in
IoT Smart Homes applications. It presents several comparable studies of RFID
based projects in smart homes and discusses the applications, techniques,
algorithms, and challenges of adopting RFID technologies in IoT smart home
systems.Comment: 18 pages, 2 figures, 3 table
HABITAT: An IoT solution for independent elderly
In this work, a flexible and extensive digital platform for Smart Homes is presented, exploiting the most advanced technologies of the Internet of Things, such as Radio Frequency Identification, wearable electronics, Wireless Sensor Networks, and Artificial Intelligence. Thus, the main novelty of the paper is the system-level description of the platform flexibility allowing the interoperability of different smart devices. This research was developed within the framework of the operative project HABITAT (Home Assistance Based on the Internet of Things for the Autonomy of Everybody), aiming at developing smart devices to support elderly people both in their own houses and in retirement homes, and embedding them in everyday life objects, thus reducing the expenses for healthcare due to the lower need for personal assistance, and providing a better life quality to the elderly users. In this work, a flexible and extensive digital platform for Smart Homes is presented, exploiting the most advanced technologies of the Internet of Things, such as Radio Frequency Identification, wearable electronics, Wireless Sensor Networks, and Artificial Intelligence. Smart Textiles in Building and Living Applications: WG4 CONTEXT Insight on Elderly and Healthcare Environments
Over the past 30 years, the development of new technologies and especially of smart textiles has unavoidably led to new applications of traditional textiles in the built environment. Depending on special constructional needs (i.e., acoustic insulation, thermal insulation, shading system, etc.) or health monitoring and supporting needs (i.e., for patients with chronical disease, etc.), an increasing number of possible applications has been proposed to improve human well-being. This is especially the case for healthcare environments (like elderly or nursing homes, etc.), but also educational environments (like schools, etc.) where young or old customers can benefit from technological innovation in several ways. As an ongoing activity of WG4 members for the CA17107 “CONTEXT” European research network, this study presents a review on selected applications for building and living solutions, with special attention to healthcare environments, giving evidence of major outcomes and potentials for smart textiles-based products
