A hybrid EKF and switching PSO algorithm for joint state and parameter estimation of lateral flow immunoassay models
This is the post-print version of the Article. The official published can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2012 IEEEIn this paper, a hybrid extended Kalman filter (EKF) and switching particle swarm optimization (SPSO) algorithm is proposed for jointly estimating both the parameters and states of the lateral flow immunoassay model through available short time-series measurement. Our proposed method generalizes the well-known EKF algorithm by imposing physical constraints on the system states. Note that the state constraints are encountered very often in practice that give rise to considerable difficulties in system analysis and design. The main purpose of this paper is to handle the dynamic modeling problem with state constraints by combining the extended Kalman filtering and constrained optimization algorithms via the maximization probability method. More specifically, a recently developed SPSO algorithm is used to cope with the constrained optimization problem by converting it into an unconstrained optimization one through adding a penalty term to the objective function. The proposed algorithm is then employed to simultaneously identify the parameters and states of a lateral flow immunoassay model. It is shown that the proposed algorithm gives much improved performance over the traditional EKF method. This work was supported in part by the International Science and Technology Cooperation Project of China under Grant

Optimal analog wavelet bases construction using hybrid optimization algorithm
An approach for the construction of optimal analog wavelet bases is presented. First, the definition of an analog wavelet is given. Based on the definition and the least-squares error criterion, a general framework for designing optimal analog wavelet bases is established, which is one of difficult nonlinear constrained optimization problems. Then, to solve this problem, a hybrid algorithm by combining chaotic map particle swarm optimization (CPSO) with local sequential quadratic programming (SQP) is proposed. CPSO is an improved PSO in which the saw tooth chaotic map is used to raise its global search ability. CPSO is a global optimizer to search the estimates of the global solution, while the SQP is employed for the local search and refining the estimates. Benefiting from good global search ability of CPSO and powerful local search ability of SQP, a high-precision global optimum in this problem can be gained. Finally, a series of optimal analog wavelet bases are constructed using the hybrid algorithm. The proposed method is tested for various wavelet bases and the improved performance is compared with previous works.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
DIFFERENTIAL EVOLUTION FOR OPTIMIZATION OF PID GAIN IN ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE MACHINING CONTROL SYSTEM
ABSTRACT
PID controller of servo control system maintains the gap between Electrode and workpiece in Electrical Dis- charge Machining (EDM). Capability of the controller is significant since machining process is a stochastic phenomenon and physical behaviour of the discharge is unpredictable. Therefore, a Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controller using Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm is designed and applied to an EDM servo actuator system in order to find suitable gain parameters. Simulation results verify the capabilities and effectiveness of the DE algorithm to search the best configuration of PID gain to maintain the electrode position.

Sparsity-Based Error Detection in DC Power Flow State Estimation
This paper presents a new approach for identifying the measurement error in
the DC power flow state estimation problem. The proposed algorithm exploits the
singularity of the impedance matrix and the sparsity of the error vector by
posing the DC power flow problem as a sparse vector recovery problem that
leverages the structure of the power system and uses -norm minimization
for state estimation. This approach can provably compute the measurement errors
exactly, and its performance is robust to the arbitrary magnitudes of the
measurement errors. Hence, the proposed approach can detect the noisy elements
if the measurements are contaminated with additive white Gaussian noise plus
sparse noise with large magnitude. The effectiveness of the proposed
sparsity-based decomposition-DC power flow approach is demonstrated on the IEEE
118-bus and 300-bus test systems
Robotic Wireless Sensor Networks
In this chapter, we present a literature survey of an emerging, cutting-edge,
and multi-disciplinary field of research at the intersection of Robotics and
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) which we refer to as Robotic Wireless Sensor
Networks (RWSN). We define a RWSN as an autonomous networked multi-robot system
that aims to achieve certain sensing goals while meeting and maintaining
certain communication performance requirements, through cooperative control,
learning and adaptation. While both of the component areas, i.e., Robotics and
WSN, are very well-known and well-explored, there exist a whole set of new
opportunities and research directions at the intersection of these two fields
which are relatively or even completely unexplored. One such example would be
the use of a set of robotic routers to set up a temporary communication path
between a sender and a receiver that uses the controlled mobility to the
advantage of packet routing. We find that there exist only a limited number of
articles to be directly categorized as RWSN related works whereas there exist a
range of articles in the robotics and the WSN literature that are also relevant
to this new field of research. To connect the dots, we first identify the core
problems and research trends related to RWSN such as connectivity,
localization, routing, and robust flow of information. Next, we classify the
existing research on RWSN as well as the relevant state-of-the-arts from
robotics and WSN community according to the problems and trends identified in
the first step. Lastly, we analyze what is missing in the existing literature,
and identify topics that require more research attention in the future
Solving Multi-Objective Voltage Stability Constrained Power Transfer Capability Problem using Evolutionary Computation
Competitive market forces and the ever-growing load demand are two of the key issues that cause power systems to operate closer to their system stability boundaries. Open access has since introduced competition and therefore promotes inter-regional electrical power trades. However, the economic flows of electrical energy between interconnected regions are usually constrained by system physical limits, e.g. transmission lines capacity and generation active/reactive power capability etc. As such, there is a limitation to the capacity of electrical power that regions can export or import. This maximum allowable electrical power transfer is normally referred to as Total Transfer Capability (TTC). It is critical to understand that TTC does not necessarily represent a safe and reliable amount of inter-regional power transfer as one or more operational limits are usually binding when quantifying TTC. Hence, it is of interest that power system stability issues are being considered during power transfer capability assessment in order to provide a more appropriate and secure power transfer level. The aim of this paper is to formulate an Optimal Power Flow (OPF) algorithm, which is capable of evaluating inter-area power transfer capability considering mathematically-complex voltage collapse margins. Through a multi-objective optimization setup, the proposed OPF-based approach can reveal the nonlinear relationships, i.e. the pareto-optimal front, between transfer capability and voltage stability margins. The feasibility of this approach has been intensively tested on a 3-machine 9-bus and the IEEE 118-bus systems
Robust Coordinated Designing of PSS and UPFC Damping Controller
This paper presents the simultaneous coordinated designing of the UPFC robust power oscillation damping controller and the conventional power system stabilizer. On the basis of the linearized Phillips-Herffron model, the coordinated design problem of PSS and UPFC damping controllers over a wide range of loading conditions and system configurations is formulated as an optimization problem with the eigenvalue-based multiobjective function which is solved by a particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) that has a strong ability to find the most optimistic results. The stabilizers are tuned to simultaneously shift the undamped electromechanical modes to a prescribed zone in the s-plane. To ensure the robustness of the proposed simultaneous coordinated controllers tuning, the design process takes into account a wide range of operating conditions and system configurations. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through eigenvalue analysis, nonlinear time-domain simulation and some performance indices studies under various disturbance conditions of over a wide range of loading conditions. The results of these studies show that the PSO based simultaneous coordinated controller has an excellent capability in damping power system oscillations and enhance greatly the dynamic stability of the power system
