    Generation of learning paths in educational texts based on vocabulary co-occurrence networks in Wikipedia and randomness

    We propose a new computational method for generating learning paths ineducational texts. The method relies on forming vocabulary co-occurrence networks amongarticles of Wikipedia online encyclopedia and exploiting random explorations to generateroute weighting parameters to form pedagogic co-occurrence networks. Motivated by previousresearch about scale-free small-world networks we suggest our networks to offer efficient andintuitive properties for knowledge representation and learning. In the context of cell biologywe provide experimental results about the properties of the linkage emerging in the vocabularyco-occurrence networks in a set of 175 Wikipedia articles and contrast it with the linkageemerging in the corresponding hyperlink network in Wikipedia. Furthermore we describeformation of the pedagogic co-occurrence network that can be exploited to recommendlearning paths for the student.Copyright by AACE.     SLIM : Scalable Linkage of Mobility Data

    We present a scalable solution to link entities across mobility datasets using their spatio-temporal information. This is a fundamental problem in many applications such as linking user identities for security, understanding privacy limitations of location based services, or producing a unified dataset from multiple sources for urban planning. Such integrated datasets are also essential for service providers to optimise their services and improve business intelligence. In this paper, we first propose a mobility based representation and similarity computation for entities. An efficient matching process is then developed to identify the final linked pairs, with an automated mechanism to decide when to stop the linkage. We scale the process with a locality-sensitive hashing (LSH) based approach that significantly reduces candidate pairs for matching. To realize the effectiveness and efficiency of our techniques in practice, we introduce an algorithm called SLIM. In the experimental evaluation, SLIM outperforms the two existing state-of-the-art approaches in terms of precision and recall. Moreover, the LSH-based approach brings two to four orders of magnitude speedup

    Entrepreneurship and performance around MNC affiliates

    The aim of this study is the analysis of the influence of a multinational company (MNC) on its local suppliers network within the host territory. We have particularly focused on how the MNC influences the performance of supplier as well as non-supplier local companies. Our study has shown the how the existence of knowledge transfer influences productivity through the productive linkage established with local suppliers and their hiring of MNC former managers. Direct local suppliers have been shown to experience higher productivity than do local suppliers from lower levels of the supply chain. Similarly, local suppliers hiring MNC former managers have shown higher productivity than those who have hired only local managers. In addition, no significant differences in productivity have been found between strategic and non-strategic suppliers

    Improving the evaluation of web search systems

    Linkage analysis as an aid to web search has been assumed to be of significant benefit and we know that it is being implemented by many major Search Engines. Why then have few TREC participants been able to scientifically prove the benefits of linkage analysis over the past three years? In this paper we put forward reasons why disappointing results have been found and we identify the linkage density requirements of a dataset to faithfully support experiments into linkage analysis. We also report a series of linkage-based retrieval experiments on a more densely linked dataset culled from the TREC web documents

    The genomic Make-Up of a Hybrid Species - Analysis of the Invasive Cottus Lineage (Pisces, Teleostei) in the River Rhine system

    In the past years a new invasive lineage of sculpins (Cottus species complex) has been studied that is currently expanding in the Lower River Rhine. Molecular analysis showed that this lineage has originated through hybridization of Cottus perifretum from the River Scheldt and Cottus rhenanus from the Lower River Rhine system. The emergence of the hybrid lineage is correlated with new habitat adaptations that allow the expansion along river habitats that have previously not been used by Cottus. Thus the question arises, if the hybridization event facilitated the invasion of and the adaptation to such a new environment. To start tackling this question an estimate is required how much each of the parental species contributed to the hybrid genome and which chromosomal fragments became fixed. Several genomic resources had to be developed in order to map the ancestries of chromosomal fragments in the hybrid genome. As a basic genomic resource for Cottus a genetic map based on already established microsatellite markers was created. This map was compared with the physical maps of sequenced fish genomes and a high degree of conserved synteny between Cottus and Tetraodon nigroviridis and between Cottus and Gasterosteus aculeatus could be detected. These model fish genomes could then be used as a reference in the further analysis of the Cottus genome. Finally, a set of ancestry-informative markers was developed in order to determine the ancestries of chromosomal fragments in the hybrid lineage. These tools allowed to map the hybrid genome and to assess the contribution of each parental species to the hybrid lineage. 25 genomic fragments could be identified that were fixed for material from only one parental species and thus might harbor genes that are relevant for the specific adaptations in the hybrid species
