A Robust Consensus Algorithm for Current Sharing and Voltage Regulation in DC Microgrids

    Get PDF
In this paper a novel distributed control algorithm for current sharing and voltage regulation in Direct Current (DC) microgrids is proposed. The DC microgrid is composed of several Distributed Generation units (DGUs), including Buck converters and current loads. The considered model permits an arbitrary network topology and is affected by unknown load demand and modelling uncertainties. The proposed control strategy exploits a communication network to achieve proportional current sharing using a consensus-like algorithm. Voltage regulation is achieved by constraining the system to a suitable manifold. Two robust control strategies of Sliding Mode (SM) type are developed to reach the desired manifold in a finite time. The proposed control scheme is formally analyzed, proving the achievement of proportional current sharing, while guaranteeing that the weighted average voltage of the microgrid is identical to the weighted average of the voltage references.Comment: 12 page

Virtual Oscillator Control of Multiple Solar PV Inverters for Microgrid Applications

    Get PDF
This paper proposes the inverter control strategy for multiple solar PV generation sources based on the two-stage converters with a combination of the modified virtual oscillator control (VOC) and the cascaded sliding mode control (SMC). With this proposed control strategy, the load power-sharing in proportion to the inverter rating is guaranteed when the solar PV output satisfies the power-sharing requirement. On the other hand, the control algorithm autonomously forces the solar PV to operate at the maximum power point if the solar PV output is lower than the power-sharing requirement. Various operating scenarios have been simulated to appreciate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme for ensuring the load-power sharing and maintaining the voltage and frequency stability of the islanded microgrid containing a 100% solar PV generation

Review on Multi-Objective Control Strategies for Distributed Generation on Inverter-Based Microgrids

[EN] Microgrids have emerged as a solution to address new challenges in power systems with the integration of distributed energy resources (DER). Inverter-based microgrids (IBMG) need to implement proper control systems to avoid stability and reliability issues. Thus, several researchers have introduced multi-objective control strategies for distributed generation on IBMG. This paper presents a review of the different approaches that have been proposed by several authors of multi-objective control. This work describes the main features of the inverter as a key component of microgrids. Details related to accomplishing efficient generation from a control systems' view have been observed. This study addresses the potential of multi-objective control to overcome conflicting objectives with balanced results. Finally, this paper shows future trends in control objectives and discussion of the different multi-objective approaches.

Electric Vehicles Charging Stations’ Architectures, Criteria, Power Converters, and Control Strategies in Microgrids

Electric Vehicles (EV) usage is increasing over the last few years due to a rise in fossil fuel prices and the rate of increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The EV charging stations are powered by the existing utility power grid systems, increasing the stress on the utility grid and the load demand at the distribution side. The DC grid-based EV charging is more efficient than the AC distribution because of its higher reliability, power conversion efficiency, simple interfacing with renewable energy sources (RESs), and integration of energy storage units (ESU). The RES-generated power storage in local ESU is an alternative solution for managing the utility grid demand. In addition, to maintain the EV charging demand at the microgrid levels, energy management and control strategies must carefully power the EV battery charging unit. Also, charging stations require dedicated converter topologies, control strategies and need to follow the levels and standards. Based on the EV, ESU, and RES accessibility, the different types of microgrids architecture and control strategies are used to ensure the optimum operation at the EV charging point. Based on the above said merits, this review paper presents the different RES-connected architecture and control strategies used in EV charging stations. This study highlights the importance of different charging station architectures with the current power converter topologies proposed in the literature. In addition, the comparison of the microgrid-based charging station architecture with its energy management, control strategies, and charging converter controls are also presented. The different levels and types of the charging station used for EV charging, in addition to controls and connectors used in the charging station, are discussed. The experiment-based energy management strategy is developed for controlling the power flow among the available sources and charging terminals for the effective utilization of generated renewable power. The main motive of the EMS and its control is to maximize usage of RES consumption. This review also provides the challenges and opportunities for EV charging, considering selecting charging stations in the conclusion.publishedVersio
