    Adaptive Discrete Second Order Sliding Mode Control with Application to Nonlinear Automotive Systems

    Sliding mode control (SMC) is a robust and computationally efficient model-based controller design technique for highly nonlinear systems, in the presence of model and external uncertainties. However, the implementation of the conventional continuous-time SMC on digital computers is limited, due to the imprecisions caused by data sampling and quantization, and the chattering phenomena, which results in high frequency oscillations. One effective solution to minimize the effects of data sampling and quantization imprecisions is the use of higher order sliding modes. To this end, in this paper, a new formulation of an adaptive second order discrete sliding mode control (DSMC) is presented for a general class of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) uncertain nonlinear systems. Based on a Lyapunov stability argument and by invoking the new Invariance Principle, not only the asymptotic stability of the controller is guaranteed, but also the adaptation law is derived to remove the uncertainties within the nonlinear plant dynamics. The proposed adaptive tracking controller is designed and tested in real-time for a highly nonlinear control problem in spark ignition combustion engine during transient operating conditions. The simulation and real-time processor-in-the-loop (PIL) test results show that the second order single-input single-output (SISO) DSMC can improve the tracking performances up to 90%, compared to a first order SISO DSMC under sampling and quantization imprecisions, in the presence of modeling uncertainties. Moreover, it is observed that by converting the engine SISO controllers to a MIMO structure, the overall controller performance can be enhanced by 25%, compared to the SISO second order DSMC, because of the dynamics coupling consideration within the MIMO DSMC formulation.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 1 tabl

    EASILY VERIFIABLE CONTROLLER DESIGN WITH APPLICATION TO AUTOMOTIVE POWERTRAINS

    Bridging the gap between designed and implemented model-based controllers is a major challenge in the design cycle of industrial controllers. This gap is mainly created due to (i) digital implementation of controller software that introduces sampling and quantization imprecisions via analog-to-digital conversion (ADC), and (ii) uncertainties in the modeled plant’s dynamics, which directly propagate through the controller structure. The failure to identify and handle these implementation and model uncertainties results in undesirable controller performance and costly iterative loops for completing the controller verification and validation (V&V) process. This PhD dissertation develops a novel theoretical framework to design controllers that are robust to implementation imprecision and uncertainties within the models. The proposed control framework is generic and applicable to a wide range of nonlinear control systems. The final outcome from this study is an uncertainty/imprecisions adaptive, easily verifiable, and robust control theory framework that minimizes V&V iterations in the design of complex nonlinear control systems. The concept of sliding mode controls (SMC) is used in this study as the baseline to construct an easily verifiable model-based controller design framework. SMC is a robust and computationally efficient controller design technique for highly nonlinear systems, in the presence of model and external uncertainties. The SMC structure allows for further modification to improve the controller robustness against implementation imprecisions, and compensate for the uncertainties within the plant model. First, the conventional continuous-time SMC design is improved by: (i) developing a reduced-order controller based on a novel model order reduction technique. The reduced order SMC shows better performance, since it uses a balanced realization form of the plant model and reduces the destructive internal interaction among different states of the system. (ii) developing an uncertainty-adaptive SMC with improved robustness against implementation imprecisions. Second, the continuous-time SMC design is converted to a discrete-time SMC (DSMC). The baseline first order DSMC structure is improved by: (i) inclusion of the ADC imprecisions knowledge via a generic sampling and quantization uncertainty prediction mechanism which enables higher robustness against implementation imprecisions, (ii) deriving the adaptation laws via a Lyapunov stability analysis to overcome uncertainties within the plant model, and (iii) developing a second order adaptive DSMC with predicted ADC imprecisions, which provides faster and more robust performance under modeling and implementation imprecisions, in comparison with the first order DSMC. The developed control theories from this PhD dissertation have been evaluated in real-time for two automotive powertrain case studies, including highly nonlinear combustion engine, and linear DC motor control problems. Moreover, the DSMC with predicted ADC imprecisions is experimentally tested and verified on an electronic air throttle body testbed for model-based position tracking purpose

    Diesel engine airpath control is crucial for modern engine development due to increasingly stringent emission regulations. This thesis aims to develop and validate a exible and robust control approach to this problem for speci cally heavy-duty engines. It focuses on estimation and control algorithms that are implementable to the current and next generation commercial electronic control units (ECU). To this end, targeting the control units in service, a data driven disturbance observer (DOB) is developed and applied for mass air ow (MAF) and manifold absolute pressure (MAP) tracking control via exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve and variable geometry turbine (VGT) vane. Its performance bene ts are demonstrated on the physical engine model for concept evaluation. The proposed DOB integrated with a discrete-time sliding mode controller is applied to the serial level engine control unit. Real engine performance is validated with the legal emission test cycle (WHTC - World Harmonized Transient Cycle) for heavy-duty engines and comparison with a commercially available controller is performed, and far better tracking results are obtained. Further studies are conducted in order to utilize capabilities of the next generation control units. Gaussian process regression (GPR) models are popular in automotive industry especially for emissions modeling but have not found widespread applications in airpath control yet. This thesis presents a GPR modeling of diesel engine airpath components as well as controller designs and their applications based on the developed models.     Development of adaptive control methodologies and algorithms for nonlinear dynamic systems based on u-control framework

    Inspired by the U-model based control system design (or called U-control system design), this study is mainly divided into three parts. The first one is a U-model based control system for unstable non-minimum phase system. Pulling theorems are proposed to apply zeros pulling filters and poles pulling filters to pass the unstable non-minimum phase characteristics of the plant model/system. The zeros pulling filters and poles pulling filters derive from a customised desired minimum phase plant model. The remaining controller design can be any classic control systems or U-model based control system. The difference between classic control systems and U-model based control system for unstable non-minimum phase will be shown in the case studies.Secondly, the U-model framework is proposed to integrate the direct model reference adaptive control with MIT normalised rules for nonlinear dynamic systems. The U-model based direct model reference adaptive control is defined as an enhanced direct model reference adaptive control expanding the application range from linear system to nonlinear system. The estimated parameter of the nonlinear dynamic system will be placement as the estimated gain of a customised linear virtual plant model with MIT normalised rules. The customised linear virtual plant model is the same form as the reference model. Moreover, the U-model framework is design for the nonlinear dynamic system within the root inversion.Thirdly, similar to the structure of the U-model based direct model reference adaptive control with MIT normalised rules, the U-model based direct model reference adaptive control with Lyapunov algorithms proposes a linear virtual plant model as well, estimated and adapted the particular parameters as the estimated gain which of the nonlinear plant model by Lyapunov algorithms. The root inversion such as Newton-Ralphson algorithm provides the simply and concise method to obtain the inversion of the nonlinear system without the estimated gain. The proposed U-model based direct control system design approach is applied to develop the controller for a nonlinear system to implement the linear adaptive control. The computational experiments are presented to validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed U-model based direct model reference adaptive control approach and stabilise with satisfied performance as applying for the linear plant model

    On the experimental analysis of single input single output control of yaw rate and sideslip angle

    Electric vehicles with individually controlled drivetrains allow torque-vectoring, which improves vehicle safety and drivability. This paper investigates a new approach to the concurrent control of yaw rate and sideslip angle. The proposed controller is a simple single input single output (SISO) yaw rate controller, in which the reference yaw rate depends on the vehicle handling requirements, and the actual sideslip angle. The sideslip contribution enhances safety, as it provides a corrective action in critical situations, e.g., in case of oversteer during extreme cornering on a low friction surface. The proposed controller is experimentally assessed on an electric vehicle demonstrator, along two maneuvers with quickly variable tire-road friction coefficient. Different longitudinal locations of the sideslip angle used as control variable are compared during the experiments. Results show that: i) the proposed SISO approach provides significant improvements with respect to the vehicle without torque-vectoring, and the controlled vehicle with a reference yaw rate solely based on the handling requirements for high-friction maneuvering; and ii) the control of the rear axle sideslip angle provides better performance than the control of the sideslip angle at the centre of gravity

    Development of U-model enhanced nonlinear dynamic control systems —Framework, algorithms and validation

    This study aims to develop the classical model-based U-control design framework to enhance its robustness and reduce its dependence on model accuracy. By absorbing the design concepts of other advanced control algorithms, firstly, based on the discrete-time U-control algorithm, a continuous-time (CT) U-model based dynamic inversion algorithm is proposed. Then the CT U-control system design procedures are presented and explained step by step with numerical and simulation demonstrations of the linear and nonlinear U-control system design examples. Secondly, the U-control algorithm develops two mainstream nonlinear robust control algorithms, disturbances suppression and disturbances compensation, while maintaining its system dynamic cancellation characteristics, including two-degree-of-freedom U-model-based internal model control (UTDF-IMC), Disturbance observer-based U-control (DOBUC), sliding mode enhanced U-control (U-SMC) and U-model based double sliding mode control (UDSMC) algorithms. At the same time this study first developed and applied the U-control method to a practical industry application: robust quadrotor trajectory tracking control. The proposed UDSMC method and multiple-input and multiple-output extended-state-observer (MIMO-ESO) established the quadrotor flight control system. The difficulties associated with quadrotor velocity measurement disturbances and uncertain aerodynamics are successfully addressed in this control design. A rigorous theoretical analysis has been carried out to determine whether the proposed control system can achieve stable trajectory tracking performance, and a comparative real-time experimental study has also been carried out to verify the better effectiveness of the proposed control system than the classical SMC and built-in PID control system. This study is clearly novel as the methods and experiments it proposed have not been researched before

    Dual adaptive dynamic control of mobile robots using neural networks

    This paper proposes two novel dual adaptive neural control schemes for the dynamic control of nonholonomic mobile robots. The two schemes are developed in discrete time, and the robot's nonlinear dynamic functions are assumed to be unknown. Gaussian radial basis function and sigmoidal multilayer perceptron neural networks are used for function approximation. In each scheme, the unknown network parameters are estimated stochastically in real time, and no preliminary offline neural network training is used. In contrast to other adaptive techniques hitherto proposed in the literature on mobile robots, the dual control laws presented in this paper do not rely on the heuristic certainty equivalence property but account for the uncertainty in the estimates. This results in a major improvement in tracking performance, despite the plant uncertainty and unmodeled dynamics. Monte Carlo simulation and statistical hypothesis testing are used to illustrate the effectiveness of the two proposed stochastic controllers as applied to the trajectory-tracking problem of a differentially driven wheeled mobile robot.peer-reviewe
