    High-Efficiency Isolated Photovoltaic Microinverter Using Wide-Band Gap Switches for Standalone and Grid-Tied Applications

    An isolated photovoltaic micro-inverter for standalone and grid-tied applications is designed and implemented to achieve high efficiency. System configuration and design considerations, including the proposed active-clamp forward-flyback resonant converter for the DC-DC stage and a dual-frequency full-bridge inverter for the DC-AC stage, are analyzed and discussed. A prototype microinverter system is built and tested. Experimental results verify the feasibility of the proposed system, which achieves 95% power conversion efficiency at full load

    Design of a modular, high step-up ratio DC–DC converter for HVDC applications integrating offshore wind power

    High-power and high-voltage gain dc-dc converters are key to high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission for offshore wind power. This paper presents an isolated ultra-high step-up dc-dc converter in matrix transformer configuration. A flyback-forward converter is adopted as the power cell and the secondary side matrix connection is introduced to increase the power level and to improve fault tolerance. Because of the modular structure of the converter, the stress on the switching devices is decreased and so is the transformer size. The proposed topology can be operated in column interleaved modes, row interleaved modes, and hybrid working modes in order to deal with the varying energy from the wind farm. Furthermore, fault-tolerant operation is also realized in several fault scenarios. A 400-W dc-dc converter with four cells is developed and experimentally tested to validate the proposed technique, which can be applied to high-power high-voltage dc power transmission

    The challenges imposed on Voltage Regulator Modules (VRM) become difficult to be achieved with the conventional multiphase buck converter commonly used on PC motherboards. For faster data transfer, a decrease in the output voltage is needed. This decrease causes small duty cycle that is accompanied by critical problems which impairs the efficiency. Therefore, these problems need to be addressed. Transformer-based non-isolated topologies are not new approaches to extend the duty cycle and avoid the associated drawbacks. High leakage, several added components and complicated driving and control schemes are some of the trade-offs to expand the duty cycle. The objective of this work is to present a new dc-dc buck-based topology, which extends the duty cycle with minimum drawbacks by adding two transformers that can be integrated to decrease the size and two switches with zero voltage switching (ZVS). Another issue addressed in this thesis is deriving a small signal model for a two-input two-phase buck converter as an introduction to a new evolving field of multi-input converters

    Efficient, High Power Density, Modular Wide Band-gap Based Converters for Medium Voltage Application

    Recent advances in semiconductor technology have accelerated developments in medium-voltage direct-current (MVDC) power system transmission and distribution. A DC-DC converter is widely considered to be the most important technology for future DC networks. Wide band-gap (WBG) power devices (i.e. Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Gallium Nitride (GaN) devices) have paved the way for improving the efficiency and power density of power converters by means of higher switching frequencies with lower conduction and switching losses compared to their Silicon (Si) counterparts. However, due to rapid variation of the voltage and current, di/dt and dv/dt, to fully utilize the advantages of the Wide-bandgap semiconductors, more focus is needed to design the printed circuit boards (PCB) in terms of minimizing the parasitic components, which impacts efficiency. The aim of this dissertation is to study the technical challenges associated with the implementation of WBG devices and propose different power converter topologies for MVDC applications. Ship power system with MVDC distribution is attracting widespread interest due to higher reliability and reduced fuel consumption. Also, since the charging time is a barrier for adopting the electric vehicles, increasing the voltage level of the dc bus to achieve the fast charging is considered to be the most important solution to address this concern. Moreover, raising the voltage level reduces the size and cost of cables in the car. Employing MVDC system in the power grid offers secure, flexible and efficient power flow. It is shown that to reach optimal performance in terms of low package inductance and high slew rate of switches, designing a PCB with low common source inductance, power loop inductance, and gate-driver loop are essential. Compared with traditional power converters, the proposed circuits can reduce the voltage stress on switches and diodes, as well as the input current ripple. A lower voltage stress allows the designer to employ the switches and diodes with lower on-resistance RDS(ON) and forward voltage drop, respectively. Consequently, more efficient power conversion system can be achieved. Moreover, the proposed converters offer a high voltage gain that helps the power switches with smaller duty-cycle, which leads to lower current and voltage stress across them. To verify the proposed concept and prove the correctness of the theoretical analysis, the laboratory prototype of the converters using WBG devices were implemented. The proposed converters can provide energy conversion with an efficiency of 97% feeding the nominal load, which is 2% more than the efficiency of the-state-of-the-art converters. Besides the efficiency, shrinking the current ripple leads to 50% size reduction of the input filter inductors

    Ultrahigh step-up dc-dc converter for distributed generation by three Degrees of Freedom (3DoF) approach

    This paper proposes a novel dc-dc converter topology to achieve an ultrahigh step-up ratio while maintaining a high conversion efficiency. It adopts a three degree of freedom approach in the circuit design. It also demonstrates the flexibility of the proposed converter to combine with the features of modularity, electrical isolation, soft-switching, low voltage stress on switching devices, and is thus considered to be an improved topology over traditional dc-dc converters. New control strategies including the two-section output voltage control and cell idle control are also developed to improve the converter performance. With the cell idle control, the secondary winding inductance of the idle module is bypassed to decrease its power loss. A 400-W dc-dc converter is prototyped and tested to verify the proposed techniques, in addition to a simulation study. The step-up conversion ratio can reach 1:14 with a peak efficiency of 94% and the proposed techniques can be applied to a wide range of high voltage and high power distributed generation and dc power transmission

    Study of a Symmetrical LLC Dual-Active Bridge Resonant Converter Topology for Battery Storage Systems

    A symmetrical LLC resonant converter topology with a fixed-frequency quasi-triple phase-shift modulation method is proposed for battery-powered electric traction systems with extensions to other battery storage systems. Operation of the converter with these methods yields two unique transfer characteristics and is dependent on the switching frequency. The converter exhibits several desirable features: 1) load-independent buck-boost voltage conversion when operated at the low-impedance resonant frequency, allowing for dc-link voltage regulation, zero-voltage switching across a wide load range, and intrinsic load transient resilience; 2) power flow control when operated outside the low-impedance resonance for integrated battery charging; 3) and simple operational mode selection based on needed functionality with only a single control variable per mode. Derivation of the transfer characteristics for three operation cases using exponential Fourier series coefficients is presented. Pre-design evaluation of the S-LLC converter is presented using these analytical methods and corroborated through simulation. Furthermore, the construction of a rapid-prototyping magnetics design tool developed for high-frequency transformer designs inclusive of leakage inductance, which is leveraged to create the magnetic elements needed for this work. Two 2kW prototypes of the proposed topology are constructed to validate the analysis, with one prototype having a transformer incorporating the series resonant inductance and secondary clamp inductance into the transformer leakage and magnetizing inductance, respectively. A test bench is presented to validate the analysis methods and proposed multi-operational control scheme. Theoretical and experimental results are compared, thus demonstrating the feasibility of the new multi-mode operation scheme of the S-LLC converter topology

    Novel design techniques and control schemes for higher efficiency switched-mode power converters

    This thesis details novel control schemes and design techniques with the aim of improving the performance of several switched-mode power converter topologies. These improvements include higher steady-state and transient efficiencies for hard-switching converters and the automatic current limiting provision for LLC resonant converters. The thesis initially attempts to use linear closed-loop controllers to improve the transient response of synchronous buck converters, enabling them to be designed with a lower open-loop bandwidth so that the system can achieve higher efficiency. Three types of controllers were investigated viz: the PID, the state-feedback and the predictive controller. All three controllers exhibit similar step responses, which are the maximum transient responses achievable by the linear controllers with the given requirements. The thesis then examines the parallel converter (i.e. a converter with two parallel connected power modules (PMs)) in detail with a view to improve the efficiency and to minimise the current ripple experienced by the output capacitor. Two control schemes and a design technique for the parallel converter are proposed, to simultaneously improve its efficiency and power density. The parallel converter in this research consists of two non-identical rated PMs (termed main PM and auxiliary PM), with the transient response requirement allocated to the auxiliary PM, thereby allowing the main PM to operate at a lower frequency for higher steady-state efficiency. The first control scheme activates the auxiliary PM only when a pre-determined deviation in load/output voltage is exceeded under a load step. Thus, eliminating the losses contributed by the low efficiency auxiliary PM for small load step changes. The second control scheme shapes the auxiliary PM inductor current to be equal and opposite to the main PM current ripple, which when combined reduce the current ripple as experienced by the output filter capacitor, thereby allowing a lower value (and hence physically smaller) capacitor to be selected for higher power density. In order to improve the converter's steady-state efficiency further, the minimum load condition is allocated to the auxiliary PM in the new design technique. These allow both the main PM inductance and its switching frequency to be lower for higher efficiency. In recent years, the LLC has received much attention owing to its favourable operating characteristics including high efficiency and high power density. Usually one chooses to operate at or very close to the load independent point (LIP) since very little control effort is required to regulate the converter's output voltage in response to changes in the load. However under fault conditions where the load tends towards a short circuit, excessive currents can flow and thus control action need to be taken to protect both the converter and the load. The final topic of the thesis hence studies the characteristics of an LLC resonant converter with current-limiting capacitor-diode clamp and develops a new equivalent circuit model to predict the behaviour under overload conditions. A detailed analysis of the converter is presented using the proposed model, from which a design methodology is derived allowing the optimum circuit components to be selected to achieve the required current limiting/protection characteristics

    Local control of multiple module converters with ratings-based load sharing

    Multiple module dc-dc converters show promise in meeting the increasing demands on ef- ficiency and performance of energy conversion systems. In order to increase reliability, maintainability, and expandability, a modular approach in converter design is often desired. This thesis proposes local control of multiple module converters as an alternative to using a central controller or master controller. A power ratings-based load sharing scheme that allows for uniform and non-uniform sharing is introduced. Focus is given to an input series, output parallel (ISOP) configuration and modules with a push-pull topology. Sensorless current mode (SCM) control is digitally implemented on separate controllers for each of the modules. The benefits of interleaving the switching signals of the distributed modules is presented. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate stable, ratings-based sharing in an ISOP converter with a high conversion ratio for both uniform and non-uniform load sharing cases

    Fault-Tolerant Converter with a Modular Structure for HVDC Power Transmitting Applications

    For the high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) power transmission system of offshore wind power, dc/dc converters are the potential solution to collect the power generated by off-shore wind farms to HVDC terminals. The converters operate with high-voltage gain, high efficiency, and fault tolerance over a wide range of operating conditions. In this paper, an isolated ultrahigh step-up dc/dc converter with a scalable modular structure is proposed for HVDC offshore wind power collection. A flyback-forward converter is employed as the power cell to form the expandable electrically isolated modular dc/dc converter. The duty ratio and phase-shift angle control are also developed for the proposed converter. Fault-tolerant characteristics of the converter are illustrated through the redundancy operation and fault-ride-through tests. Redundancy operation is designed to maintain high operation efficiency of the converters and fault-ride-through operation improves the converter reliability under harsh operating conditions. Analytical studies are carried out, and a 750-W prototype with three modular cells is built and experimentally tested to verify the performance of the proposed modular dc/dc converter
