    Persuasive Health:Back to the Future

    With individual behaviour and lifestyle determining 30-50% of people’s health, research and supportive technology for affecting behaviour alteration remain urgently needed. Most existing persuasive systems are designed to persuade a user to change a finite set of behaviours to achieve a specific goal. However, if the user’s situation or goal changes, such systems cannot adapt to the changes. A much more robust type of persuasive systems is needed today to enable adequate health navigation and to empower people to face and change their own realities in terms of a large variety of health behaviours and lifestyles. In this paper, we provide a perspective on the impressive body of work contributed over the past 15 years, to better look into the future of persuasive health and to the opportunities a broader theoretical framework and practical methodologies may bring about. We present a taxonomy that attempts to explain the contributions in this field including health behaviour theory, cybernetic action behaviour models, social cognitive theory, and control theory. We identify potentially promising approaches to advance persuasive health’s efficacy in empowering individuals to improve their own health outcomes

    Design Strategy for Integrated Personal Health Records: Improving the User Experience of Digital Healthcare and Wellbeing

    This dissertation addresses the timely problem of designing Integrated Personal Health Records (PHR). The goal is to provide citizens with digital user experiences, sustainable and flexible enough, for gaining control over their personal health information in a seamless way. Most importantly, so that people are able to reflect and act upon their selfknowledge, towards the accomplishment of their good health and wellbeing. Towards this end, the Integrated PHR as an emerging model in the field of Health IT, was the framework that set this research forward on exploring how communication and collaboration between patients and providers can be improved, which naturally impacts the field of HCI. Acknowledging that today patients are the ones who own all that is recorded about their health data, this new model was object of a design strategy that shaped the results presented in this dissertation. These have showed how patients can have more control of their health over time, through a patient-centered, organic system, which has the ability of combining multiple sources of data both from patient and provider side. As this new type of PHR fosters the creation of integrated networks, this milestone was achieved in this research by interacting with cross-channel user experiences that took part of nationwide healthcare ecosystems. The work presented herein, has demonstrated through the analysis and development of two use cases in cooperation with organizations connected to the Portuguese Ministry of Health, how an Integrated PHR can be a powerful personal tool, to be used by the citizen with undeniable value to the demands of an aging society. The use cases structured the thesis into two parts. The first part in collaboration with the Portuguese National Patient Portal, combines an Integrated PHR and incorporates the Portuguese Data Sharing Platform (PDS), which can be used by any Portuguese citizen. This use case study led to a proposal of the portal by also creating a foundational model for designing Integrated PHRs. The second part in collaboration with the Portuguese National Senior Telehealth Program (SaĂșde 24 SĂ©nior), led to another proposal for an Integrated PHR, applying the outcomes from Part 1 and the requirements that derived from the findings explored in this second use case study. The proposed solution, has the potential to be used by the Portuguese senior community in the scope of home assistive care. Both proposals applied a user experience design methodology and included the development of two prototypes. The engagement of the stakeholders during the two case studies was accomplished with participatory design methods and followed a multidisciplinary approach to create solutions that would meet the human, politics and behavior interdependencies that were inherent to the process of working with large healthcare organizations. The provided contributions from this thesis intent to be part of a transition process that is changing the behavior of the healthcare sector, which is increasingly moving towards the improvement of the patient-provider relationship, patient engagement, collaborative care and positive computing, where digital technologies play a key role

    Towards a Wellbeing-driven System Design for Intergenerational Collaborative Innovation: A Literature Review

    Researchers have previously utilized the advantages of a design driven by well-being and intergenerational collaboration (IGC) for successful innovation. Unfortunately, scant information exists regarding barrier dimensions and correlated design solutions in the information systems (IS) domain, which can serve as a starting point for a design oriented toward well-being in an IGC system. Therefore, in this study, we applied the positive computing approach to guide our analysis in a systematic literature review and developed a framework oriented toward well-being for a system with a multi-generational team. Our study contributes to the IS community by providing five dimensions of barriers to IGC and the corresponding well-being determinants for positive system design. In addition, we propose further research directions to close the research gap based on the review outcomes

    Managing chronic conditions can be challenging. People in such conditions, and the people around them, have to, for example: deal with symptoms, adapt to the resulting disability, manage emotions, and change habits to keep the condition under control. Self-care technologies have the potential to support self-care, however they often disregard the complexity of the settings in which they are used and fail to become integrated in everyday life.The present collection of papers forms the Proceedings of the Workshop “Designing Selfcare for Everyday Life” conducted last October 27th, 2014 in Helsinki, where 14 participants from 7 different countries spent the day discussing how to design self-care technologies that are in harmony with people’s everyday life. During the morning, discussions were driven by poster presentations focused on the participants’ work. In the afternoon, we engaged in aparticipatory design exercise focused on the self-care of Parkinson’s disease. Our discussions were driven by the experience of two people living with Parkinson’s that participated in our workshop. At the end of the exercise, each group presented the different insights, concepts and problems that each patient experiences in their everyday life with the disease. Last, we all engaged in a broader discussion with a mapping exercise of issues and challenges in relation to self-care.The contributions featured in the proceedings have been peer-reviewed by the members of the Workshop Program Committee and selected on the basis of their quality, alignment with the workshop theme, and the extent (and diversity) of their backgrounds in design. They express points of view of researchers from both Academia and Industry and provide relevant insights in the design and development use of technologies for self-care.We want to thank all the participants and co-authors for contributing to the Workshop. We are particularly grateful to the two patients, members of the Finnish Parkinson’s Association, who accepted to participate in the workshop and enabled researchers to get aperspective on the challenges of their lives.     Essays on Digital Healthcare and Inclusion

    This dissertation consists of two main parts in seven essays: Five essays revolve around digital healthcare, while two additional essays cover teachers’ attitude towards inclusion. The first three essays are about the use of telehealth software in chronic disease treatment, using the case of hemophilia. Essays IV and V discuss the development of a 3D-software prototype to provide medical models to novice surgeons or other practitioners. The last two essays present a study on what impacts a teacher’s attitude towards inclusion in vocational education. Essay I develops the model and hypotheses which are used in essay II. It combines and adopts several existing models to cover factors that could influence a physician’s decision to recommend a telehealth app to a patient. Essay II builds on this work and tests the model with survey data. The results show that physicians are more likely to recommend a software if they use the software themselves and if they perceive the software to improve their workplace processes. Essay III turns the perspective of the first two essays and investigates which factors influence a patient to use a telehealth app. This was researched by creating a model based on a combination of existing models that describe the behavior of software users and models of patient behavior. Its results indicate that hedonic motivation has an influence, meaning that healthcare apps still need to provide some level of engagement. The other significant influence was cues to action from the social environment, which includes physicians. This additionally validates the necessity of the study undertaken in the first two essays, where the reasoning for a physician to give such an advice was analyzed. Essay IV and V show the development of a hardware/software prototype to solve current shortcomings in the field of surgical-adjacent medicine, like soft-tissue fillers. Facial treatments, even for aesthetic purposes, often involve unnecessary patient risk due to treatment by unexperienced practitioners and/or a lack of standardized procedures. The developed prototype focuses on affordability and helps in treatment planning and professional self-development. Essay IV focuses on the architecture of the prototype itself, while essay V adds an exemplary embedding into a treatment process and a test in a live treatment. Essays VI and VII investigate factors influencing vocational teachers’ attitude towards inclusion. Essay VI is the pilot study. The inclusion-related attitudes of teachers are considered to be essential predictors for their pedagogical and inclusion-related perception and action in inclusive lessons as well as for the teaching success. The results show that previous experiences with inclusion, self-efficacy and the understanding of teaching and learning are the main predictors for a teacher’s personal willingness to act in an inclusive environment

    Foreword: On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Hohenheim, Stuttgart for the 2nd International eHealth Symposium which is themed ?Process of change in organisations through eHealth?. Starting with the inaugural event in 2009, which took place in Turku, Finland, we want to implement a tradition of international eHealth symposia. The presentations and associated papers in this proceedings give a current and representative outline of technical options, application potentials, usability, acceptance and potential for optimization in health care by ICT. We are pleased to present a high-quality program. This year we convey a unique opportunity for academic researchers and industry practitioners to report their state-of-the-art research findings in the domain of eHealth. The symposium aims to foster the international community by gathering experts from various countries such as Australia, Great Britain, Finland and Germany. A first step is done by this symposium which considers this interaction and delivers an insight into current advances made and open research questions. The organizers would like to take the opportunity to thank all the people which made the Symposium possible. We are pleased if both attendance to the 2nd International eHealth Symposium 2010 and reading of this proceedings give you answers to urging questions, a basis for critical discussions, references on interesting tasks and stimulations for new approaches
