    Transistor-Level Synthesis of Pipeline Analog-to-Digital Converters Using a Design-Space Reduction Algorithm

    A novel transistor-level synthesis procedure for pipeline ADCs is presented. This procedure is able to directly map high-level converter specifications onto transistor sizes and biasing conditions. It is based on the combination of behavioral models for performance evaluation, optimization routines to minimize the power and area consumption of the circuit solution, and an algorithm to efficiently constraint the converter design space. This algorithm precludes the cost of lengthy bottom-up verifications and speeds up the synthesis task. The approach is herein demonstrated via the design of a 0.13 μm CMOS 10 bits@60 MS/s pipeline ADC with energy consumption per conversion of only 0.54 pJ@1 MHz, making it one of the most energy-efficient 10-bit video-rate pipeline ADCs reported to date. The computational cost of this design is of only 25 min of CPU time, and includes the evaluation of 13 different pipeline architectures potentially feasible for the targeted specifications. The optimum design derived from the synthesis procedure has been fine tuned to support PVT variations, laid out together with other auxiliary blocks, and fabricated. The experimental results show a power consumption of 23 [email protected] V and an effective resolution of 9.47-bit@1 MHz.     Current-Mode Techniques for the Implementation of Continuous- and Discrete-Time Cellular Neural Networks

    This paper presents a unified, comprehensive approach to the design of continuous-time (CT) and discrete-time (DT) cellular neural networks (CNN) using CMOS current-mode analog techniques. The net input signals are currents instead of voltages as presented in previous approaches, thus avoiding the need for current-to-voltage dedicated interfaces in image processing tasks with photosensor devices. Outputs may be either currents or voltages. Cell design relies on exploitation of current mirror properties for the efficient implementation of both linear and nonlinear analog operators. These cells are simpler and easier to design than those found in previously reported CT and DT-CNN devices. Basic design issues are covered, together with discussions on the influence of nonidealities and advanced circuit design issues as well as design for manufacturability considerations associated with statistical analysis. Three prototypes have been designed for l.6-pm n-well CMOS technologies. One is discrete-time and can be reconfigured via local logic for noise removal, feature extraction (borders and edges), shadow detection, hole filling, and connected component detection (CCD) on a rectangular grid with unity neighborhood radius. The other two prototypes are continuous-time and fixed template: one for CCD and other for noise removal. Experimental results are given illustrating performance of these prototypes

    Accurate Settling-Time Modeling and Design Procedures for Two-Stage Miller-Compensated Amplifiers for Switched-Capacitor Circuits

    We present modeling techniques for accurate estimation of settling errors in switched-capacitor (SC) circuits built with Miller-compensated operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs). One distinctive feature of the proposal is the computation of the impact of signal levels (on both the model parameters and the model structure) as they change during transient evolution. This is achieved by using an event-driven behavioral approach that combines small- and large-signal behavioral descriptions and keeps track of the amplifier state after each clock phase. Also, SC circuits are modeled under closed-loop conditions to guarantee that the results remain close to those obtained by electrical simulation of the actual circuits. Based on these models, which can be regarded as intermediate between the more established small-signal approach and full-fledged simulations, design procedures for dimensioning SC building blocks are presented whose targets are system-level specifications (such as ENOB and SNDR) instead of OTA specifications.     A 0.35 μm CMOS 17-bit@40-kS/s cascade 2-1 ΣΔ modulator with programmable gain and programmable chopper stabilization

    This paper describes a 0.35μm CMOS chopper-stabilized Switched-Capacitor 2-1 cascade ΣDelta; modulator for automotive sensor interfaces. For a better fitting to the characteristics of different sensor outputs, the modulator includes a programmable set of gains (x0.5, x1, x2, and x4) and a programmable set of chopper frequencies (fs/16, fs/8, fs/4 and fs/2). It has also been designed to operate within the restrictive environmental conditions of automotive electronics (-40°C, 175°C). The modulator architecture has been selected after an exhaustive comparison among multiple ΣΔM topologies in terms of resolution, speed and power dissipation. The design of the modulator building blocks is based upon a top-down CAD methodology which combines simulation and statistical optimization at different levels of the modulator hierarchy. The circuit is clocked at 5.12MHz and consumes, all together, 14.7mW from a single 3.3-V supply. Experimental measurements result in 99.77dB of Dynamic Range (DR), which combined with the gain programmability leads to an overall DR of 112dB.     A 13-bit, 2.2-MS/s, 55-mW multibit cascade ΣΔ modulator in CMOS 0.7-μm single-poly technology

    This paper presents a CMOS 0.7-μm ΣΔ modulator IC that achieves 13-bit dynamic range at 2.2 MS/s with an oversampling ratio of 16. It uses fully differential switched-capacitor circuits with a clock frequency of 35.2 MHz, and has a power consumption of 55 mW. Such a low oversampling ratio has been achieved through the combined usage of fourth-order filtering and multibit quantization. To guarantee stable operation for any input signal and/or initial condition, the fourth-order shaping function has been realized using a cascade architecture with three stages; the first stage is a second-order modulator, while the others are first-order modulators - referred to as a 2-1-1mb architecture. The quantizer of the last stage is 3 bits, while the other quantizers are single bit. The modulator architecture and coefficients have been optimized for reduced sensitivity to the errors in the 3-bit quantization process. Specifically, the 3-bit digital-to-analog converter tolerates 2.8% FS nonlinearity without significant degradation of the modulator performance. This makes the use of digital calibration unnecessary, which is a key point for reduced power consumption. We show that, for a given oversampling ratio and in the presence of 0.5% mismatch, the proposed modulator obtains a larger signal-to-noise-plus-distortion ratio than previous multibit cascade architectures. On the other hand, as compared to a 2-1-1single-bit modulator previously designed for a mixed-signal asymmetrical digital subscriber line modem in the same technology, the modulator in this paper obtains one more bit resolution, enhances the operating frequency by a factor of two, and reduces the power consumption by a factor of four.Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología TIC97-0580European Commission ESPRIT 879

    A Compact CMOS Memristor Emulator Circuit and its Applications

    Conceptual memristors have recently gathered wider interest due to their diverse application in non-von Neumann computing, machine learning, neuromorphic computing, and chaotic circuits. We introduce a compact CMOS circuit that emulates idealized memristor characteristics and can bridge the gap between concepts to chip-scale realization by transcending device challenges. The CMOS memristor circuit embodies a two-terminal variable resistor whose resistance is controlled by the voltage applied across its terminals. The memristor 'state' is held in a capacitor that controls the resistor value. This work presents the design and simulation of the memristor emulation circuit, and applies it to a memcomputing application of maze solving using analog parallelism. Furthermore, the memristor emulator circuit can be designed and fabricated using standard commercial CMOS technologies and opens doors to interesting applications in neuromorphic and machine learning circuits.Comment: Submitted to International Symposium of Circuits and Systems (ISCAS) 201
