    Second-order SM approach to SISO time-delay system output tracking

    A fully linearizable single-input-single-output relative-degree n system with an output time delay is considered in this paper. Using the approach of Pade approximation, system center approach, and second-order sliding-mode (SM) control, we have obtained good output tracking results. The Smith predictor is used to compensate the difference between the actual delayed output and its approximation. A second-order supertwisting SM observer observes the disturbance in the plant. A nonlinear example is studied to show the effect of this methodology

    Yaw Rate and Sideslip Angle Control Through Single Input Single Output Direct Yaw Moment Control

    Electric vehicles with independently controlled drivetrains allow torque vectoring, which enhances active safety and handling qualities. This article proposes an approach for the concurrent control of yaw rate and sideslip angle based on a single-input single-output (SISO) yaw rate controller. With the SISO formulation, the reference yaw rate is first defined according to the vehicle handling requirements and is then corrected based on the actual sideslip angle. The sideslip angle contribution guarantees a prompt corrective action in critical situations such as incipient vehicle oversteer during limit cornering in low tire-road friction conditions. A design methodology in the frequency domain is discussed, including stability analysis based on the theory of switched linear systems. The performance of the control structure is assessed via: 1) phase-plane plots obtained with a nonlinear vehicle model; 2) simulations with an experimentally validated model, including multiple feedback control structures; and 3) experimental tests on an electric vehicle demonstrator along step steer maneuvers with purposely induced and controlled vehicle drift. Results show that the SISO controller allows constraining the sideslip angle within the predetermined thresholds and yields tire-road friction adaptation with all the considered feedback controllers

    Sliding-mode neuro-controller for uncertain systems

    In this paper, a method that allows for the merger of the good features of sliding-mode control and neural network (NN) design is presented. Design is performed by applying an NN to minimize the cost function that is selected to depend on the distance from the sliding-mode manifold, thus providing that the NN controller enforces sliding-mode motion in a closed-loop system. It has been proven that the selected cost function has no local minima in controller parameter space, so under certain conditions, selection of the NN weights guarantees that the global minimum is reached, and then the sliding-mode conditions are satisfied; thus, closed-loop motion is robust against parameter changes and disturbances. For controller design, the system states and the nominal value of the control input matrix are used. The design for both multiple-input-multiple-output and single-input-single-output systems is discussed. Due to the structure of the (M)ADALINE network used in control calculation, the proposed algorithm can also be interpreted as a sliding-mode-based control parameter adaptation scheme. The controller performance is verified by experimental results

    Adaptive Discrete Second Order Sliding Mode Control with Application to Nonlinear Automotive Systems

    Sliding mode control (SMC) is a robust and computationally efficient model-based controller design technique for highly nonlinear systems, in the presence of model and external uncertainties. However, the implementation of the conventional continuous-time SMC on digital computers is limited, due to the imprecisions caused by data sampling and quantization, and the chattering phenomena, which results in high frequency oscillations. One effective solution to minimize the effects of data sampling and quantization imprecisions is the use of higher order sliding modes. To this end, in this paper, a new formulation of an adaptive second order discrete sliding mode control (DSMC) is presented for a general class of multi-input multi-output (MIMO) uncertain nonlinear systems. Based on a Lyapunov stability argument and by invoking the new Invariance Principle, not only the asymptotic stability of the controller is guaranteed, but also the adaptation law is derived to remove the uncertainties within the nonlinear plant dynamics. The proposed adaptive tracking controller is designed and tested in real-time for a highly nonlinear control problem in spark ignition combustion engine during transient operating conditions. The simulation and real-time processor-in-the-loop (PIL) test results show that the second order single-input single-output (SISO) DSMC can improve the tracking performances up to 90%, compared to a first order SISO DSMC under sampling and quantization imprecisions, in the presence of modeling uncertainties. Moreover, it is observed that by converting the engine SISO controllers to a MIMO structure, the overall controller performance can be enhanced by 25%, compared to the SISO second order DSMC, because of the dynamics coupling consideration within the MIMO DSMC formulation.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 1 tabl

    In this paper a discrete-time Sliding-Mode (SM) based controller for high accuracy position control is investigated. The controller is designed for a general SISO system with nonlinearity and external disturbance. It will be shown that application of the proposed controller forces the state trajectory to be within an O(Ts 2). The proposed controller is applied to a stage driven by a piezo drive that is known to suffer from nonlinearity. As a separate idea to enhance the accuracy of the closed loop system a combination of disturbance rejection method and the SMC controller is explored and its effectiveness is experimentally demonstrated. Closed-loop experiments are presented using PID controller with and without disturbance compensation and Sliding-Mode Controller with and without disturbance compensation for the purpose of comparison

    In this paper a Discrete-Time Sliding-Mode based controller design for high accuracy motion control systems is presented. The controller is designed for a general SISO system with nonlinearity and external disturbance. Closed-Loop behavior of the general system with the proposed control and Lyapunov stability is shown and the error of the closed loop system is proven to be within an o(T2). The proposed controller is applied to a stage driven by a piezo drive that is known to suffer from hysteresis nonlinearity in the control gain. Proposed SMC controller is proven to offer chattering-free motion and rejection of the disturbances represented by hysteresis and the time variation of the piezo drive parameters.     Artificial Tune of Fuel Ratio: Design a Novel SISO Fuzzy Backstepping Adaptive Variable Structure Control

    This paper examines single input single output (SISO) chattering free variable structure control (VSC) which controller coefficient is on-line tuned by fuzzy backstepping algorithm. VSC methodology is selected as a framework to construct the control law and address the stability and robustness of the close loop system based on Lyapunove formulation. The main goal is to guarantee acceptable fuel ratio result and adjust. The proposed approach effectively combines the design technique from variable structure controller is based on Lyapunov and fuzzy estimator to estimate the nonlinearity of undefined system dynamic in backstepping controller. The input represents the function between variable structure function, error and the rate of error. The outputs represent fuel ratio, respectively. The fuzzy backstepping methodology is on-line tune the variable structure function based on adaptive methodology. The performance of the SISO VSC which controller coefficient is on-line tuned by fuzzy backstepping algorithm (FBSAVSC) is validated through comparison with VSC and proposed method.     Discrete Adaptive Second Order Sliding Mode Controller Design with Application to Automotive Control Systems with Model Uncertainties

    Sliding mode control (SMC) is a robust and computationally efficient solution for tracking control problems of highly nonlinear systems with a great deal of uncertainty. High frequency oscillations due to chattering phenomena and sensitivity to data sampling imprecisions limit the digital implementation of conventional first order continuous-time SMC. Higher order discrete SMC is an effective solution to reduce the chattering during the controller software implementation, and also overcome imprecisions due to data sampling. In this paper, a new adaptive second order discrete sliding mode control (DSMC) formulation is presented to mitigate data sampling imprecisions and uncertainties within the modeled plant's dynamics. The adaptation mechanism is derived based on a Lyapunov stability argument which guarantees asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system. The proposed controller is designed and tested on a highly nonlinear combustion engine tracking control problem. The simulation test results show that the second order DSMC can improve the tracking performance up to 80% compared to a first order DSMC under sampling and model uncertainties.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, 2017 American Control Conferenc

    Discrete sliding mode control of piezo actuator in nano-scale range

    In this paper Discrete Sliding Mode Control (SMC) of Piezo actuator is demonstrated in order to achieve a very high accuracy in Nano-scale with the desired dynamics. In spite of the fast dynamics of the Piezo actuator the problem of chattering is eliminated with the SMC control structure. The Piezo actuator suffers from hysteresis loop which is the inherent property and it gives rise to the dominant non-linearity in the system. The proposed SMC control structure has been proved to deliver chattering free motion along with the compensation of the non linearity present due to hysteresis in the system. To further enhance the accuracy of the closed loop system and to be invariant to changes in the plant parameters a robust disturbance observer is designed on SMC framework by taking into consideration the lumped nominal plant parameters. Experimental results for closed loop position are presented in order to verify the Nano-scale accuracy
