Since Internet of Things (IoT) has been widely used in our daily life nowadays, it is regarded as a promising and popular application of the Internet, and has attracted more and more attention. However, IoT is also suffered by some security problems which seriously affect the implementation of IoT system. Similar to traditional software, IoT software is always threated by many vulnerabilities, thus how to evaluate the security situation of IoT software chain becomes a basic requirement. In this paper, A framework of security situation awareness for IoT software chain is proposed, which mainly includes two processes: IoT security situation classification based on support vector machine and security situation awareness based on Markov game model. The proposed method firstly constructs a classification model using support vector machine (IoT) to automatically evaluates the security situation of IoT software chain. Based on the situation classification, we further proposed to adopt Markov model to simulate and predict the next behaviors of participants that involved in IoT system. Additionally, we have designed and developed a security situation awareness system for IoT software chain, the developed system supports the detection of typical IoT vulnerabilities and inherits more than 20 vulnerability detection methods, which shows great potential in IoT system protection

Condition monitoring: Situational awareness brought to you by IoT

Increased technology, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), does not increase situation awareness itself. However, technology will help reduce the impact of the situational awareness barriers and improve decision making when used as it was intended [1]. We can become mesmerized by technology that can be held in our hands to communicate, learn, and entertain to the point of distraction, and miss altogether the context that the medium is trying to convey. With this in mind, and from my experience, comes real life observations of good intentions gone wrong at various stages of IoT. This is not an exhaustive list, but more commonly offering situations of doing before thinking

The Internet of Things (IoT) is growing fast. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), more than 28 billion things will be connected to the Internet by 2020—from smartwatches and other wearables to smart cities, smart homes, and smart cars. This O’Reilly report dives into the IoT industry through a series of illuminating talks and case studies presented at 2015 Strata + Hadoop World Conferences in San Jose, New York, and Singapore. Among the topics in this report, you’ll explore the use of sensors to generate predictions, using data to create predictive maintenance applications, and modeling the smart and connected city of the future with Kafka and Spark. Case studies include: Using Spark Streaming for proactive maintenance and accident prevention in railway equipment Monitoring subway and expressway traffic in Singapore using telco data Managing emergency vehicles through situation awareness of traffic and weather in the smart city pilot in Oulu, Finland Capturing and routing device-based health data to reduce cardiovascular disease Using data analytics to reduce human space flight risk in NASA’s Orion program This report concludes with a discussion of ethics related to algorithms that control things in the IoT. You’ll explore decisions related to IoT data, as well as opportunities to influence the moral implications involved in using the IoT

How the Internet of Things Technology Enhances Emergency Response Operations

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a novel paradigmthat connects the pervasive presence around us of a variety of things or objects to the Internet by using wireless/wired technologies to reach desired goals. Since the concept of the IoT was introduced in 2005, we see the deployment of a new generation of networked smart objects with communication, sensory and action capabilities for numerous applications, mainly in global supply chain management, environment monitoring and other non-stress environments. This paper introduces the IoT technology for use in the emergency management community. Considering the information required for supporting three sequential and distinct rhythms in emergency response operations: mobilization rhythm, preliminary situation assessment rhythm, and intervention rhythm, the paper proposes a modified task-technology fit approach that is used to investigate how the IoT technology can be incorporated into the three rhythms and enhance emergency response operations. The findings from our research support our two hypotheses: H1: IoT technology fits the identified information requirements; and H2: IoT technology provides added value to emergency response operations in terms of obtaining efficient cooperation, accurate situational awareness, and complete visibility of resources

Theimportanceofsystem-levelcontext-andsituationaware- ness increases with the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT). This paper proposes an integrated approach to situation awareness by providing a semantically rich situation model together with reliable situation infer- ence based on Context Spaces Theory (CST) and Situation Theory (ST). The paper discusses benefits of integrating the proposed situation aware- ness framework with knowledge base and efficient reasoning techniques taking into account uncertainty and incomplete knowledge about situa- tions. The paper discusses advantages and impact of proposed context adaptation in dynamic IoT environments. Practical issues of two-way mapping between IoT messaging standards and CST are also discussed

MARGOT: Dynamic IoT Resource Discovery for HADR Environments

Smart City services leverage sophisticated IT architectures whose assets are deployed in dynamic and heterogeneous computing and communication scenarios. Those services are particularly interesting for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations in urban environments, which could improve Situation Awareness by exploiting the Smart City IT infrastructure. To this end, an enabling requirement is the discovery of the available Internet-of-Things (IoT) resources, including sensors, actuators, services, and computing resources, based on a variety of criteria, such as geographical location, proximity, type of device, type of capability, coverage, resource availability, and communication topology / quality of network links. To date, no single standard has emerged that has been widely adopted to solve the discovery challenge. Instead, a variety of different standards have been proposed and cities have either adopted one that is convenient or reinvented a new standard just for themselves. Therefore, enabling discovery across different standards and administrative domains is a fundamental requirement to enable HADR operations in Smart Cities. To address these challenges, we developed MARGOT (Multi-domain Asynchronous Gateway Of Things), a comprehensive solution for resource discovery in Smart City environments that implements a distributed and federated architecture and supports a wide range of discovery protocols
