    Integral global sliding mode guidance for impact angle control

    This Correspondence proposes a new guidance law based on integral sliding mode control (ISMC) technique for maneuvering target interception with impact angle constraint. A time-varying function weighted line-of-sight (LOS) error dynamics, representing the nominal guidance performance, is introduced first. The proposed guidance law is derived by utilizing ISMC to follow the desired error dynamics. The convergence of the guidance law developed is supported by Lyapunov stability. Simulations with extensive comparisons explicitly demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach

    Optimal impact angle guidance for exo-atmospheric interception utilizing gravitational effect

    This paper aims to develop a new optimal intercept angle guidance law for exo-atmospheric interception by utilizing gravity. A finite-time optimal regulation problem is formulated by considering the instantaneous zero-effort-miss (ZEM) and the intercept angle error as the system states. The analytical guidance command is then derived based on Schwarz's inequality approach and Lagrange multiplier concept. Capturability analysis using instantaneous linear time-invariant system concept is also presented to provide better insights of the proposed guidance law. Theoretical analysis reveals that the proposed optimal guidance law encompasses previously suggested optimal impact angle constrained guidance laws. Numerical simulations with some comparisons clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed guidance law

    Sensor-based robust incremental three-dimensional guidance law with terminal angle constraint

    In this work, a robust incremental three-dimensional (3D) guidance law is proposed considering terminal angle constraint against maneuvering targets. As a stepping stone, the line-of-sight (LOS) tracking error dynamics is employed for the 3D guidance law design. A sliding variable is constructed such that its first-order derivative excludes the relative range in the perturbation, which avoids the unboundedness of system perturbation induced by target maneuvers near collision. A time-varying version of the sliding variable is designed to accelerate convergence of the LOS tracking errors and avoid large initial sliding variables. Then, two guidance laws are derived as a benchmark via the nonlinear dynamic inversion (NDI)-based sliding mode control (NDI-SMC) and NDI-based time-varying sliding mode control (NDI-TVSMC), respectively. To further improve guidance robustness with reduced system perturbation, the sensor-based incremental nonlinear dynamic inversion (INDI) control is used to design the INDI-SMC-based and INDI-TVSMC-based guidance laws. The sensor-based guidance laws exploit the LOS angular acceleration and guidance command output at the latest step, which result in smaller guidance gains to reject the perturbation than the NDI guidance laws. Numerical simulations in various cases and comparison studies are conducted to verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method

    Visual Servoing in Robotics

    Visual servoing is a well-known approach to guide robots using visual information. Image processing, robotics, and control theory are combined in order to control the motion of a robot depending on the visual information extracted from the images captured by one or several cameras. With respect to vision issues, a number of issues are currently being addressed by ongoing research, such as the use of different types of image features (or different types of cameras such as RGBD cameras), image processing at high velocity, and convergence properties. As shown in this book, the use of new control schemes allows the system to behave more robustly, efficiently, or compliantly, with fewer delays. Related issues such as optimal and robust approaches, direct control, path tracking, or sensor fusion are also addressed. Additionally, we can currently find visual servoing systems being applied in a number of different domains. This book considers various aspects of visual servoing systems, such as the design of new strategies for their application to parallel robots, mobile manipulators, teleoperation, and the application of this type of control system in new areas

    Autonomous Flight, Fault, and Energy Management of the Flying Fish Solar-Powered Seaplane.

    The Flying Fish autonomous unmanned seaplane is designed and built for persistent ocean surveillance. Solar energy harvesting and always-on autonomous control and guidance are required to achieve unattended long-term operation. This thesis describes the Flying Fish avionics and software systems that enable the system to plan, self-initiate, and autonomously execute drift-flight cycles necessary to maintain a designated watch circle subject to environmentally influenced drift. We first present the avionics and flight software architecture developed for the unique challenges of an autonomous energy-harvesting seaplane requiring the system to be: waterproof, robust over a variety of sea states, and lightweight for flight. Seaplane kinematics and dynamics are developed based on conventional aircraft and watercraft and upon empirical flight test data. These models serve as the basis for development of flight control and guidance strategies which take the form of a cyclic multi-mode guidance protocol that smoothly transitions between nested gain-scheduled proportional-derivative feedback control laws tuned for the trim conditions of each flight mode. A fault-tolerant airspeed sensing system is developed in response to elevated failure rates arising from pitot probe water ingestion in the test environment. The fault-tolerance strategy utilizes sensor characteristics and signal energy to combine redundant sensor measurements in a weighted voting strategy, handling repeated failures, sensor recovery, non-homogenous sensors, and periods of complete sensing failure. Finally, a graph-based mission planner combines models of global solar energy, local ocean-currents, and wind with flight-verified/derived aircraft models to provide an energy-aware flight planning tool. An NP-hard asymmetric multi-visit traveling salesman planning problem is posed that integrates vehicle performance and environment models using energy as the primary cost metric. A novel A* search heuristic is presented to improve search efficiency relative to uniform cost search. A series of cases studies are conducted with surface and airborne goals for various times of day and for multi-day scenarios. Energy-optimal solutions are identified except in cases where energy harvesting produces multiple comparable-cost plans via negative-cost cycles. The always-on cyclic guidance/control system, airspeed sensor fault management algorithm, and the nested-TSP heuristic for A* are all critical innovation required to solve the posed research challenges.Ph.D.Aerospace EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     A novel dual-spin actuation mechanism for small calibre, spin stabilised, guided projectiles

Due to hardware limitations, conventional actuators and meth ods are unable to provide satisfactory control at such high frequencies. With the reduced volume for control hardware and increased financial cost, incorporating traditional guid ance methods into small-calibre projectiles is inherently difficult. This work presents a novel method of projectile control which addresses these issues and conducts a systems level analysis of the underlying actuation mechanism. The design is shown to be a viable alternative to traditional control methods, Firstly, a 7 Degree-of-Freedom (DoF) dynamic model is created for dual-spin pro jectiles, including aerodynamic coefficients. The stability of dual-spin projectiles, gov erned by the gyroscopic and dynamic stability factors is given, discussed and unified across available literature. The model is implemented in a Matlab/Simulink simulation environ ment, which is in turn validated against a range of academic literature and experimental test data. The novel design and fundamental operating principle are presented. The actuation mechanism (AM) is then mathematically formulated from both a velocity change (∆V ) and a lateral acceleration (a˜) perspective. A set of axioms are declared and verified using the 7-DoF model, showing that the inherently discrete system behaviour can be controlled continuously via these control variables, ∆V or a˜. Control state switching is simplified to be instantaneous, then expanded to be generically characterised by an arbitrarily complex mathematical function. A detailed investigation, parametric analysis and sensitivity study is undertaken to understand the system behaviour. A Monte Carlo procedure is described, which is used to compare the correction cap abilities of different guidance laws (GLs). A bespoke Zero-Effort-Miss (ZEM) based GLis synthesised from the mathematical formulation of the AM, with innately more know ledge of the system behaviour, which allows superior error correction. This bespoke GL is discussed in detail, a parametric study is undertaken, and both the GL parameters and PID controller gains are optimised using a genetic algorithm. Artificial Intelligence (AI) Reinforcement learning methods are used to emulate a GL, as well as controlling the AM and operating as a GL, simultaneously. The novel GLs are compared against a traditional proportional navigation GL in a nominal system and all GLs were able to control the AMs, reducing the miss distance to a satisfactory margin. The ZEM-based GL provided superior correction to the AI GL, which in turn provided superior correction over proportional navigation. Example CAD models are shown, and the stability analysis is conducted on the geometry. The CAD model is then used in CFD simulations to determine aerodynamic coefficients for use in the 7-DoF dynamic model. The novel control method was able to reduce the 95% dispersion diameter of a traditional ballistic 7.62mm projectile from 70mm to 33mm. Statistical data analysis showed there was no significant correlation or bias present in either the nominal or 7-DoF dispersion patterns.
