    RMD-QOSM - The Resource Management in Diffserv QoS model

    This document describes an NSIS QoS Model for networks that use the Resource Management in Diffserv (RMD) concept. RMD is a technique for adding admission control and preemption function to Differentiated Services (Diffserv) networks. The RMD QoS Model allows devices external to the RMD network to signal reservation requests to edge nodes in the RMD network. The RMD Ingress edge nodes classify the incoming flows into traffic classes and signals resource requests for the corresponding traffic class along the data path to the Egress edge nodes for each flow. Egress nodes reconstitute the original requests and continue forwarding them along the data path towards the final destination. In addition, RMD defines notification functions to indicate overload situations within the domain to the edge nodes

    Design, implementation and evaluation of a QoS-aware transport protocol

    In the context of a reconfigurable transport protocol framework, we propose a QoS-aware Transport Protocol (QSTP), specifically designed to operate over QoS-enabled networks with bandwidth guarantee. QSTP combines QoS-aware TFRC congestion control mechanism, which takes into account the network-level bandwidth reservations, with a Selective ACKnowledgment (SACK) mechanism in order to provide a QoS-aware transport service that fill the gap between QoS enabled network services and QoS constraint applications. We have developed a prototype of this protocol in the user-space and conducted a large range of measurements to evaluate this proposal under various network conditions. Our results show that QSTP allows applications to reach their negotiated QoS over bandwidth guaranteed networks, such as DiffServ/AF network, where TCP fails. This protocol appears to be the first reliable protocol especially designed for QoS network architectures with bandwidth guarantee

    GTFRC, a TCP friendly QoS-aware rate control for diffserv assured service

    This study addresses the end-to-end congestion control support over the DiffServ Assured Forwarding (AF) class. The resulting Assured Service (AS) provides a minimum level of throughput guarantee. In this context, this article describes a new end-to-end mechanism for continuous transfer based on TCP-Friendly Rate Control (TFRC). The proposed approach modifies TFRC to take into account the QoS negotiated. This mechanism, named gTFRC, is able to reach the minimum throughput guarantee whatever the flow’s RTT and target rate. Simulation measurements and implementation over a real QoS testbed demonstrate the efficiency of this mechanism either in over-provisioned or exactly-provisioned network. In addition, we show that the gTFRC mechanism can be used in the same DiffServ/AF class with TCP or TFRC flows

    Differentiated Predictive Fair Service for TCP Flows

    The majority of the traffic (bytes) flowing over the Internet today have been attributed to the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). This strong presence of TCP has recently spurred further investigations into its congestion avoidance mechanism and its effect on the performance of short and long data transfers. At the same time, the rising interest in enhancing Internet services while keeping the implementation cost low has led to several service-differentiation proposals. In such service-differentiation architectures, much of the complexity is placed only in access routers, which classify and mark packets from different flows. Core routers can then allocate enough resources to each class of packets so as to satisfy delivery requirements, such as predictable (consistent) and fair service. In this paper, we investigate the interaction among short and long TCP flows, and how TCP service can be improved by employing a low-cost service-differentiation scheme. Through control-theoretic arguments and extensive simulations, we show the utility of isolating TCP flows into two classes based on their lifetime/size, namely one class of short flows and another of long flows. With such class-based isolation, short and long TCP flows have separate service queues at routers. This protects each class of flows from the other as they possess different characteristics, such as burstiness of arrivals/departures and congestion/sending window dynamics. We show the benefits of isolation, in terms of better predictability and fairness, over traditional shared queueing systems with both tail-drop and Random-Early-Drop (RED) packet dropping policies. The proposed class-based isolation of TCP flows has several advantages: (1) the implementation cost is low since it only requires core routers to maintain per-class (rather than per-flow) state; (2) it promises to be an effective traffic engineering tool for improved predictability and fairness for both short and long TCP flows; and (3) stringent delay requirements of short interactive transfers can be met by increasing the amount of resources allocated to the class of short flows.National Science Foundation (CAREER ANI-0096045, MRI EIA-9871022

    Resource allocation and congestion control strategies for networked unmanned systems

    It is generally agreed that communication is a critical technological factor in designing networked unmanned systems (NUS) that consist of a large number of heterogeneous assets/nodes that may be configured in ad-hoc fashion and that incorporate intricate architectures. In order to successfully carry out the NUS missions, communication among assets need to be accomplished efficiently. In contrast with conventional networks, NUSs have specific features that may render communication more complex. The main distinct characteristics of NUS are as follows: (a) heterogeneity of assets in terms of resources, (b) multiple topologies that can be fully-connected, (c) real-time requirements imposed by delivery timeliness of messages under evolving and uncertain environments, (d) unknown and random time-delays that may degrade the closed-loop dynamics performance, (e) bandwidth constraints reflecting differences in assets behavior and dynamics, and (f) protocol limitations for complying with the wireless features of these networks. The NUS system consists of clusters each having three nodes, namely, a sensor, a decision-maker, and an actuator. Inspired by networked control systems (NCS), we introduced a generic framework for NUSs. Using the fluid flow model (FFM), the overall dynamical model of our network cluster is derived as a time-delay dependent system. The following three main issues are investigated in this thesis, bandwidth allocation, an integrated bandwidth allocation and flow rate control, and congestion control. To demonstrate the difficulty of addressing the bandwidth allocation control problem, a standard PID is implemented for our network cluster. It is shown that in presence of feedback loops and time-delays in the network, this controller induces flow oscillations and consequently, in the worst-case scenario, network instability. To address this problem, nonlinear control strategies are proposed instead. These strategies are evaluated subject to presence of unknown delays and measurable/estimated input traffic. For different network configurations, the error dynamics of the entire controlled cluster is derived and sufficient stability conditions are obtained. In addition, our proposed bandwidth allocation control strategy is evaluated when the NUS assets are assumed to be mobile. The bandwidth allocation problem is often studied in an integrated fashion with the flow rate control and the connection admission control (CAC). In fact, due to importance of interaction of various components, design of the entire control system is often more promising than optimization of individual components. In this thesis, several robust integrated bandwidth allocation and flow rate control strategies are proposed. The third issue that is investigated in this thesis is the congestion control for differentiated-services (DiffServ) networks. In our proposed congestion control strategies, the buffer queue length is used as a feedback information to control locally the queue length of each buffer by acting on the bandwidth and simultaneously a feedback signaling notifies the ordinary sources regarding the allowed maximum rate. Using sliding mode generalized variable structure control techniques (SM-GVSC), two congestion control approaches are proposed, namely, the non degenerate and degenerate GVS control approaches. By adopting decentralized end-to-end, semi-decentralized end-to-end, and distributed hop-by-hop control approaches, our proposed congestion control strategies are investigated for a DiffServ loopless mesh network (Internet) and a DiffServ fully-connected NUS. Contrary to the semi-decentralized end-to-end congestion control strategy, in the distributed hop-by-hop congestion control strategy, each output port controller communicates the maximum allowed flow rate only to its immediate upstream node(s) and/or source(s). This approach reduces the required amount of information in the flow control when Compared to other approaches in which the allowed flow rate is sent to all the upstream sources communicating through an output port

    QoS support in satellite and wireless networks : study under the network simulator (NS-2)

    Aquest projecte es basa en l'estudi de l'oferiment de qualitat de servei en xarxes wireless i satel·litals. Per això l'estudi de les tècniques de cross-layer i del IEEE 802.11e ha sigut el punt clau per al desenvolupament teòric d'aquest estudi. Usant el simulador de xarxes network simulator, a la part de simulacions es plantegen tres situacions: l'estudi de la xarxa satel·lital, l'estudi del mètode d'accés HCCA i la interconnexió de la xarxa satel·lital amb la wireless. Encara que aquest últim punt, incomplet en aquest projecte, ha de ser la continuació per a futures investigacions.Este proyecto se basa en el estudio del ofrecimiento de calidad de servicio en redes wireless y satelitales. Por eso el estudio de las técnicas de cross-layer y del IEEE 802.11eha sido el punto clave para el desarrollo teórico de este estudio. Usando el simulador de redes network simulator, en la parte de simulaciones se plantean tres situaciones: el estudio de la red satelital, el estudio del método de acceso HCCA y la interconexión de la red satelital con la wireless. Aunque este último punto, incompleto en este proyecto, tiene que ser la continuación para futuras investigaciones.This project is based on the study of offering quality of service in satellite and wireless networks. For that reason the study of the techniques of cross-layer and the IEEE 802.11e has been the key point for the theoretical development of this study. Using the software network simulator, in the part of simulations three situations consider: the study of the satellite network, the study of the access method HCCA and the interconnection of the satellite network with the wireless.
