A Learning-Based Guidance Selection Mechanism for a Formally Verified Sense and Avoid Algorithm
This paper describes a learning-based strategy for selecting conflict avoidance maneuvers for autonomous unmanned aircraft systems. The selected maneuvers are provided by a formally verified algorithm and they are guaranteed to solve any impending conflict under general assumptions about aircraft dynamics. The decision-making logic that selects the appropriate maneuvers is encoded in a stochastic policy encapsulated as a neural network. The networks parameters are optimized to maximize a reward function. The reward function penalizes loss of separation with other aircraft while rewarding resolutions that result in minimum excursions from the nominal flight plan. This paper provides a description of the technique and presents preliminary simulation results
Motion Planning for Unlabeled Discs with Optimality Guarantees
We study the problem of path planning for unlabeled (indistinguishable)
unit-disc robots in a planar environment cluttered with polygonal obstacles. We
introduce an algorithm which minimizes the total path length, i.e., the sum of
lengths of the individual paths. Our algorithm is guaranteed to find a solution
if one exists, or report that none exists otherwise. It runs in time
, where is the number of robots and is the total
complexity of the workspace. Moreover, the total length of the returned
solution is at most , where OPT is the optimal solution cost. To
the best of our knowledge this is the first algorithm for the problem that has
such guarantees. The algorithm has been implemented in an exact manner and we
present experimental results that attest to its efficiency
Comparison study on AIS data of ship traffic behavior
AIS (Automatic Identification System) data provides valuable input parameters in ship traffic simulation models for maritime risk analysis and the prevention of shipping accidents. This article reports on the detailed comparisons of AIS data analysis between a Dutch case and a Chinese case. This analys is focuses
on restricted waterways to support inland waterway simulations, comparing the differences between a narrow waterway in the Netherlands (the Port of Rotterdam) and a wide one in China (wide water way of Yangtze River close to the SuTong Bridge). It is shown that straightforward statistical distributions can be used to characterise lateral position, speed, heading and interval times for different types and sizes of ships. However, the distributions for different characteristics of ship behaviours differ significantly
Multi-Agent Orbit Design For Perception Enhancement Purpose
This paper develops a robust optimization based method to design orbits on
which the sensory perception of the desired physical quantities are maximized.
It also demonstrates how to incorporate various constraints imposed by many
spacecraft missions such as collision avoidance, co-orbital configuration,
altitude and frozen orbit constraints along with Sun-Synchronous orbit. The
paper specifically investigates designing orbits for constrained visual sensor
planning applications as the case study. For this purpose, the key elements to
form an image in such vision systems are considered and effective factors are
taken into account to define a metric for perception quality. The simulation
results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method for several scenarios
on low and medium Earth orbits as well as a challenging Space-Based Space

This paper reports on the third Early Aspects: Aspect-Oriented Requirements Engineering and Architecture Design Workshop, which has been held in Lancaster, UK, on March 21, 2004.
